Putting Knowledge Into Practice As a life-long learner I enjoy investing my time reading, networking and discovering innovative ideas to share with our teams. Last weekend I had an opportunity to go to St. Louis to participate with a group of about sixty entrepreneurs who gather two or three times a year. We discussed issues such as strategic planning, value based customer service, building culture, great ways to bring the millennial generation onto your team, and of course ways to retain great employees, such as: - Building your culture around the fact that people are the strongest asset we have at all times.
- Our people need to share a unified philosophy.
- A+ employees want to develop personally. They want to be appreciated for the contribution they give, and some may even desire to leave a legacy.
- The number one reason people leave your company or organization is micromanagers/bad leaders.
For most of us, these bullet points are not unfamiliar. But, are they a non-negotiable part of your culture? |

Things that make you go hmmm...
Sometimes Being Overextended
Is a Good Thing
There is a lot of fear associated with being 'overextended'. Take too much financial risk, or expose yourself to the vagaries of the market and you'll end up stressed, bankrupt and overextended.
In commodity businesses it is true that productivity only increases with more effort. Left unchecked people could be pushed to the point of exhaustion, all in the name of enhanced productivity.
The exception seems to be creative work. In fact, the exhaustion from overextending yourself creatively is some of the best exhaustion you will ever feel. An organization that provides a platform for people to push into their fear will produce both better work and a better workforce.
We need to figure out ways to push ourselves until we're creatively overextended.
