Region 2 Arts Council (R2AC) recently awarded $71,085 through the Arts and Cultural Heritage Grants Program to individual artists, arts organizations and non-profits in Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, and Lake of the Woods counties


The Bemidji Sculpture Walk was awarded $6,000 to purchase fiberglass blanks for 2-D artists to paint/embellish for public display.  


Pequana Playhouse, Baudette,was awarded $3,580 to contract with Prairie Fire Theatre to provide a team of two directors to facilitate and present the children's theater production of "Peter Pan" by carrying out the auditions, rehearsals, and direction using primarily all local children or youth.


Carol Charnoski, Bemidji, received $1,000 to purchase materials and provide instruction in the Native American community in the creation of Spirit Walk moccasins and regalia.


Bemidji Community Theater received $6,000 to produce the children's musical "Disney's My Son Pinocchio."


Watermark Art Center, Bemidji was awarded $6,000 to host acclaimed poet and translator Jane Hirshfield, who will provide a craft lecture and evening reading as part of a weekend festival honoring poetry and haiku.


Northern Light Opera Company, Park Rapids was awarded $3,100to mount a production of the opera "The Apothecary" by Franz Joseph Haydn at the Park Rapids Armory.  


The Beltrami County Historical Society, Bemidji, received $4,460 to hire photographer Todd Geiger to create an artistic display consisting of current and historical photographs of Beltrami County scenes.


The Park Rapids Area Community Band was awarded $1,462 to perform a concert and sponsor a master class with Myroslava Hagen as guest clarinet soloist and educator.


Headwaters School for Music & the Arts, Bemidji,received $6,000 to bring two international performing arts groups to Bemidji in collaboration with Arts Midwest World Fest.


Lake of the Woods Art Guild, Baudette, received $6,000 to offset the cost of student tuition for their annual Frank Covino Classical Academic Oil Painting Seminar.


Aaron Tank, Bemidji, received 1,040 to direct and produce three performances of an original musical.


City of Bemidji Park & Recreation Department, was awarded $3,760 to provide a summer theater camp for youth in the Bemidji area.


Bemidji Symphony Orchestra was awarded $6,000 to present a concert featuring a commissioned work by composer Tod Machover for flute soloist Carol Wincenc and the symphony.


Nemeth Art Center, Park Rapids was awarded $1,970to host a Minneapolis Institute of Art satellite show in Park Rapids.


Paul Bunyan Playhouse, Bemidji was awarded $6,000 to produce the play "Noises Off."


The Park Rapids Lakes Area Arts Council was awarded $2,713 to sponsor the Youth Music & Art Showcase VI, showcasing the musical and artistic talents of Park Rapids area youth.


Rail River Folk School, Bemidji, received $6,000 to host the 2nd Annual Indigenous Arts Festival, outdoors on North Lake Irving.

Seeking Board Members from Hubbard and Lake of the Woods Counties


Region 2 Arts Council is currently seeking Board members from Hubbard and Lake of the Woods counties to fill a two-year term vacancy beginning August 1, 2014.  


Applications are due by May 15, 2014.


Those who feel that the visual, performing and literary arts are an important contribution to the quality of life in Minnesota should consider serving on the board of the Region 2 Arts Council.  


The board is responsible for planning, setting organizational policy and reviewing/awarding grants. It meets seven times per year in Bemidji on the third Monday of the month. Members are reimbursed for travel.


Region 2 Arts Council is one of eleven arts councils in the state of Minnesota and awards over $230,000 annually for art activities in the five counties of Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods and Mahnomen.  


The council operates with funds from the Minnesota State Legislature, the Arts and Cultural Heritage Legacy Fund and the McKnight Foundation.

May 4    Bemidji Symphony Orchestra presents Mahler's 2nd Symphony

Bemidji Symphony Orchestra presents "Stirring Celebrations!" featuring Mahler's 2nd Symphony "Resurrection." June 14    " She Wrights Festival" - original theater works and film

All shows written by women with some great pre-show music by local musicians too!  This is the first art event at the new non-profit Belle Thalia Creative Arts Space on an outdoor stage in a natural amphitheater (bring picnic supper , lawn chairs , or blanket) from 2:00 - dusk. 14.75 miles north of Bemidji on Hwy. 89. Music by Kari Pickett and others followed by "Sisters of the Quill and Skillet " by Minneapolis playwright actress Jane Curry, "Legend of White Woman Creek " by NYC based actress Katie Hartman, followed by the film "Salma" about a Tamil Muslim woman who is imprisoned in her home for 25 years in a forced marriage.


July 12    Bagley Art in the Park

Bagley's 27th Annual Art in the Park will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2014 in the Bagley City Park overlooking beautiful Lake Lomond. Free to the public from 9:00 a.m.  There will be musical entertainment, local dance performances and a child's art activity. CLIMB theatre performances will be happening throughout the day.  Come enjoy the beauty of the park and the talents of local artists.

May 21    "Data + Stories = Impact" Workshop- Bemidji

Region 2 Arts Council Logo In this hands-on workshop, learn how the Cultural Data Project or CDP's reporting features can help you combine your organization's story and data to effectively communicate with stakeholders, highlight accomplishments for funders, and raise important issues with policymakers.


This interactive session hosted by Minnesota CDP will demonstrate how to use data to support your talking points and illustrate your organization's impact. June 10    Springboard for the Arts presents Social Media for Artists
Region 2 Arts Council Logo Social Media is everywhere these days, but how do you know what is worth your precious time and energy? This crash course will equip you with a better understanding of the what, how and why of online tools for marketing your work, staying abreast of your field and connecting to your clients and colleagues. This session will introduce you to a variety of social media tools with a focus on Twitter and Facebook so you can make informed decisions about what works best for you and your artistic practice.  Join Springboard for the Arts' Artist Trainer Anna Metcalf in the community room at Coldwell Banker, 101 S. This juried national competition is open to artists who are 18 or older and are living in the United States. May 12   Deadline Extension for City of Bemidji RFP for Public Art

The City of Bemidji Waste Water Treatment facility has put out a call for emerging and established public artists or artist teams residing in Region 2 as well as Native artists residing in Becker, Cass, Roseau and Itasca counties to submit proposals for this public art opportunity. The complete RFP (Request for Proposal) and photographs of the proposed project site can be found on the City of Bemidji websitehttp://www.ci.bemidji.mn.us/ in the link to: WWTF Public Art Project. The Watermark Art Center and Paul Bunyan Communications are proud to present the 2014 "Peoples Choice Award" given at this year's High School Spring Exhibit to Trek North 11th Grader - Kali Benson with her winning art work, "Cityscape". 


Congratulations to Bob and Jo Panther for having been juried in to Gallery North. Bob is a photographer specializing in nature and wild life close-ups. Jo is a painter working in oils, pastels and watercolor.


Bemidji native Roy C. Booth announces that his horror short story, "The Redness at the Edge of the Sore," co-written with Axel Kohagen of Minneapolis, will appear in the upcoming anthology Rejected by Harren Press.
