Twenty Boy Scouts (along with their parents and Troop Leaders) sang carols for Osprey Lodge residents over the holidays. How do you like your marshmallow cooked? |
Music and Memory
(Excerpt from the Alzheimer's Reading Room)
The way the brain processes music is a global process. While the parts of the brain where we make memories are the first parts to be ravaged as Alzheimer's develops, music pulls from the cortical and sub-cortical areas, which are not as damaged by the disease.
As a result, neuroscientists believe that music may allow patients to code information using much more of the brain. Or it may be that music stimulates people and helps them pay more attention, he says, adding that even with healthy older adults, lack of focus plays a role in memory impairment.
Whatever the mechanism, the therapeutic value of music is accepted by the medical establishment, and some forms of music therapy are covered by health insurance.

Things that make you go hmmm...
Words to Ponder
Working with people is the biggest dare we have in life. No one tells us how to do this. School didn't teach it to us, yet it's one of the most valuable things to have.
The "balance" of working with people is never learned; it's practiced just like medicine or law.
