Innovation Grants: Promoting Student Success
|

Beth Horner presents a check to SPC Foundation Chairman Ken Cherven to support the Innovation Grants Initiative. Wells Fargo is one of
several sponsors of the program.
| Thanks to the generous support of corporate and individual sponsors, the Foundation is increasing funding for its Innovation Grants Initiative for the second straight year. The program provides financial resources of up to $3,500 to faculty and staff to implement programs that broaden the scope of the curriculum, deepen the college experience and improve student achievement. This year the Foundation will award close to $75,000, up from $50,000 last year. Along with the growth in funding, the number of awards will increase this year as well. |
"We are pleased to be able to fund 24 grants this year that represent a broad cross-section of disciplines across the college's campuses," said Foundation Innovations Grants Committee Chair Steven Shepard. Transamerica Sponsors Keys to Manhood
|

Jimmie Lee Solomon
|
Believe in the possibilities and be bold enough to take a chance. That was the advice Jimmie Lee Solomon shared with over 160 male college and high school students attending the Keys to Manhood conference on January 31. "I was lucky to have a grandfather that told me that I could go to college," he said. "Everybody told me I couldn't. But one person said 'you can' and that was all I needed to hear."
Solomon, who went on to graduate from Dartmouth College and Harvard Law School and spent a distinguished career as a top executive in Major League Baseball, was the keynote speaker at the second annual Keys To Manhood conference. The event is part of the college's continuing efforts to prepare all students for success in school and in life. "It's like playing golf," Solomon said. "You can't wait for the perfect conditions. Take the shot. You've got to make a decision to step forward and do it, no matter what you're burdens are," he said.
Transamerica provided the funding to launch the Keys to Manhood conference two years ago and sponsored the event again this year.

Nancy and Joe Blanton Build a Legacy
|

Joe and Nancy Blanton
|
In 1997, Nancy and Joe Blanton established the Amy R. Blanton scholarship at the SPC Foundation in honor of their daughter. The scholarship provides financial assistance to students with learning or physical disabilities. Since its inception, the Amy R. Blanton Scholarship Fund has provided more than $53,600 in support to SPC students.
The Blantons, who have been longtime advocates of quality education, understand the importance of supporting deserving and hardworking students now and in the future.
|
To this end, both Nancy and Joe have established individual bequests that designate a portion of their estate to fund the Amy R. Blanton scholarship beyond their lifetimes. The combined bequests of $150,000 will ensure their scholarship will support students with disabilities in the years to come.
Joe is Vice President of Investments at Mustard Seed Advisors of Raymond James. He serves as Chair of the Foundation's Finance & Investment Committee and is the immediate past chair of the Foundation Board of Directors.
