Intergenerational Roundtable on War

Local High School Students Discuss War with Gurwin's WWII Veterans

Twenty-four students from four high schools participated in a roundtable with residents who are veterans of World War II to learn about their war experiences and to discuss war in general. The students from Bay Shore High School, Cold Spring Harbor High School, Commack High School, and Half Hollow Hills High School West were broken into small groups and each group interviewed a veteran. They then shared the stories with the entire group and later had a question and answer session.

The veterans shared fascinating stories. One was on one of the ships that transported the atomic bomb; another was in Hawaii implementing marshall law after the US was attacked at Pearl Harbor; and another was in Okinawa at the time the atom bombs were dropped. They also provided their views about war and gave advice to the students. The students and their teachers found it to be an invaluable learning experience.

Students from the Cold Spring Harbor High School Leadership Class wrote to our residents, telling them how delighted they were to spend the morning here, leaving with a greater understanding of what life was like for these veterans who served their country so unselfishly. "Our trip to Gurwin's assisted living community was an eye-opener to the intriguing and interesting stories of some of the World War II Veterans," they wrote. "The conversations gave us advice from each man's life experience. They taught us to enjoy the type of work we're doing, and to always smile and stay positive. We learned their exciting war stories like transportation of atom bombs and facing death in person. Their travel experiences really opened up our landscape of history and how it has impacted the world today. We really appreciate these great men sharing their stories and details of what life was like during World War II. We thank them for their sacrifice and service."

This roundtable is part of a series which will partner residents and high school students two additional times over the school year, to discuss topics including The Great Depression, Immigration and the Holocaust.

Introducing Elizabeth Vladimir

Walking into Elizabeth Vladimir's apartment is like walking into a fashionable art gallery.  Upon closer inspection, you find that the dynamic and diverse paintings are all by the same artist - Elizabeth!

Manhattan born and raised, Elizabeth attended Hunter College, where she studied fine art.  At that time, her boyfriend found her to be an exceptional beauty, so he submitted her photo to a local pageant.  Elizabeth went on to win several beauty contests before finally becoming a finalist in the Miss New York pageant!

But Elizabeth's true love was art.  She continued her studies, earning her Masters Degree and then going on to teach art for three decades before retiring at age 55.  While a teacher, she frequented art galleries and purchased many original works.    At one gallery in particular, she picked up what she believed was an original Leroy Neiman, and to verify its authenticity she managed to contact Neiman to see if he would take a look at the painting.  She was given permission to come to his Manhattan studio and learned that it was, in fact, the real thing.

Elizabeth and Neiman formed a friendship that afforded her the opportunity to bring her elementary school art classes to his studio each year to meet the artist.  At each visit, he would select one student to draw.  One year, she let him know ahead of time that the little boy wearing a certain striped shirt was her son Peter, suggesting that "perhaps" he could select him.  Of course, he did, and that painting hung in her den until the day she moved into Gurwin Assisted Living just over a year ago.  Peter is now the rightful owner of this original Leroy Neiman!

Elizabeth always welcomes visitors to view her paintings, so stop by when you get a chance.  You'll be rewarded with a stunning art display!
