Artists, Arts and Community Leaders, Are you interested in helping bridge partnerships between the arts and community issues? The June 2013 Rural Arts and Cultural Summit theme is "Leveraging Arts and Culture to Build Thriving Communities," and will feature presentations, workshops, and networking opportunities to connect artists and leaders from around the state. http://racsummit.org/about.html R2AC is offering a limited number of free scholarships to the Rural Arts and Cultural Summit held at the University of Minnesota Morris Campus on June 5-6, 2013. Summit applications will be awarded on a first come-first served basis. R2AC will strive to give equal distribution of scholarships among our five counties to help defray registration, lodging and mileage expenses. Application deadline is April 12, 2013. Artist Mentor Grant Program Deadline is April 4, 2013
Artist Mentor Grants are available for 8th-12th grade student artists in all disciplines. Funding covers 20 hours of meeting time with a professional artist (known as a mentor) of the students' choosing. Some students use their funding to help cover the cost of an arts camp, class, or workshop in the state of Minnesota. Artist Mentor Grants have a $600 value. April 2, 4 "Bemidji The Middle Years: 1941-1961"
The Bemidji Public Library, in collaboration with the Beltrami County Historical Society, presents two showings of the documentary "Bemidji The Middle Years: 1941-1961" on Tuesday April 2 at 12:00 noon, and again on Thursday April 4, at 7:00 p.m. Both showings will be held at the Bemidji Public Library.
"Bemidji the Middle Years" is a co-production of the Beltrami County Historical Society and Gary Burger Video-Audio, and was made possible by the generous support of the George W. Neilson Foundation, Beltrami County, the Region 2 Arts Council, Pat Riley and Natalie Roholt, H. B., Ina Roholt, and through the participation of area residents.
April 2 Headwaters Center for Lifelong Learning presents "Architecture as Art" with Jon Rondestvedt
HCLL presents the fourth presentation in their series "Our Shared Heritage Shown through Art" from 1p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Northwoods Bank community room in Park Rapids. Rondestvedt says of his presentation: "This topic will explore how we humans use architecture not only to serve utile ends but aesthetic ends as well."

April 4 Attractive Children - One Man's Unmasking of Internalized Oppression
The Minnesota debut of this one-man play with visionary artist Okokon Udo begins at 7 p.m. in the Wild Rose Theater, 501 Bemidji Ave. N. The second hour of this play includes a talk-back session between the actor and the audience. Voluntary donations will be accepted at the door in lieu of a ticket price. Thank you to the Northwest MN Foundation for their generous support.
April 5 - 7 and 12 - 14 Peter Pan the Musical!
Bemidji Community Theater, in collaboration with the Paul Bunyan Playhouse, presents Peter Pan. The whole family will enjoy this innovative musical adaptation by Piers Chater Robinson of J.M. Barrie's classic tale of a mischievous young boy who is able to fly. He is joined by the lost boys, Captain Hook and his pirates, the Darling children and, of course, the mysterious Tinker Bell. The show is directed by Mary Knox-Johnson, with musical direction by Karen Bradley and accompanied by Wayne Hoff.
Performances are Apr.5, 6, 12, 13 at 7:30 pm and Sunday matinees on Apr. 7 and 14 at 2:00pm at the historic Chief Theater, downtown Bemidji.

April 5 Art from Within Exhibit Opening Reception
Bemidji-ACLU-MN (Greater Minnesota Racial Justice North Project) is excited by the quality and number of submissions for the fourth annual "Art from Within" exhibit. The exhibit will be at the Headwaters School of Music and the Arts, 519 Minnesota Avenue, Bemidji, Minnesota from April 5th through April 27th and features artwork that gives a personal and compelling view into the lives of real people. The event is free and open to the public. The community is invited for the opening reception on April 5th at 5:00 pm followed by the art awards announcements at 6:00 pm.
April 5 13th Annual Bemidji Area High School Spring Exhibit

