Greetings!
R2AC is co-hosting a collaborative arts event, Arms Around the Armory, in Park Rapids on Monday, August 5th at the Armory building. A collaborative community effort is under way to create an arts center for community arts events and arts education. The public is invited. See more information about the event on the right sidebar.
It's time to consider which R2AC GRANTS will help you accomplish your artistic goals or needs. The August 14, 2013 deadline for the Arts and Cultural Heritage grant is fast approaching but there is still time to get it done. We have $70,000 available to award this round! Individual artists can apply for up to $3,000 if the project includes a community component. Non-profit organizations, schools and local governments can request up to $6,000 for art events/activities, lifelong learning opportunities, and arts and cultural fairs or festivals.
September 11th is the deadline date for the Arts Project grant, with a $2,500 maximum request limit, and the $6,000 Career Development Fellowship for artists.

We have "no risk" workshop funding available for workshops in all artistic mediums. You can invite an artist to our region to teach, or a regional artist can conduct a workshop and earn a presenters fee. The Armory building is one of the most prominent features of the downtown Park Rapids landscape, and a true community asset. Establishing the Armory Building as the Upper Mississippi Center for the Arts will ensure an anchor for the arts and continued economic revitalization in downtown Park Rapids.

Fall Grant Deadlines
Applications are available for the following Grants at the Region 2 Arts Council Office, 426 Bemidji Avenue, Bemidji, MN 56601 and are also available for download from our website , under "Grants."
Projects funded through R2AC's grants programs should have primary impact on and accessibility to residents of Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods, and Mahnomen Counties. Applicants must reside in or organizations must be located in located in the five counties of Region 2. We would be happy to discuss your ideas with you, help you locate an artist, or assist you in completing the application form. Arts and Cultural Heritage Grants: Deadline:August 14, 2013Open to artists in all art disciplines, any non-profit organization, school (including community education offices), and units of government. These grants support three key areas: Arts Activities and Arts Access, Arts Education, and Cultural Heritage.
Individual artists can apply for grants up to $3,000 and organizations can apply for grants up to $6,000.
Arts Project Grant: Deadline: September 11, 2013 Open to any non-profit organization, schools (including community education offices), and units of government. These grants offer funding for a variety of art projects including costs related to performances or exhibitions, engagement of guest artists, and artists-in-residence. Organizations can apply for grants up to $2,500. R2AC/McKnight Career Development Fellowship: Deadline: September 11, 2013 Open to established artists in all disciplines who show a commitment to their career. This 18-month fellowship provides the opportunity for career development experiences that will add depth and advancement to any artistic career. Two $6,000 fellowships will be awarded per year. R2AC/McKnight Anishinaabe Arts Initiative Grant: Deadline: October 1, 2013 Open American Indian artists residing in or near Region 2. People in the following counties are eligible for AAI grants: Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Becker, Roseau, Itasca, and Cass Counties. These grants provide an opportunity for up to $1000 for expenses to produce artistic work or for a creative opportunity. R2AC/McKnight Individual Artist Grant: Deadline:October 3, 2013 Open to artists at various stages of their arts career, this grant provides financial assistance to artists who show serious commitment to creative growth and career advancement. Up to $1,000 is available for expenses associated with the exhibition, performance, or production of a specific creative work or learning opportunity, support for an established artist who wishes to mentor an exceptional student artist, projects involving collaborations between two or more artists. Aug. 3 Midwest Multiples Reception at Nemeth Art Center
Midwest Multiples, Nemeth's annual juried show of prints and artist books, will be opening on August 3, 4:00-6:00 p.m. Midwest Multiples was juried by Rachel Gladfelter, the associate director of Pace Prints Chelsea, and features 16 artists from across the Midwest. Aug. 5 Marsh Muirhead Book Release at Sparkling Waters Restaurant in Bemidji
The BCAC's Spoken Word Committee is pleased to present Marsh Muirhead and her cold martini, Muirhead's first published collection of haiku poetry. On Monday, August 5th beginning at 6:00 p.m., Muirhead will read from his collection, discuss the history and practice of haiku, and answer questions about this small and sometimes misunderstood area of poetry. Reservations for the event are suggested and can be made by calling Sparkling Waters (444-3214) and mentioning the event. Copies of her cold martini will be available for sale and signing. There is no fee for the reading, and attendees can order drinks, appetizers, or dinner during or after the presentation.

