Region 2 Arts Council WELCOMES three new Board Members who begin their term in September: Natalie Grosfield representing Beltrami county and Kevin Hedstrom and Joseph Allen representing Mahnomen county. Each new member is bringing unique talents and experience to our board. Check out their bios on our website. They join existing board members: Chair, Steve Prenevost, Vice-Chair, Justin Holley, Treasurer, Diana McLain, Steve Ballard, Nancy Cole, Linda Kaul, and Richard Longtine. They will be working together to provide grant funding, professional development opportunities and other services to the residents of Region 2.

 

Pay attention to the fall GRANT DEADLINES listed in this issue.  Deadlines are coming up fast and statistically fall is the best time of year to apply. "No-Risk" Workshop funding is available for individual artists to present workshops, or you can contract with an artist outside the region to teach in your community. Contact the R2AC staff to discuss your ideas or for grant writing assistance.

 

Keep an eye open for the fall schedule of free Professional Development workshops.  An announcement will be released in late September.

 

Native American artists interested in applying for grants will want to check out the September grant writing workshop dates on the three reservations and in Bemidji.  Dates are listed in this issue under R2AC News.

Seven Artist Mentor Grants Awarded

Congratulations to the following 8-12th Grade Artists:

attended the Reif Summer Dance Intensive in Grand Rapids, MN.

Fall Grant Deadlines: They're Coming Up Fast! 

Arts Project Grant: Deadline: September 11, 2013 

Open to any non-profit organization, schools (including community education offices), and units of government. These grants offer funding for a variety of art projects including costs related to performances or exhibitions, engagement of guest artists, and artists-in-residence. Organizations can apply for grants up to $2,500.

R2AC/McKnight Career Development Fellowship: Deadline: September 11, 2013 

Open to established artists in all disciplines who show a commitment to theircareer. This 18-month fellowship provides the opportunity for career development experiences that will add depth and advancement to any artistic career. Two $6,000 fellowships will be awarded per year.

R2AC/McKnight Anishinaabe Arts Initiative Grant: Deadline: October 1, 2013

Open American Indian artists residing in or near Region 2. People in the following counties are eligible for AAI grants: Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Becker, Roseau, Itasca, and Cass Counties. These grants provide an opportunity for up to $1000 for expenses to produce artistic work or for a creative opportunity.

 

R2AC/McKnight Individual Artist Grant: Deadline:October 3, 2013

Open to artists at various stages of their arts career, this grant provides financial assistance to artists who show serious commitment to creative growth and career advancement. Up to $1,000 is available for expenses associated with the exhibition, performance, or production of a specific creative work or learning opportunity, support for an established artist who wishes to mentor an exceptional student artist, projects involving collaborations between two or more artists.

Grant Writing Workshops for Anishinaabe Arts Initiative Grants

Got CDP?

Arts Organizations planning to apply for the Community Arts Support grant in 2014 will be required to have a CDP data profile by November 1, 2013. If you have not attended a Cultural Data Project workshop or webinar, go to http://www.pacdp.org/popups/instructionsall.aspx where online training and the CDP forms are available. Terri Widman, R2AC's Executive Director, has completed a CDP data profile for our organization and is available to assist you as well.  Start now, and by November 1, 2013 the answer to "Got CDP?" will be a resounding "YES!"

 

Funding Available for Arts Workshops

We have "no risk" workshop funding available for workshops in all artistic mediums.  You can invite an artist to our region to teach, or a regional artist can conduct a workshop and earn a presenters fee. Sept. 6    Faculty Recital at Headwaters School of Music and the Arts

There will be a faculty recital at 6:00 p.m. at the Headwaters School of Music and the Arts. This is a kickoff event for fall music lessons as well as a fundraiser for student scholarships. The Headwaters School of Music and the Arts is located at 519 Minnesota Avenue in downtown Bemidji.

