principal's message

Dear Langley Community,

I love spring. However, as the weather gets warmer, several things tend to happen in high schools when Spring Fever hits: unsafe driving increases, clothing gets less appropriate, and attendance drops. Now is a good time to talk with your teens about safe driving and appropriate clothing, as we will also be talking with students about these things. The Alcohol Awareness Program today and Friday covers the topic of safe driving in addition to educating students about the dangers of alcohol and drug use.

Attendance is a more difficult problem that seems to get worse as the year progresses. As I walk around school, I see meaningful things happening. Just in my walk-throughs today, I saw Chemistry students learning the impact of salt on temperature (think ice-cream making); Biology students learning about bacterial growth; Japanese students doing a compare-and-contrast essay on their laptops (no idea what topic because it was in Japanese); and Pre-calculus students figuring out shortcuts to summation and series formulas. These learning experiences will continue every period until June 18. I hope every student will be here to experience and engage in the meaningful, substantive learning at Langley, so they can get the most out of their spring.

vote for a langley humanitarian!

Langley's own Jason Cui has been named a finalist for a $10,000 scholarship. You can help him win!

Montage Hotels & Resorts announced 10 finalists in a contest to select the final five recipients who will each receive a $10,000 college scholarship. The finalists, young humanitarians between the ages of 13 - 17, were selected by leaders in philanthropy, based on their merits of community service, impact of achievement on the community and beyond, creativity of achievement, and inspirational value to others.

Jason is being honored for Youth Inspire, which he created when he realized that hospital patients lacked peer interaction and emotional support. His effort has now grown into a global enterprise which has benefited teens in 10 countries.