The Abbey Road Band has become one of the most sought after Beatles Tribute Bands in the United States. They might not look like the Beatles, but everyone agrees they SOUND like the Beatles. April 23 R2AC/McKnight Career Development Fellowship Award Recipient Al Belleveau to Present Artist Talk Back Session Albert Belleveau brings an artist dialog, question and answer period and Rock Iron Art demonstrations to two sessions in the Drum Room at Wadiswan, White Earth Tribal & Community College, 2250 College Road, Mahnomen, MN 56557. His sculptures were created as a result of fellowship research of ancient art. Event times: April 23, 2013 at 1:00 PM which is open to all students, staff, faculty, and the community and then again at 5:30 PM a session will be open for the community in conjunction with WETCC campus coffee house night. April 26 R2AC/McKnight Career Development Fellowship Award Recipient Del Lyren to Present Artist Talk Back Session
Del Lyren will perform a jazz piece on EWI (electronic wind instrument) using Logic Pro, Sonic Cell, and other electronic sound modules for special effects and accompaniment, and discuss the EWI, how it works, and the potential uses for it in the future. His talk will include original compositions, a discussion of his fellowship experience beginning with his jazz studies with Jeff Coffin, how his work has been incorporated into the MIDIots (faculty electronic music ensemble) at BSU, a visual representations of his tour with Dave Matthews Band. This event will be held in Park Rapids at the Gordon Van Wert gallery on April 26 at 4pm. The talk is free and open to the public. April 11&19 Slam Rools and Skool
This Slam Poetry Workshop is a 2 time course held at the Rail River Folk School in Bemidji. Thursday April 11th from 6-9 p.m. covers the rules of a slam competition and tools and tips needed to write an effective slam poem. Participants will write a poem or two. Friday April 19th from 6-9p.m. is a slam contest to be held between the students from the first class.

Join this innovative Boston-area instructor and explore gravity, momentum, flow, improvisational movement and communication with others through dance. April 13, 20, 27 and May 4, 11 Painting to Understanding - Translating Ideas Into Paint
Local painter Paula J. Swenson will take participants through the creative process from conception to implementation and from completion of a painting to its exhibition. Participants will learn the practices of painting and self-expression and how to find new ways to problem solve and stretch their imaginations. The workshop will culminate in a May exhibit of participants' work at the Wild Hare Bistro and Coffeehouse in Bemidji, MN.
Participants will meet with Paula on Saturdays, at River of Time Studio on 1017 N. Plantagenet Road SE in Bemidji, MN. Session 1 will be from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. All other sessions run until 2:00 p.m. A schedule to hang art for the participants' May exhibition at the Wild Hare will be determined during the workshop.

High school and college-aged artists of all kinds who are considering a career in the arts are invited Rail River Folk School in Bemidji from 1-4 for a workshop and discussion designed to give you some tools to help keep you on your path as an artist. The reputable Springboard for the Arts from Fergus Falls is coming to facilitate. This event is FREE and snacks will be provided. Participants must register in advance by April 23. May 1 Writers Workshop with Angela Foster and Candace Simar
Join these sisters and writers from 12:00-2:00 at the Gonvick Legion Cabin for a 2-hour writing workshop following their program "Farm Girls" Using Photographs to Inspire Life Stories. Do you worry your children and grandchildren will never know the simple pleasures of growing up in a world without cell phones and Internet? Have you always wanted to write your life story? Through the use of free writes and prompts, participants will begin putting their memories onto paper. You will get practical advice to help you write stories your family will treasure for generations. Participants should bring at least one family photograph for inspiration. By the end of the class, you will have drafted the beginning of a short memoir piece.

