Foreign Language Area Studies Deadline is February 6

 

The European Studies FLAS Fellowship is awarded to undergraduate and graduate students from UT through funding from the Department of Education's Title VI grant. Students may apply for either an Academic Year (AY) or Summer Fellowship. Academic Year applicants should be UT students who are studying an approved modern European language and are enrolled in at least one course with a significant European Studies component per semester. Summer Awards applicants should plan to study an approved European language through an intensive program at UT, another US institution, or in some cases a European institution. Multiple Fellowships will be awarded.

Euro Challenge Competition Open

 

As one of the newest European Union Centers of Excellence in the United States, the Center for European Studies is participating for the first time in the Euro Challenge, a national competition for 9th and 10th grade students examining the European Union, its economy, and its currency. The competition is hosted by the Delegation of the European Union to the United States and UT's European Union Center of Excellence housed in the Center for European Studies. The regional competition will be held on Saturday, March 24th at the ACES Building on the UT campus and is open to the public.

Texas International Law Journal to Co-host Symposium on Euro Crisis with CES

 

 On February 9th and 10th the Texas International Law Journal (TILJ) and the Center for European Studies will co-sponsor  the 2012 TILJ Symposium, which will focus on the present economic crisis in the Eurozone. Professor Gerard Hertig of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich will deliver the keynote address. Speakers from across the Eurozone will participate in three different panels focusing on Financial Markets, Legal Responses, and EU Constitutional Law and their relation to the Crisis.

Competition Open for Faculty Awards for Business

 

The Center for European Studies is pleased to offer two faculty research grants with funding from the EU Center of Excellence (EUCE) in the College of Liberal Arts and the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) at the McCombs School of Business. The Business Studies Stipends of $4,000 each will be awarded to faculty members who research business in the EU or business relations between the EU and US, or to support collaborative research between researchers at UT and their colleagues in the EU on those topics.

 

The deadline for applications is March 1st.

Center Welcomes Visiting Scholar

 

 

Dr. An�ja Hennig is the Center's visiting scholar for 2012. Since 2010, Dr. Hennig has worked as a Lecturer and Research Associate at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt/Oder's Department of Comparative Politics. She has published extensively on religion's influence on politics and society and various topics in comparative politics. A graduate of Potsdam University (BA) and Free University Berlin (MA), Dr. Hennig earned her PhD from the University Viadrina in Frankfurt/Oder, where her thesis Moral Conflicts in Catholic Societies - Poland, Italy and Spain in Comparison was undertaken with a scholarship from the Robert Bosch Foundation and the German Association of Foreign Policy. From fall 1999 to spring 2000, she was a guest student at Uniwersytet Wrocławski /Breslau University under a GFPS scholarship.

CES Co-hosts Euro Crisis Conference

 

On November 3rd and 4th 2011, the Center for European Studies and the LBJ School of Public Affairs co-hosted the Crisis in the Eurozone conference. The event brought scholars and policymakers from across the globe to explore the unprecedented challenges faced by the Eurozone. The Conference drew press from Le MondeO Globo, La Pais, Swiss Public Radio, Eleftheriotypia, and Salon.com among other media. The conference's five sessions addressed the causes of the crisis, how it could be addressed, and its potential ramifications. The conference may be viewed in its entirety on the CES YouTube channel or Facebook page or on the LBJ website.

CES and CIBER Co-host Distinguished Business and Politics Lecture

On January 19th CES and the Center for International Business Education and Research co-hosted the latest in the Distinguished Business and Politics Lecture Series. Glamour and Grit: The Marketing of a Formula One Race Team was delivered by Matt Jones. As the Head of Marketing Services for the AT&T Williams Formula One team, Mr. Jones is responsible for the strategy and execution of team sponsorships and partnering, matching the assets of Williams F1 to each partner's commercial objectives.

 

The first lecture in the series brought European Union Ambassador, Jo�o Vale de Almeida, in October 2011 to deliver a talk entitled Why the Euro will survive.
