learning to deal with digital learning
Many parents face issues related to the computer-based assignments their students receive. FCPS will soon hold a series of community engagement sessions for students, parents, staff, and community members to share their thoughts on a digital learning vision for FCPS. The goal is to contribute to the development of a strategic plan for digital learning.

The meetings will provide an overview of digital learning and then have attendees work in groups to share ideas and information. The collective input will be shared with the School Board in the fall. One meeting will be held in each cluster. The Cluster 1 (Langley pyramid) meeting will be held at Great Falls Elementary on Mon, June 3 from 7-9 pm in the school cafeteria.
mclean center seeks youth board members
The McLean Community Center Governing Board for 2013-14 will vote on new members during McLean Day. There are currently NO youth candidates for the LHS school area, but write-in candidates are allowed. Write-in youth candidates must have 10 votes from teens who live within the Langley high school boundary. The Elections Tent will be at the entrance to the event Sat May 18 at Lewinsville Park, 1659 Chain Bridge Rd. from 10:30 am to 5 pm. For more information, contact the McLean Community Center, or check their web site, www.mcleancenter.org.
awards, honors & kudos
parents thanking teachers: Gratitude and thanks to all parents who donated gift cards and money for Staff Appreciation at Langley. Our PTSA and faculty are so grateful for your generosity!

And, thanks to the PTSA Hospitality Committee for hosting a royal lunch for our loyal bunch of Langley faculty. (Thank you to the parent bakers, as well.) It was a fantastic luncheon, and a great way to show our staff how much we appreciate them!

best of the year: The Greater McLean Chamber honored our own Norma Jamsheed as Employee of the Year, Jackie Ryan as Student of the Year, and Jennifer Bonafide as Teacher of the Year at their Annual Education Awards Breakfast.

art excellence: Congratulations to Langley Senior Ashley Morabito on being selected as an Emerging Artist this year. She will be displaying her photography at the 2013 Celebrate Fairfax! Festival at the Fairfax County Government Center June 8-9.

scholarship: Congratulations to Langley senior Mujtaba Mumtaz Wani, one of 22 FCPS students, and 2500 students nationally, to win a prestigious $2,500 National Merit Scholarship.
debate & ethics
debate: Langley sent seven students to the Washington-Arlington Catholic Forensics League's Metrofinal Championship Tournament (for all speech competitors in Virginia, DC, and parts of Maryland). Three of them -- senior Aimee Cho (captain), sophomore Kaita Gurian, and freshman Zahra Quettawala -- qualified for the national championship, held in Philadelphia over Memorial Day weekend. Zahra placed 3rd overall in her category (declamation) and Aimee placed 8th overall in her category (oratory). Sophomore Ethan Zell got 7th overall in his category (impromptu).

ethics: In their first year competing, a team of five Langley students won the Baltimore Area High School Ethics Bowl on Feb. 9. The five students -- seniors Drew Armstrong, Caitlin Duffy and Erik Pike, and juniors Jane Sevila and Monique Swirsky -- were coached by their Nature of Knowledge teacher, Allison Cohen.
arts
arts competition finals: The finals of the 2013 James C. Macdonald Arts Scholarship Competition will be held Thurs, May 23 at 8 pm
in the Alden Theatre. Langley HS is proud to announce that eleven of the fifteen finalists are LHS students. The finalists performed before a panel of judges in a preliminary competition in April and were chosen to move forward. The final competition is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the awarding of the scholarship prizes. The Langley community is encouraged to come support all of our artists. Finalists from Langley are:

dance:  Sotiria Sgovros, Charlee Vasiliadis, Kristen Wolaver
theatre:  Rachel Mayman, Christopher Paul, Kathleen Welch
vocal music: Madeleine Chalk, Jack Flatley
visual art:  Jennie Kim, Caroline Russell, Suhyun Yoon

chorus: The award-winning LHS Chorus presents "Get on Your Feet: Pop Hits Through the Decades" at their annual spring show on Thurs, May 30 and Fri, May 31 at 7:30 pm. The choirs will be performing songs from the 50's (Shake, Rattle and Roll) to current pop hits of Kelly Clarkson, Colbie Caillat, and Plain White T's. There will be selections from The Temptations to Madonna to disco to a show-stopping tribute to Michael Jackson. Tickets are available at the door or from any choral student at $10 a person (special $5 ticket price for students in middle and elementary school). Join us for a fabulous evening of  music!
sports
softball: Langley Varsity Softball finished fourth in the Liberty District. The District Tournament begins May 15 at home. Come out and support these girls!

junior varsity sports: The up-and-coming athletes at Langley have closed out their seasons, largely with winning records!
Boys JV Soccer ended their season with a record of 8 wins, two losses, two ties, and the Girls similarly finished up 8-0-4.
In JV Lacrosse, the Girls had a 10-1 record; the Boys combined wins with a few ties for an undefeated season.
JV Softball wrapped up with a 6-8 record; JV Baseball cleared a 10-4 record.

tennis-boys: This week, the Boys' Varsity Tennis team begins competing in the Regional Team Tournament. Two weeks ago, the Saxons won a thrilling victory over the McLean Highlanders to earn the second seed in this tournament. Although we would have a preferred a district championship and the number one seed, TJ proved to be too tough an opponent . . . so far.

Last week our number two singles player, Kevin Shen, upset his TJ counterpart in the District Individual Tournament and will head to the Regional Individual Tournament this week. Our number two doubles team, JT von Seggern and Joe LaFuria, upset McLean's number one team by the decisive score of 10-4 to place third in this same tournament. All of this is to say, we are heading into the Regional Team tournament with our confidence sky-high and the desire and expectation of returning to the State Championships this year.

volleyball-girls: Girls' Volleyball is looking forward to another strong season this Fall 2013! Tryout information as well as practice and match schedules are all available on the website, www.langleysports.org. Click on the FILES section under GIRLS' VARSITY VOLLEYBALL. Good luck to our graduating seniors Cathrine Baek, Hoai-Nam Bui, Jenna Dean and Maureen Marsh as they continue their academic and athletic careers in college!

last ptsa coffee of the year
The final Principal/PTSA Coffee of the year will be held Wed, May 29 at 9:15 in The Choral Room. We will vote on the incoming PTSA Board, the Amended Budget for the remainder of this school year, and the proposed Budget for 2013-14.
will you be an angp angel?
Junior Parents: We still need several parent volunteers to take down decorations from the ANGP (all night graduation party) at Langley. The party gets started on Thurs, June 13 at 11 pm. We need volunteers to assist with take-down from 2:45-4:30 am to get the school ready for classes on Friday morning. This is a long-standing tradition and one that we will benefit from next year when our students have their ANGP. Please let us know if you can help by emailing Mary Welch at <maryswelch@verizon.net>. Thanks so much and a special thank you to those parents who have already answered our plea!
