sophomores
Our class needs photographers and photos! We want every student and every activity of Langley life for the Class of 2015 represented in our Senior Video. If your child participates in a particular event, such as chorus, band, theater, or sports, please submit your photos to our Special Moments Committee at this email: <lhs2015photos@gmail.com>.
The committee only compiles pictures of students you send--the committee does not take them! Please submit photos that contain more than one student and only pictures with students in our class will be accepted.
And don't forget that the last
driver's education course
offered at Langley is March 13 at 7pm in the Auditorium if you haven't attended this course yet--this is a mandatory course for sophomores and their parent.
juniors
Thank you to Annelle Johnson for agreeing to chair the 2014 All Night Grad Party! Over the coming months, the junior class will have many committees to fill to ensure that this senior tradition is a huge success for our students. If you would like to be a part of the ANGP committee, please look on the PTSA webpage to see if the form has been posted there yet.

supreme court simulation
| |
Langley's annual Case Day is coming up. Senior AP Government students will argue each side of the case before a panel of "justices" to simulate a real Supreme Court trial. This year's case is Arizona v. Inter Tribal Council, which considers whether or not an Arizona voting law is preempted by national voting regulations. All are welcome to attend a day filled with trial, debates, speeches, and entertainment on Fri, March 15. Contact Blair Purdy <blair.purdy36@gmail.com>.

student services notes
| |
A newly updated Student Services website is accessed from the LHS homepage: http://www.fcps.edu/LangleyHS/student_services.html.
graduation cord: Please check under the LHS Student Services website under the Service Learning tab. We have recently updated the service-learning information and forms. Note that students must volunteer 10 hours per high-school year to receive the graduation cord. Current seniors (Class of 2013) must have their completed applications to their counselor by May 31 in order to earn the service-learning graduation cord.
civics seal: Please check under the Student Services website under Senior Class tab and then click on "Civics Seal Application." We have recently updated the civics seal information and application. Current seniors (Class of 2013) must have their completed applications to their counselor by May 31st in order to earn the civics seal for 50+ hours of service learning.
classes for 2013-14: Counselors are busy registering students for the 2013-14 school year. Please talk to your child about their course selections, and remember their registration form is due by Fri, Mar 15.
cpp: Applications are due for College Partnership Program (CPP) by Fri, Mar 15. The primary goal of the CPP is to increase the number of students, particularly first-generation and minority students, to enroll and succeed in college. Contact Ms. Hurlburt in the Career Center for an application.
junior meetings: Juniors and their families are welcome to meet with their school counselor to discuss post-secondary options and plans. Counselors have set aside the month of April for these optional meetings for those families who are new to the college application process and might have lots of questions. Please contact the counselor directly to schedule a meeting. Unfortunately, because of course registration, testing, and graduation, the month of April is the only time that counselors will have the opportunity to schedule these type of meetings.
mentors & mentees: The M & M program was a huge success this year. Upperclassmen exhibited positive leadership skills throughout the year mentoring their freshman peers. Freshmen enjoyed the ability to have someone to go in times of need and confusion. In honor of all these hard-working students, we are hosting a M & M Field Day on Fri, March 22. I would like to provide them lunch. I could use some help! So I am asking the Langley community for two things: 1) parent volunteers for Fri, March 22 from 9 am-1 pm, and 2) donations of individually wrapped chips, canned sodas, and individually wrapped sweat treats. Please email Sonya Williams at < with questions.

senior ethics help
|
Thanks to the ongoing generosity of Gannett/USA Today, the Senior Forum will be held at Gannett headquarters in McLean on Wed, May 22. The Class of 2013, the PTSA, and other community organizations join Gannett in sponsoring this event in which all seniors participate. Seniors rotate through four modules where an ethical dilemma is presented, followed by small or large group discussions. We need table leaders to work with groups of eight students to facilitate small group discussion and to help students rotate through the modules. Senior parents, teachers, and school staff do not serve in this capacity, so we need parents of underclassmen to serve as table leaders each year. The time commitment includes a brief evening training session on Tue, May 14, in addition to the forum at Gannett on May 22, 7:45 am-2 pm. Contact Beth Eames <eames.family@verizon.net> if you can volunteer. Don't miss the opportunity to participate in this important program!

