The Reason Your Feet
May be Aching Today
In the 1950s factory managers began referring to the day after Thanksgiving as "Black Friday" because so many workers called in sick. That day, one magazine noted, was "a disease second only to the bubonic plague" in its effects on employees.
In the 1960s Philadelphia policemen used the term to describe the throng of jaywalking shoppers and traffic that poured into the city center making their jobs more difficult. By the mid 1970s, newspapers in and around Philadelphia used it to refer to the start of holiday shopping in a negative way.
In the 1980s some savvy merchants began pointing out all the "black ink" that showed up on balance sheets as a result of that day. From there came the realization that "Black Friday" was the day many of them came out of the red and went into the black by beginning to turn a profit.
Since then "Black Friday" has become an unofficial holiday. Now we even see "Black Thursday" sales, and retailers opening on Thanksgiving Day. Who knows, one day Thanksgiving might disappear altogether, or the month of November will be called "Black November."