Aug. 5 - 16 World Class Artist Frank Covino Returns to Baudette
Classical academic art professor Frank Covino will make his annual sojourn to Baudette to instruct two week-long seminars August 5-9 and August 12-16. Classes will be held at the Lake of the Woods School Art Room. The Classical Academic Oil Painting Seminar covers traditional oil painting from the renaissance through the early 20th century. These techniques and materials were used throughout Europe, Great Britain, and North America. A variety of ethnic and cultural traditions used the same methods students will learn during the seminar. This intense professional instruction teaches students transferable skills and empowers them to continue the creation of archival museum quality art that will stand the test of time. Enrollment is open to the general public of all skill levels and abilities. Beginners are welcome. Class size is limited to 15 students (including the coordinator) due to space available and Mr. Covino's commitment to ensure that each student receives quality individual instruction. Intrigued by haiku? Come to "The Tip of the Tip of the Iceberg -- the history and practice of haiku - - a discussion and workshop. It's not seventeen syllables anymore!" on Saturday August 17th from 9:00 am to 12:00 p.m. in the Bemidji Library Conference Room. Both novice and experienced writers are on equal footing in this area of poetry - it's been said that the very young and the very old are most likely to come up with excellent haiku. We will mine our life experiences, memory, and the images that deeply affect us in building lines that, in a moment, reveal so much more. We will read and study a number of classic haiku to see how truth is found through humor, sadness, epiphany. Optional - After Workshop Lunch Session at 12:30 - restaurant, TBA. For information or to register call (218) 444-7570 or email [email protected] Aug. 23-24 "Seen from a Window:" two-day painting workshop at Clearwaters Life Center in Gonvick Barb Lidfors is an artist from Germany who brings a cultural diversity to her classes that is refreshing and a format that is interactive and engaging. Class will be held Friday evening through Saturday afternoon, Aug. 23 6:00-9:00 p.m. and Aug 24. From 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. This workshop includes techniques and skills in creating portrait / land-scape "Window" scenes. We will have canvas boards for each participant, supply paints and brushes and will also have painted "framed-in window" areas on the walls to paint in for those who would like to participate in creating a "window" mural, continuing the beautification and permanent expressions of art on the walls. Cost: $15 for the two-day workshop (which will include snacks, drinks and a lunch). This activity is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Bemidji Area Arts Endowment, a component fund of the Northwest Minnesota Foundation. On Saturday August 24th from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., come to "Contracts & Copyright: Traditional, Self- and E-Publishing, & Publishing Services" -a repeat of the very popular workshop Hauser held in June during the Bemidji Library Book Festival. Whether you self-publish, use a publishing service, or publish with a traditional press, you should understand your "intellectual property" (IP) rights. An introduction to rights, royalties, contracts, pitfalls, traps, advantages and other aspects of publishing rights and contracts, with additional information on seeking an agent or publisher will be covered in this workshop. Rain or Shine (there are indoor alternatives in the event of inclement weather). Artists/Crafters must maintain and staff their booth during festival hours on Saturday: 10 a.m.- 7 p.m. The Harvest Moon Art Fair is a juried show. Aug. 23 Deadline for Artists' Call for Library Art Installation The Park Rapids Area Library has been awarded a grant to commission an artwork for the city's public library. The intent is to provide an art installation that celebrates the library, its mission and its relationship to the community. The library has three areas where an installation could work: an exterior wall, garden and interior wall space. IOC is dedicated to functional clay vessels and open to artists 18 years or older in the United States. All work must be functional ceramics. Sept. 13 Deadline for Submissions to the Brainerd Writers Alliance 2013 Writing Contest Calling all Minnesota writers! The Brainerd Writers Alliance is accepting submissions in fiction (2500 word limit), creative non-fiction (2500 word limit), and poetry (3 poem limit) for their 2013 BWA Writing Contest. $15.00 entrance fee allows one entry per category. Submit only pieces that have neither been previously published, nor have received previous awards. Send two hard copies on standard 8 ½ x 11 paper, stapled separately; no name on entry, just title, category and word count; double-spaced, Times New Roman font or similar. Poetry is single-spaced, no word count necessary. On an unattached cover sheet, put your name, contact info (address, phone, email) and the titles of each piece with their categories (ie. "Through the Night" - creative non-fiction). Prizes are $75 for first place and $50 for second place in each category. Congratulations to poet Marsh Muirhead, who has been selected to moderate a panel discussion at this year's Haiku Society of America's annual national meeting in Chicago in September. Editors of the major English-language haiku journals will address the question, "What Is the Future of American Haiku?" Toshio Kimura of Tokyo will be giving the keynote address at this year's meeting, and attendees are coming from several countries and 25 states.
