PayNearMe to encourage consumers to visit Health Insurance Marketplace

Every PayNearMe receipt generated at U.S. 7-Eleven locations encourages sign up for
health insurance coverage

To reach more Americans this open enrollment season, Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell announced a first-of-its-kind partnership between HHS and the electronic cash transactions company PayNearMeto reach financially underserved and other cash-preferring consumers.

Secretary Burwell joined PayNearMe and 7-Eleven, Inc. leadership in announcing the partnership at a 7-Eleven store in Washington D.C., where PayNearMe demonstrated how consumers would receive receipts printed with information on Open Enrollment.

"Leveraging developments from technology companies like PayNearMe helps us to reach our consumers where they are, with the information they need to sign up and re-enroll in quality, affordable care through the Health Insurance Marketplace," said Secretary Burwell. "With this partnership, we are using digital platforms to place Open Enrollment information in the hands of consumers who need it."

During this year's Open Enrollment period, all PayNearMe receipts printed at 7,800 7-Eleven stores nationwide will include a special announcement that informs consumers about upcoming Affordable Care Act deadlines and encourages them to explore beneficial options such as tax credits and newly available plans at HealthCare.gov.

Putting these reminders at the bottom of PayNearMe receipts will help get health coverage information into the hands of traditionally hard-to-reach consumers. Because PayNearMe receipts serve as a consumer's proof of payment for important items such as rent, loans and utilities, they are more likely to be inspected and retained than a traditional receipt.

In addition to rent, loans and utilities, PayNearMe also allows cash-preferring consumers to pay with cash for online purchases and more at participating 7-Eleven stores and other retail stores across the U.S. Once a payment is accepted, the business being paid is notified immediately and the consumer receives a receipt as proof of payment.

"Banked or unbanked, cash or plastic - no matter what your preference, everyone can benefit from affordablehealth care," said Danny Shader, PayNearMe's founder and chief executive officer. "By partnering with the Department of Health and Human Services, we can help generate awareness of this open enrollment process among consumers."

About PayNearMe

PayNearMe is the electronic cash transaction network that enables consumers to pay rent and utility bills, repay loans, buy tickets, make online purchases and do much more with cash. According to the FDIC, 28 percent (34 million) of U.S. households are financially underserved[i]. Consumers can conveniently make payments on their own schedule and in their own neighborhood in less than a minute at one of over 17,000 trusted locations including 7-Eleven®, Family Dollar® and ACE Cash Express® stores across the United States.

Agriculture Facts About Christmas Trees

By: Dr. Leonard Perry, Extension Professor
University of Vermont

Knowing a few facts about Christmas trees and their production will give you a new appreciation of them this holiday season, and may help you choose between a real tree and an artificial one.

--Real trees are grown on farms like other crops.  To ensure enough trees for harvest, growers plant one to three seedlings for every tree harvested.  An estimated 40 to 45 million trees are planted in North America.

--Christmas tree farms stabilize soil, protect water supplies, and provide refuge for wildlife.  Often these trees can be grown on poor soils where other crops wont grow.  About a half million acres are used in this country to grow Christmas trees, preserving much green space.

--An acre of Christmas trees produces enough daily oxygen for 18 people.  The trees on farms in this country currently provide enough oxygen for 18 million people a day.

--There are an estimated 446 million trees growing on farms in this country.

--These trees are grown by about 21,000 f
arms in this country, which employ about 100,000 people either full or part time.

--Time to grow a tree (6 to 7 feet) for sale can vary from 4 to 15 years, with the average being 7.

--About 25 to 30 million real trees are sold in this country every year.

--Top selling trees include balsam fir, Fraser fir, and Scotch pine.

--The top tree growing states are Oregon, North Carolina, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Washington.

--While many real trees in the north are locally grown, supporting local agriculture, over 80 percent of artificial trees worldwide are made in China.

--No chemicals and few pesticides (if any) are used on real trees, with studies showing no residues on harvested trees.  Artificial trees are often plastic, and may contain the dangerous chemical PVC.  Manufacture of PVC creates the most toxic man-made chemicals, dioxins.  Artificial trees also may contain metal toxins such as lead.

--Christmas trees in home, both real and artificial, account for less than one-tenth of one percent of all home fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association.  Real trees kept fresh are difficult to ignite.

--Real Christmas trees are recyclable, often chipped into mulch at local recycling centers.  The average family uses an artifical tree for 6 to 9 years before discarding, where it will remain in landfills for centuries as they are not recyclable.

--A study by Swedish researchers found that, considering all the inputs, a real tree is five times more environmentally compatible than an artificial one.

More facts on Christmas trees, including their history and how to care for them, are available from the National Christmas Tree Association ( www.christmastree.org)

Timeless Holiday Health and Safety Tips

The holidays offer a perfect opportunity for enjoying loved ones, celebrating life, being grateful, and reflecting on what's important. They are also a time to appreciate the gift of health. Support health and safety for yourself and others by following these timeless holiday tips.

Wash Your Hands: Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps you can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Wash your hands with soap and clean running water, rubbing them for at least 20 seconds. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don't have tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow, not your hands.

Stay Warm: Cold temperatures can cause serious health problems, especially in infants and older adults. Stay dry, and dress warmly in several layers of loose-fitting, tightly woven clothing.

Manage Stress: The holidays don't need to take a toll on your health and pocketbook. Keep your commitments and spending in check. Balance work, home, and play. Get support from family and friends. Keep a relaxed and positive outlook. Make sure to get proper sleep.

Travel Safely: Whether you're traveling across town or around the world, help ensure your trip is safe. Don't drink and drive, and don't let someone else drink and drive. Wear a seat belt every time you drive or ride in a motor vehicle. Always buckle your child in the car using a child safety seat, booster seat, or seat belt appropriate for his/her height, weight, and age.

Get Checkups: Exams and screenings can help find potential problems early, when the chances for treatment and cure are often better. Vaccinations help prevent diseases and save lives. Schedule a visit with your health care provider for a yearly exam. Ask what vaccinations and tests you should get based on your age, lifestyle, travel plans, medical history, and family health history.

Watch the Kids: Children are at high risk for injuries. Keep a watchful eye on your kids when they're eating and playing. Keep potentially dangerous toys, food, drinks, household items, choking hazards (like coins and hard candy), and other objects out of kids' reach. Learn how to provide early treatment for children who are choking. Make sure toys are used properly. Develop rules about acceptable and safe behaviors, including using electronic media.

Prevent Injuries: Injuries can happen anywhere, and some often occur around the holidays. Use step stools instead of climbing on furniture when hanging decorations. Leave the fireworks to the professionals. Wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or skateboarding to help prevent head injuries. Keep vaccinations up to date.

Prepare Food Safely: As you prepare holiday meals, keep yourself and your family safe from food-related illness. Wash hands and surfaces often. Avoid cross-contamination by keeping raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs (including their juices) away from ready-to-eat foods and eating surfaces. Cook foods to the proper temperature. Refrigerate promptly. Do not leave perishable foods out for more than two hours.

Eat Healthy, Be Happy: With balance and moderation, you can enjoy the holidays the healthy way. Choose fresh fruit as a festive and sweet substitute for candy. Limit fats, salt, and sugary foods. Find fun ways to stay active, such as dancing to your favorite holiday music. Be active for at least 2˝ hours a week. Help kids and teens be active for at least 1 hour a day.