 

Sept. 6    First Friday at the Wild Hare Bistro and Coffeehouse

Come to the opening reception from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the Wild Hare Bistro in Bemidji for mixed-media artist Terry Honstead's "Journey into Encaustic." Encaustic is one of the most ancient forms of art as well as one of the most enduring. Honstead experiments with the many different techniques of the medium, making her own with beeswax and damar resin, and mixing her own colors with dry pigment. This show includes small to mid-size encaustic/mixed media works featuring portraits, landscapes, and abstracts. Sept. 7   Artist Talk Back Session with R2AC/McKnight Career Development Fellow Del Lyren in Park Rapids

Come to the Nemeth Art Center in Park Rapids at 2 p.m. to hear musician Del Lyren discuss his fellowship experience "Learning Jazz Improvisation on an Electric Wind Instrument." Performances showing what he learned in lessons with Jeff Coffin, a description of the Electronic Wind Instrument, and pictures/stories from his tour with Dave Matthews Band are included in this presentation. 301 Court Avenue, Park Rapids, MN.

 

Sept. 10    Professor Emeritus David Hopper delves into Lincoln with HCLL in Park Rapids

By popular request, HCLL offers a follow-up to the recent "Lincoln at Gettysburg" program. Professor Emeritus David Hopper will delve into the Lincoln speeches of reality and of cinematic re-creation in the Spielberg film. Professor Hopper will focus on the wisdom and profundity of Abraham Lincoln. Headwaters Center for Lifelong Learning began its 8-program Fall 2013 season on Tuesday, September 3, 1:00-2:30 p.m. at the Northwoods Bank Community Room in Park Rapids. The first seven programs are at the bank location; the final program on October 22 will be at the Park Rapids Library. Check your local newspaper for a full listing of Thursday presentations.

 

Sept. 12     Flute Circle at Headwaters School of Music and the Arts

A Flute Circle will be meeting at the Headwaters School of Music and the Arts on Thursday, September 12 from 6:30pm-8:00pm.  This group is for beginners and advanced, all are welcome. This two-day event features a variety of music and workshops in the Historic Mentor School and Main Tent.  Each year the response and region-wide recognition continues to grow.  Workshop topics feature: Home & Garden, Cooking,Body, Mind, Spirit, Dance, fitness & fun.  A $40.00 Sisters Sojourn registration fee provides attendees with admission to all workshops and the concerts. The BCAC is planning a White Elephant rummage sale to take place the weekend of September 21st at the loading dock of the new building (505 Bemidji Avenue North, across from our current location).  Please make a note on your calendar and begin saving items. legacysmall September 28-29   Art Leap 2013 Invites Touring

The Park Rapids Lakes Area Arts Council (PRLAAC) will sponsor Art Leap 2013 Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28 and 29. Art Leap is an "open studio event" featuring artists' studios and culturally rich destinations in the Park Rapids area. For the eighth year, art lovers can use the Art Leap map to find their way to area artists' and artisans' studios, workshops and other featured locations. Studios will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. All Art Leap studios and events are free and open to the public. Maps are available at Blank Canvas Gallery in Park Rapids, the Park Rapids Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and other locations or can be downloaded at www.prlaac.org or www.parkrapids.com.

 

One highlight this fall will be the first Minneapolis Institute of Arts' Minnesota Artist Exhibition Program (MAEP) at the Nemeth Art Center. For the first time, the MAEP is taking the annual show on the road and it is coming to Park Rapids. This satellite show, a collection of paintings by Allen Brewer in response to the Gabor and Edith Nemeth Study Collection, will be on display during Art Leap.

 

Live musical performances will add to the experience. Eric Bervig will sing and play classic rock at Moose Creek/Moose Creek Village in Downtown Park Rapids, and Lori Goulet Reich will return to sing and play folk, country, blues and traditional music at Paul Albright's Sculpture Studio, rural Akeley.  Art Leap 2013 is sponsored by the Park Rapids Lakes Area Arts Council.

