I am pleased to announce that 65 students have been selected to receive the 2015 St. Petersburg College Presidential Scholarship.

The program recognizes the academic achievement of some of the county's best and brightest high school seniors.  Recipients receive scholarships for up to 60 credit hours of study at SPC, valued at over $455,000 this year.  Additionally, students are invited to join the President's Scholars Counsel to gain an insider's look at college operations as well as an opportunity to share their perspective on student affairs.

Area students who have a minimum 3.5 GPA and who attend public, private or parochial schools, or who are home schooled, are eligible to apply for the scholarship.  This year's recipients had an average weighted 4.29 GPA, an average SAT Reading/Math score of 1120 and an average ACT score of 25.

Our congratulations to all graduating seniors!

Sincerely,
Frances Neu

SPC Alum Rank Fifth Nationally in Job Skills

In a recent ranking of two year colleges, St. Petersburg College alumni rank fifth in the nation and first in the state of Florida for possessing valuable job skills, according to a report released by the Brookings Institution, an independent, nonprofit think tank headquartered in Washington, D.C.

The study, entitled "Beyond College Rankings, a Value Added Approach to Assessing Two and Four Year Schools," used data from multiple government and private sources, including the Census Bureau, the U.S. Department of Education, LinkedIn and Burning Glass,  a
labor market intelligence firm. The study explored the median mid-career salary, earning potential, and student loan repayment rates. Read the full report here: Brookings Report

"We work closely with our business partners to align our programs with workforce needs so our graduates are prepared to compete for high wage jobs," said College President Bill Law. "Our number one goal is helping to improve students' lives, and increasing earning power is a surefire way to do that."

The Brookings report is the first to provide "value-added" measures. By using non-traditional tools and analyzing data on economic outcomes for graduates, the report moves beyond other college rankings by focusing on how well colleges contribute to student economic success.

The SPC Foundation will launch its new speaker series on November 2 with Steve Wozniak. The evening will include a private VIP reception followed by the program featuring the Apple co-founder. Ticket information will be announced later this summer.
JWB Partnership Supports Early Childcare Training

JWB Executive Director Dr. Marcie Biddleman, SPC President Bill Law; Juvenile Welfare Board Chair Maria Edmonds; SPC Board of Trustees Chairman Bob Fine.

A new partnership with the Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinellas County will provide scholarships to early childhood professionals in an effort to help better prepare young learners. Through SPC's College of Education, local child care workers can earn certificates that specialize in Infants and Toddlers or Preschool.

JWB has committed $54,000 to fund 30 scholarships that will be available to individuals working 20 hours or more per week in licensed early childhood care centers or family care homes (as identified by JWB) in Pinellas County.
SPC Foundation Board Welcomes New Member

The SPC Foundation Board of Directors elected Mike Carroll to the Board at its May meeting.

A native of St. Petersburg, Carroll attended SPC before graduating from the University of Florida. Carroll began his career in Dallas, TX, and has served as the Chief Financial Officer for six companies including Club Corporation of America and the St. Petersburg Times.

Carroll's community involvement includes the boards of the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce, the American Victory Ship, and various professional organizations.  In 2001, he founded a not-for-profit organization to rescue the St. Petersburg Tennis Center at Bartlett Park from closure.  During his 14 years as president, the tennis center has raised over $2.4M, completely rebuilt facilities, increased attendance 8-fold, and organized the nationally recognized Courier's Kids program of free tennis instruction for children of the nearby neighborhoods.

SPC Alumni Heads to the Yankees

Trey Amburgey #15, SPC Titans Outfielder
Outfielder Trey Amburgey has been drafted out of St. Petersburg College by the New York Yankees. He was selected as a 13th round draft pick during the 2015 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Trey became the 66th player to be drafted out of St. Petersburg College in the last 24 years.

"Trey is an example of what hard work can get you. While at SPC, he learned structure, routine, and commitment to the process. His talent was there all along at SPC and he learned how to get the most out of it. The coaching staff and I are very proud for his accomplishment and we wish him the best of luck." said Coach Ryan Beckman.
Science Center at Bay Pines Prepares to Break Ground

Construction on the SPC Science Center at Bay Pines is scheduled to begin this summer. The Center will provide undergraduate students research opportunities in all STEM-related fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) as well as professional development for faculty and an engaging resource for the community to interact with and participate in science.

"This will be a completely new environment for studying environmental and marine science," said John Chapin, Dean of Natural Science at SPC. "The Center is designed to raise enthusiasm about the natural world and further studies in science for SPC students as well as elementary, middle and high school students and life-long learners."

The proposed 11,000 sq. ft. facility is scheduled to open next year.
"The benefits of the endeavor will extend beyond traditional learning institutions to serve the broader community as a key resource for education, research and outreach" said Frances Neu, Executive Director of SPC Foundation.
Provost Karen Kaufman-White Retires

Dr. Karen Kaufman-White
SPC St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus Provost Dr. Karen Kaufman-White retired in June after 31 years of service at the college.
