You may know that exercise can improve your brain health and protect it as you age. And you may know that staying mentally active - doing crossword puzzles, reading, playing games - also helps your memory stay strong in your later years.
But it turns out that using your computer is another effective way of protecting against age-related memory loss. That is, if you also get some exercise.
According to a study in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings, moderate exercise and regular computer use helps people over 70 retain brain function. Of study participants who did not exercise or use the computer, 37 percent showed signs of mild cognitive impairment, which is the stage before Alzheimer's disease. Of those who did exercise and were computer users, only 18 percent showed signs of cognitive impairment.
It's important to note that neither exercise nor computer use alone, without the benefit of the other habit, showed the same significant results. So log on; then get moving.
Exercise considered in the study included:
*Aerobics *Brisk walking
*Golfing (no cart) *Hiking
*Martial Arts *Strength training with weights
*Swimming *Tennis
*Using exercise machines *Yoga
