Honor and Healing Through Art and Truth:

Chief Bemidji Statue Dedication 

The public is invited to attend the unveiling and dedication of the new bronze statue of Shaynowishkung - "Chief Bemidji" on Saturday June 6, 2015 at 12:00 Noon at Library Park in Downtown Bemidji. 

 

The Ceremony includes

  • Flute music with Windy Downwind and Jon Romer
  • A prayer offered by an Ojibwe elder
  • An honor song as presented by The Eyabay drum group
  • "Healing through Truth: Shaynowishkung and the Time Period in which He Lived" presented by Elaine Fleming, History professor at LLTC
  • Remarks on honoring through art from statue sculptor Gareth Curtiss

Tribal and local dignitaries as well as family of Shaynowishkung will address the audience. The event will be followed by a walleye meal provided by Leech Lake Gaming and Catering.

 

Event organizers suggest early arrival to obtain parking and event seating. A drop off area will be available on Bemidji Avenue just north of the Carnegie Building. Parking will not be available in the Visitor Center's parking lot.

Newsletter Header: Ashley Hanson and Andrew Gaylord from PlaceBase Productions visited Bemidji this spring to speak to Region 2 artists and arts organizers and gather "Stories from the Field" for use in an original theater production that will premier at the Rural Arts and Culture Summit this June. Pottery Basics with Dave Hudson

Mondays, June 1-29, 2015

6:30-9:00 p.m.

at Clearwaters Life Center-Gonvick

 

This course covers clay preparation, hand-building, throwing on a wheel, and glaze techniques. Glazing of already fired pots is also an option for participants. $5.00 per class covers basic supplies. Call 218 487-5290 ext. 2 if you have questions.   

 

Photographing Your Artwork with Cal Rice

Saturday, June 13, 2015; Register by June 10.

10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (1 hour for lunch)

at The Depot in Baudette

 

Visual artists are often asked to present quality photographs of their work. This free professional development opportunity will help participants better understand the camera functions that will help show their work at its best. Participants are asked to bring their cameras and 1-3 pieces of their art.  Everyone will practice photographing their own work. June 5 - Registration extended for Park Rapids Summer Art Fair

The Park Rapids Downtown Business Association will sponsor an Art Fair in conjunction with the Bite of Park Rapids food, music and fun event Sunday, July 12. The deadline for artists to complete an application has been extended to Friday, June 5. More information and an application form are available HERE (under Current Promotions).

June 10- 1st Community Chorus Rehearsal for Summer Performances of Nature
at Park Rapids High School from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m.

TigerLion Arts, led by Tyson Forbes and Markell Kiefer, is bringing their production of

Nature - the mythic telling of Emerson and Thoreau's mutual love affair with the natural

world - to Park Rapids and Itasca this summer. Nature is a walking play, taking the audience on a journey through the natural environment as scenes unfold around them. September 14- Deadline for "It's Only Clay" Submissions     

The It's Only Clay (IOC) exhibit is a juried ceramics competition focusing on, and dedicated to, functional clay vessels. Each submission for IOC is judged in four areas: function, form/aesthetic, craftsmanship, and surface design. Selected works will be a part of the exhibit at the Watermark Art Center in Bemidji for six weeks during the months of  November and December.  Click HERE for more details.  

 

Noteworthy

Congratulations to Artist Marlon Davidson for his upcoming show "Davidson at 80, a Retrospective" at the Watermark Art Center Gallery, 426 Bemidji Avenue N. This show highlights Davidson's continuing career, featuring decades of work, all in one place for the first time ever. June 5 - July 25.

Congratulations to the Watermark Art Center and the opening of "gallery 505," a temporary retail gallery located at 505 Bemidji Ave N., in the future Watermark Art Center building in Bemidji. The gallery features large-scale artwork created by regional artists, all of which is available for purchase.
