Greetings!
This is an historic time for those Americans who never had health insurance, who had to go without insurance after losing a job or becoming sick, or who had been turned down because of a pre-existing condition. Because new marketplaces established under the Affordable Care Act, millions of Americans will have new access to affordable health insurance coverage.
A year from now, the marketplace will be very different but much work remains. Everyone in the nation will be required to have health insurance under Obamacare. People will be able to start choosing their options and learning what it will cost in a matter of months.
Find out what is changing and when here.
Again, where does that leave you? Secure with TACT. If you have specific concerns or specific questions, feel free to contact us. YOU are our focus. YOU are our business.

February is National
Cancer Prevention Month
If your New Year's fervor to get healthy is already losing steam, February -- National Cancer Prevention Month - is a great time to give yourself a second chance.
AICR's three Guidelines for Cancer Prevention can help you focus on what's most important.
- Choose mostly plant foods, limit red meat and avoid processed meat.
- Be physically active every day in any way for 30 minutes or more.
- Aim to be a healthy weight throughout life.
Notice anything about them? Like, for example, how closely the advice for cutting cancer risk resembles advice for preventing other chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes - not to mention for getting in shape?
It's true: these simple steps offer many different health benefits, and National Cancer Prevention Month is as good a time as any to start putting them into action.
Let's look at them one at a time:

Every year, the Union for International Cancer Control's (UICC) World Cancer Day aims to bring the growing cancer crisis to the attention of the public, government leaders and health policymakers worldwide.
World Cancer Day was yesterday, February 4th. AICR is helping to raise awareness of World Cancer Day in the US and throughout the world. Click here to see more about the effort.

Healthcare Bills Aim
to Reduce Fraud
Texas lawmakers are looking at ways to cut down on billions in fraud and waste in Medicaid, health funding for the poor, they announced January 20.
The question is whether the proposed laws will discourage medical practitioners from operating or accepting Medicaid as payment, a Texas Tech professor said.
Medicaid fraud and waste cost Texas $6 billion from 2004-11, lawmakers said.
Sen. Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, and chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services, plans to tackle that number with two pieces of legislation aimed at reducing Medicaid fraud and improving Medicaid services based on quality of care.

Gov. Perry's Stance on Medicaid Expansion Draws Angered Response
In last Tuesday's State of the State Address, Governor Rick Perry drew anger from his critics as he stood firm against allowing Texas to expand Medicaid to low-income adults. Medicaid expansion is part of the federal Affordable Care Act but Perry said broadening the program in Texas would drive "millions more into an unsustainable system."
Supporters of Medicaid expansion say it would make healthcare available to millions of uninsured low-income Texans while making Texas eligible for a boost in federal funds if it agreed to the expansion.
Perry's $1.8 billion promise of tax relief was one of the main highlights in his address. Although Perry didn't go into details, the governor's office posted a link on Perry's website that would allow taxpayers to voice their preferences on a number of options, including lower property taxes, expanding the state's sales tax holiday and increasing the property tax exemption. The selections also included options for businesses, including lowering the business tax rate.

The Latest in Ag Issues
Grain in the News:
The Texas Department of Agriculture announced earlier this month that Texas grain producers have voted against the establishment of a producer assessment to self-insure against financial risks associated with selling/storing grain. TDA certified all the ballots and the final results were 507 for and 1,171 against.
A total of 1,678 valid ballots were certified by TDA and Texas Secretary of State officials based on the United States Department of Agriculture's records of certified grain producers. By law, the proposal had to receive at least two-thirds of the total votes to pass.
The referendum was important for grain producers to have the opportunity to decide, through an impartial, electoral process, whether the risk of financial loss from placing grain on storage deposit with a grain warehouse is significant enough to create an insurance indemnity program.

Water in the News:
For many Texans, water isn't much of a problem. Or at least they don't think it is.
That was part of a conclusion that University of Texas faculty made after examining public opinion polls of the problems that matter to Texans. They wrote in a January article for the Texas Tribune that less than 4 percent of respondents have thought of water as a top problem.

Souper Bowl Healthy!
While the Ravens and 49ers battled it out on Super Bowl Sunday, was your entertainment plate piled high and healthy?
Eating a healthful soup before eating an entrée was found by researchers to curb the appetites of study subject so they didn't consume so many calories in the rest of the meal. What's more, our tomato soup is filled with vitamin C, an antioxidant that helps to keep your cells healthy and protect against cancer and the chills of winter.
Tomatoes' red color comes from the cancer-fighting phytochemical lycopene; tomatoes also contain beta-carotene and lutein, plus potassium and 1.5 grams of fiber. This soup adds even more potent phytochemicals from the onions' and scallions' allium compounds and from the fragrant basil.
Make a big pot of it for your friends or family and stay well while the teams duke it out on the field.
