LRMA Receives Accreditation

Thunderous cheers and a standing ovation greeted Leepa Rattner Museum of Art Director, Ann Larsen, as she announced the museum's recent accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM).  Ms. Larsen reported that only around six percent of museums nationwide have attained this status, putting LRMA an elite class with the likes of the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. and the Metropolitan in New York.

The announcement was made during the opening reception for the Clyde Butcher Preserving Eden exhibit at the Museum.  Butcher, an Ansel Adams award winning photographer, is best known for his large-format, black and white landscapes of Florida's wilderness areas and for his commitment to saving Florida's fragile environments. Documentary filmmaker, Ken Burns, has described him as "a national treasure." The exhibit will run through February 16.

AmeriLife Helps Support SPC Veterans and Study Abroad Initiatives

Timothy North, CEO of AmeriLife, presented a $21,530 check to the Foundation to support veteran's services and study abroad scholarships. Mr. North seeded the project with $7,000 for Study Abroad then initiated an internal employee campaign called College Colors: Cheering for Veterans, whereby Amerilife matched employee contributions dollar-for-dollar.

SPC's Director of Veteran Services, Jeff Cavanagh, said over $14,000 of AmeriLife's gift will support the Veteran's Bridge Fund, a reservoir to assist veterans in meeting unanticipated financial responsibilities.

"We are deeply grateful for Mr. North's leadership and the involvement of AmeriLife," said Frances Neu, VP/Executive Director of the St. Petersburg College Foundation. "This support will help ease the financial challenges too many of our veterans encounter as they pursue a college credential."

Lothar Uhl Donates Winslow Homer Art

Lothar Uhl and SPC curator Christine Renc-Carter, curator display one of the donated prints.
Lothar Uhl is a cornerstone in the Tampa Bay cultural community.  From a vast art collection cultivated with his late wife, Mildred, Mr. Uhl has established their legacy through donations of important works to museums, such as the Leepa-Rattner Museum, St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts, and the Dali Museum.

The SPC Foundation's College Collection is pleased to be included among these world-class museums, receiving a generous donation from Mr. Uhl of 391 wood engravings by prominent 19th century American artist, Winslow Homer (1836-1910). Reaching beyond museum walls, the College Collection makes art accessible and engages students through public display, exhibits and programming.

College Collection Curator, Christine Renc-Carter, will utilize this collection of Civil War era prints and magazines as an educational tool to connect with faculty and students by providing cross-disciplinary experiences in American history, political science, art and humanities.

SPC Launches "Live" Listening Post

President Bill Law answered questions for an hour last month during the first "live" online Listening Post. The topics included orientation, financial aid, developmental education and student government.

Some questions were submitted in advance, but many came in via chat during the event. More than 150 people viewed the session live, including those at watch parties at several campuses.

Dr. Law implemented the face-to-face Listening Posts forum in 2010, traveling to campuses to hear directly from students and staff. It was part of an effort by the college to provide more information to students, employees and the public about higher education topics by engaging them in the conversation. It is expected that the live-streamed, online Listening Post will provide more students the opportunity to participate.