Ice Hockey Team competed in the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League (NVSHL) championship playoffs last week. Led by Seniors Evan Sterling (Captain), Kevin Diner (Assistant Captain), Logan Pontell (Assistant Captain), Peter Nam, Derick Paxton, and Zach Shames, the Saxon team for the first time had an undefeated 10-0 regular season. On Feb 25, Langley beat McLean 10-1 in the quarterfinals and, on Feb 27, LHS faced a tough Woodbridge team in the semifinal, winning 5-1. The Saxons progressed to play Briar Woods in the NVSHL championship game on March 1 at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. In spite of goals from Jeremy Kim and Drew Schneider, and some very tough defensive play, Briar Woods came out on top. At the game, Evan Sterling was named a First Team NVSHL All Star. Saxons receiving the 2012-2013 NVSHL All-Academic Awards were Will Clemson, Kal Fernlund, Jason Guidi, Ryan Guidi, Jeremy Kim, Logan Pontell, Drew Schneider, and Zach Shames. The spring hockey season begins March 18.

Thank you to the parents who started the day early with the Principal/PTSA Coffee last month at 7:30 am. We had a great turnout and will definitely continue to hold early morning coffees. The next Principal/PTSA Coffee is Wed, March 20 at 9:15 am in Auditorium. Also, please note that the April Principal/PTSA Coffee will be held on April 24 at 7:00 pm (note time--again, we are trying to accommodate the schedules of ALL our Langley parents.)
Read all about it! The spring LHS Parent-Teacher Book Club will meet on Thu, April 4, 11:30-12:30 pm in the Principal's Conference Room (across from the Main Office) to discuss How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character by Paul Tough.
One review stated, "The story we usually tell about childhood and success is the one about intelligence: Success comes to those who score highest on tests, from preschool admissions to SATs. But in
How Children Succeed, Paul Tough argues that the qualities that matter most have more to do with character: skills like perseverance, curiosity, conscientiousness, optimism, and self-control."
So, parents and teachers, bring your own lunch (drinks and dessert provided) for this informal but lively conversation. RSVP to Julie Hohl <jbzhohl@verizon.net>.
The PTSA Family Network Committee is looking for volunteers to help with the spring Alcohol Awareness Program on April 18 and 19. Volunteer slots are from 7:00-11:00 am, and 11:00-2:15 pm. All juniors and seniors will get a chance to experience some effects of impairment by wearing impaired-vision goggles and performing simple and complex tasks. We did this two years ago, and it was a big success. This is a fun opportunity to interact with the students while helping them understand the very real dangers of underage drinking. Questions and RSVP, please contact Betsy Shomaker at < shomaker.jb@verizon.net>.
Come join the excitement of Relay for Life and help raise funds for the American Cancer Society. This is an opportunity to celebrate those who have battled cancer, remember lost loved ones, and fight back against the disease. The PTSA is creating a team to walk and support the community efforts of the Langley-McLean Relay for Life. Any member of the PTSA is welcome to join us. We will walk at Langley on Sat, Apr 27 at 6 pm - Sun, Apr 28 at 6 am. You don't have to stay all 12 hours, but just sign up for a shift to walk. Contact Betsy Shomaker, LHS PTSA President, < shomaker.jb@verizon.net>, if you would like to join our team.

principal's message
| |
Dear Langley Families,
I continue to be overwhelmed by the generosity of our students and their families. Whenever this school and community sees a deficiency or recognizes an opportunity to serve, they act. I would like to highlight two examples among the many:
★Donations to the PTSA for technology and classroom resources
★Langley's Crew Team donation to Stop Hunger Now
These two examples represent the countless other generosities made by our students and families.
In the case of the PTSA, it represents just how much you can do to directly impact the academic lives of students. The Crew's donation to Stop Hunger Now represents how one team or club can contribute to a large, worldwide effort. For years, you all have contributed time, money, and moral support. Whether it be hundreds or thousands of dollars or pocket change, whether it is through a systemic and organized effort, or whether it was a spur of the moment decision, it works for the beneficiaries as well as for the students and families who volunteer. Thanks for all you do.
And we aren't stopping there. Upcoming events include THON on March 9 benefitting the Joe Cassella Foundation, and Relay for Life on April 27 benefitting the American Cancer Society. These events are completely student-run. They won't just change the lives of the beneficiaries, they will also positively impact our students. Our students will learn the joy and value of service to community, a commitment that will extend to their college communities and beyond.
Finally, congratulations to some recent academic team winners:
★Model UN - Best Large Delegation at TJ Conference
★Science Bowl - 2nd in the State (TJ won first). Highest finish ever for this extraordinary team.
★Olympiad - 2nd at Regional. Good luck at States on April 27. ★ It's Academic - Winner of 1st TV round. Round 2 will be taped on April 6 at NBC studios - all are welcome!
Many thanks,
Matt Ragone, Principal