This once-a-week, four-week drawing workshop with visual artist Joan Wilson is for Beginning and Intermediate Artists.  Cost is $110, location is in Joan's studio at 315 Park Ave. NW in Bemidji, time is 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (pack a lunch). Registration deadline is September 10.  As Joan says,


"There are no short cuts. The road to artistic proficiency is paved with discarded drawings. Please join us as we work both indoors and out, trying new techniques and materials once a week in a four-week course.  Learn strategies and exercises to build confidence in your drawings and sketches. Strap on that wrist protector if you need it, polish your glasses if you wear them, and get ready to draw, draw, draw!"

This class is an introduction to the fiber arts form of Cavandoli Knotting. No prior knowledge is necessary. Students will learn mounting, vertical and horizontal half-hitch knots, how to change color as well as finishing techniques.

R2AC Color Logo Sept. 6    Deadline Submissions for It's Only Clay

The Bemidji Community Art Center and the Bemidji State University college of Technology, Art and Design present the annual It's Only Clay National Juried Ceramics Competition and Exhibition. It's Only Clay is a collaboration sponsored by the BCAC and Bemidji State University and features a lecture and workshop on the campus of Bemidji State University by a guest artist and a juried exhibition of functional ceramics by the Bemidji Community Art Center on display in November and December of each year.

Sept. 7   Late Summer Writer's Retreat with Dr. CarolAnn Russell

Call for Vendors    Art in the Swamp at Shevlin Sawdust Days

Sawdust days run from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Sept. 14 in Shevlin at the City Park.  Art in the Swamp is open to all crafters and fine artists.  Spots are $10.  No electricity available, but generators are an option. For more information, go to Shevlin Sawdust Days on Facebook.

 

 

Sept. 13    Deadline for Submissions to the Brainerd Writers Alliance 2013 Writing Contest

Calling all Minnesota writers! The Brainerd Writers Alliance is accepting submissions in fiction (2500 word limit), creative non-fiction (2500 word limit), and poetry (3 poem limit) for their 2013 BWA Writing Contest.  $15.00 entrance fee allows one entry per category.  Submit only pieces that have neither been previously published, nor have received previous awards. Send two hard copies on standard 8 ˝  x 11 paper, stapled separately; no name on entry, just title, category and word count; double-spaced, Times New Roman font or similar. Poetry is single-spaced, no word count necessary.

 

On an unattached cover sheet, put your name, contact info (address, phone, email) and the titles of each piece with their categories (ie. "Through the Night" - creative non-fiction).  Prizes are $75 for first place and $50 for second place in each category.

Send cover sheet, check made out to BWA, and two copies of each entry by September 13, 2013 to:

Indie Authors Press is seeking reprints of short stories that have previously been published, written by established and upcoming writers from around the world with a Cyberpunk or Sci-Fi theme. Congratulations to visual artist Marly Kaul. His exhibit at the Anderson Center in Red Wing, MN opens on Friday, October 4th.  Follow this link to a written piece on Kaul and his work by the director of the Anderson Center.   

 

Congratulation to Region 2 Arts Council/McKnight Career Development Fellow Dawn Standera. One of her sculptural knotting pieces was selected for the cover of Fiber Art Almanac. Vol 4 2014. Stay posted for more of Standera's work to be featured in an article in FAN.

 

Congratulations to Roy C. Booth and R. Thomas Riley whose short story "Gray Eagle's Revenge" has been selected to appear in Stupefying Stories' Tales from The Wild Weird West. Roy C. Booth's zombie comedy play, "How to Make a Brain Souffle," will also be published in the upcoming "Quick and Painless" anthology by Original Works Publishing.

 

Have you heard? The Bemidji Community Art Center has unveiled their new name: Watermark Art Center. As described in their newsletter, "The word watermark refers to the translucent design or label impressed on quality papers used in printmaking and other art applications. It also appears as an indicator of authenticity on paper currency." In addition, "The lakes rivers and streams of Minnesota are embedded in our culture and consciousness. The new name is reflective of both the visual arts and our northern Minnesota environment." Congratulations! We are eagerly awaiting more new developments!
