freshmen
The last class coffee of the year was held last week. Among the helpful speakers was Jan Dabroski, Langley's Assement Coach, with information on the testing that will begin in earnest next year. She reminded parents that while there's still plenty of time to figure out where and how to apply to college, we should already be assembling those materials that will be useful at application time - awards, records of community service, winning projects, etc. For many, that report of the ACT Explore test should have been the first item in the file.
sophomores
Covering the topic "Wrapping Up Sophomore Year and Looking Ahead," Hannah Hurlburt from the Career Counseling Office will give an overview at the class coffee of what to expect during junior year. If you have specific questions to email or would like to meet with her, contact her at <hwhurlburt@fcps.edu>. Please note that the date changed to Mon May 13
at 9 am in the Auditorium.
juniors
Save the date for Tue, May 7, for our last class coffee of the year. Come to the Auditorium at 9:15 am for coffee and a presentation at 9:30 am. The topic will be "What To Expect Senior Year," by Hannah Hurlburt and Counselor Jen Baldesare.
◆ Calling all junior parents: ANGP needs your help! The junior class is responsible for taking down the decorations before school starts on Fri, June 14. We will begin the process at 2:45 am and should be done by 4:30 am. Yes, that's AM! Please, please, please consider volunteering (you can also take a peek at what's in store for our rising seniors next year). Contact <maryswelch@verizon.net> if you are available.

ANGP box seats and limo raffle: Don't forget to purchase your raffle tickets to win 6 reserved box seats at graduation and limo service to and from the ceremony! This is a great opportunity to avoid the hassles of driving and parking and to enjoy a close-up view of the graduating seniors, as they receive their diplomas. Raffle tickets are available on PTSA website or by clicking here:
http://www.langleyptsa.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/ANGP-2013-Limo-Fundraiser-Flyer.pdf. You may enter as many times as you like. Please note that these reserved seats replace your general admission tickets.
student services
The Student Services Department is actively organizing and preparing to administer over 2,000 AP exams in the next couple of weeks until May 16. Please make appointments to see counselors if you need to discuss concerns regarding your child(ren). We know how easy it is to just stop in (especially after class coffees when you are already in the building), but it is actually very difficult for us. Thank you in advance for your support and patience.
◆ If you're able to help, proctoring is needed for these AP exams through Thu, May 16, starting at either 8 am or noon. Training is provided prior to the exam. To volunteer, contact Jennifer Baldesare at
The PTSA awards a Student Service Award to those "unsung" or unrecognized students who have used their talent and/or time for the betterment of the school and/or the community at large far above that of other students. Contact Asst. Principal Fred Amico at <Fred.Amico@fcps.edu> or Aradhana Luthra at <alluthra@yahoo.com> for a nomination form and details about how to recognize this special student. Nominations are due Fri, May 3.

principal's message
|
Dear Langley High School Families:
This coming week is Teacher Appreciation Week. Please join me in celebrating this hardworking and dedicated corps of professionals. In my career, I have not worked with a finer faculty than the one assembled here at Langley. Many of you have made contributions to celebrate our faculty next week - THANK YOU!
Mission/Vision: A few months ago I announced an initiative to solicit your opinion on Langley High School's mission and/or vision. Nearly 40 of you responded to my initial request with thoughtful comments that will help guide us in the coming years. If you have not yet had a chance to submit your comments, please see the home page "NEWS" tab on our website (far left). After you click the link, please respond to these two questions: (1) By the time your son/daughter leaves Langley High school, what do you want them to be prepared to do? (2) In what way do you want Langley High to distinguish itself from other schools? Thank you in advance for your participation.
Also, just a quick reminder, May 1 was our LAST late start Wednesday of the year. School will begin at 7:20 am on May 8.
~ Matt Ragone, Principal

RFL a huge success
|

Over 370 Langley students, parents, teachers, and community members gathered on the Langley football field on Saturday for the much-awaited Relay For Life of Langley-McLean. Twenty-five dedicated teams helped raise nearly $57,000 for the American Cancer Society in their fight against cancer. After sunset, local cancer survivors joined the students gathered on the track for the Luminaria Ceremony, when the word "Hope" was spelled out on the visitor's bleachers, and later the word "Cure" to remind everyone at the event why they were walking. Teams set up tents at their campsites and took turns walking around the track all night, symbolizing the fact that cancer never sleeps.

Want to donate to help Relay For Life of Langley-McLean? You can still make a donation at www.relayforlife.org/langleymcleanva. They're hoping to reach $60,000 in donations, twice the original goal of $30,000.
Special recognition should go to Rosie Mahoney and Zach Dailey as co-chairs for this year, to Harris LaTeef and Ava Shomacher, who will be co-chairs next year. Big thanks to our staff partner, Hannah Hurlburt, for all her help, and Shari True, our American Cancer Society partner.