April 15 Application Deadline for Bemidji - First City of Arts Studio Cruise
Calling all artists with studios within a 40 mile radius of Bemidji, Minnesota! Applications are now being taken for the 6th annual Studio Cruise, a working studio event which provides an opportunity for artists to invite the public into their studios to showcase their art and craft. Studio Cruise dates: Oct. 18, 19, 20. Deadline for all applications is postmark by April 15, 2013. Fees include a $10 non-refundable jury fee and $100 artist participation fee. Artists! Expand your buyer contacts, exhibit your work, and at the same time contribute to a great cause at this Art Event for the Bemidji Food Shelf! Artists are invited to contribute works of art and join this fun, high profile event on June 1st, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. at the Hungry Bear- First City Ballroom/convention center in Bemidji, MN. May 1 Registration Deadline for Artists' Call for New Juried Art Fair
The Park Rapids Downtown Business Association is adding a Juried Art Fair to an already successful food, music and fun event Sunday, July 14. The Park Rapids area draws thousands of summer visitors and seasonal residents who enjoy our lakes and rich cultural traditions every year. Registration deadline is May 1. To plan a more successful weekend, artists also are invited to apply for the Downtown Art Fair at the Old Central School Grounds in Grand Rapids Saturday, July 13, sponsored by the MacRostie Art Center. The MacRostie's application may be downloaded at http://macrostieartcenter.org/for-artists/. Park Rapids and Grand Rapids are about 90 miles apart.
Lot 6 Art Fair
The 3rd year of the Lot 6 Art Fair will be happening on Saturday June 8 in Bemidji. For Early Bird booth discounts, get your applications in by April 1st. Returning artists DO NOT need to submit a jury fee - unless you are applying with a different medium then the previous years. There are a limited amount of double booths spaces (10x20) available to artist wishing to have more space. There will be a small number of free upgrades to a double space to artists wishing to demonstrate during the festival, please see details on the application. In addition, there is a limited number of FREE booths to non-profit organizations. If you are a non-profit interested in an information booth, please send us a small statement about your organization and what you intend to have available at your booth during the festival. Writers' Groups in Bemidji
The Bemidji Community Art Center's Spoken Word Committee is working in partnership with area writers to provide opportunities to attend free writers' groups. Thanks to individual volunteers, who have been willing to make meeting arrangements and serve as contacts, the groups have been self-sustaining.
The Children's Book Group invites new members. It is a secular group that appreciates the meeting space generously provided by the Evangelical Free Church, 115 Carr Lake Road, SW. Meeting dates are still flexible and are planned month to month. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. on April 1st in the Fireside Room. No prior publishing experience required.
The Poetry Group is also open for new members. It meets monthly in people's homes on Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. The next meeting will be on Saturday April 6th.
RA Writers' Group (established years ago) is a mixed genre group that meets the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Minnesota Energy building on 2nd Street and Minnesota Avenue. It, too, is open for new members at this time. Enter by knocking on the West door as you face the building on 2nd Street.
The Lit Wits is a novel writers' group. Openings will be posted in future R2AC Newsletters.

May 3 Deadline to apply Native Arts and Cultures Foundation Artist Fellowships
The $20,000 fellowships awarded by the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation (NACF) recognize the creativity and expression of exceptional Native artists who have made significant impact in the field. American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian artists are encouraged to apply for this unique national fellowship honoring excellence by Native artists in six disciplines: dance, filmmaking, literature, music, traditional arts and visual arts.
Artists who are members of federally and state-recognized U.S. tribes, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian communities can review criteria in full and apply by the May 3 deadline at: http://nacf.us/2014-fellowships. Baudette Depot Seeks Smithsonian Institution Exhibit Assistance
The Baudette Depot is looking for people to help with the current traveling Smithsonian Exhibit "The Way We Worked" coming to Baudette on May 11- June 22, 2013. The Depot Preservation Alliance, as a host organization, is responsible for the install, take-down, and open house during the six week exhibit run. Baudette Depot Seeks Photos and Stories
Attention: Local stories and photos are needed for 3 upcoming exhibits at the Depot! The Transportation Exhibit seeks transportation related photos from the first half of the 20th century taken in the Lake of the Woods area. For the special "Signatures Exhibit," photos or stories about family members "riding the rails" as a hobo or as an orphan traveling to a new home are needed. For the traveling Smithsonian Exhibit "The Way We Worked," short narratives about your first job and what you learned from it (it doesn't have to be a paid job) are needed by May 1st. Noteworthy
Congratulations to Bemidji's Roy C. Booth and Craig Myran. Their horror/urban fantasy short story, "Package #900420" has been accepted for Scarlett River Press's upcoming "Haunted Lens" anthology.
Booth has also been named a panelist for the "21st-Century Publishing: Industry, Media, and the Future of Print" conference sponsored by the University of Minnesota Duluth to be held on April 12. The panel: "Marketing and Retailing Books in the 21st Century: Retailer and Librarian Perspective."
