news from student services

planning to visit colleges?: Sonja Williams suggests you read this article first, brought to you by the always-helpful column of

And while you're on the Washington Post site, there's also an interesting Mathews article about Dartmouth College's recent decision not to accept AP scores for college credit:

classes for 2013-14: Counselors are busy registering students for the 2013-14 school year. Please talk to your child about their course selections and return their registration form by Fri, Mar 15.

Applications are due for College Partnership Program (CPP) by Fri, Mar 15. The primary goal of the CPP is to increase the number of students, particularly first generation and minority students, that enroll and succeed in college. If you are interested in having your student participate, please contact Ms. Hurlburt in the Career Center for an application.

ptsa notes
Read all about it!  The spring LHS Parent-Teacher Book Club will meet on Thu, Apr 4, 11:30-12:30 pm in the Principal Conference Room (across from the Main Office) to discuss  How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character by Paul Tough. One review stated, "The story we usually tell about childhood and success is the one about intelligence: Success comes to those who score highest on tests, from preschool admissions to SATs. But in How Children Succeed, Paul Tough argues that the qualities that matter most have more to do with character: skills like perseverance, curiosity, conscientiousness, optimism, and self-control." So, parents and teachers bring your own lunch (drinks and dessert provided) for this informal but lively conversation.  RSVP to Julie Hohl <jbzhohl@verizon.net>.

Many thanks to the wonderful PTSA Hospitality Committee for the delicious staff luncheon last Friday. The lunch from Maggiano's was the perfect complement to a cold and rainy day! Many thanks to the committee, including Ann Goettman, Janie Jackson, Aradhana Luthra, Kiersten Allen, Mary Zarella, Paula van Gorder, Karen Ehrensaal and Gwen Rosener.

performing arts
district XII orchestra assessment:
Langley Orchestra will perform before judges who will rate them against state standards for excellence, on Sat, Mar 2, at Chantilly HS. Freshman Orchestra students should arrive at 9:15 am to perform at 10:30 am; Chamber/Philharmonic students should arrive at 4 pm, to perform at 5:30 pm. Parents and friends are invited to come support the orchestra.

italian concert: Congratulations to students in the five Langley orchestras and two Cooper orchestras for their Feb 26 performance of Italian music. Composer Paul Li performed on piano with violin soloists Michelle Chu and Kevin Tan. Other soloists included pianists George Prestoy, Theron Masters, Chigiya Sakai, and Christie Goddard, oboe. Musical selections were introduced in Latin and English by Dr. Tannenbaum's Latin 3 students Madeleine Chalk, Diana Handler, Na He Jeon, Ben Kenna, Sabrina Lamont, Pallavi Prayaga, and Hayley Wenk. Speaking in her native Italian, Alexa Tavassoli opened the concert with the introduction she gave in the orchestra's recent concerts in Italy. Dr. Scott McCormick and Ms. Bo-Min Son could not have put on the concert without Alex Swann and his technical crew, and the work of the Tri-M students, led by Skye Toor and Alexandra Fraley.

The orchestral music reminded students and chaperones of their wonderful trip to Rome. A recent article appeared in the Connection newspapers: http://langleyorchestra.org/Orchestra%20Forms/Winter%20Rome%20Trip/Great%20Falls%20Connection%20RomeTrip20Feb2013.pdf

William Rau created a terrific slide show of images from the Rome trip, presented with the technical expertise of Alex Swann.  Julie Hohl and her team of volunteers organized a delicious pre-concert Italian dinner, attended by students and families. Appreciation goes to Becky Corcoran for the concert program, Diane Hara for the Rome trip blog and website, and the leaders of the Rome trip, Lien-Rung Kao and Greg Pennington. Thanks to Rob Silverman, Therese Morin and all the parent and student volunteers who made this concert happen.

band: The Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony under the conductorship of Doug Martin put on a great performance at last week's Pre-Assessment Pyramid Concert. Both bands are clearly well prepared for next month's band assessment.

Congratulations to the six Langley band students who auditioned for the All-Virginia Bands and Orchestra this past weekend. Ellen Barker and Katie Moody were each named third alternate for their instruments; Leah Surratt was placed in the Concert Band; Tyler Cunningham was placed in the Symphonic Band; Cliff Crawford was placed in the Orchestra; and Laura Grems got first chair percussion for the entire state.

chorus: The Langley Choral Department will present their annual Pre-Assessment Concert on Tue, Mar 5 at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium. All are welcome to attend this free concert where all of our choirs-Select Women, Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, Madrigals and Voicemale-will sing selections that they have prepared for their upcoming District XII Choral Assessment on Fri, Mar 8 at South Lakes HS. For choral assessment, each choir performs a warm-up piece and two adjudicated selections before a panel of judges.

relay for life update: Tired of the garage band practicing at your house? If your Langley student is in a band or sings, encourage them to perform at Langley's Relay For Life on Apr 27. Have them message Ava Shomaker on Facebook or email her at <shomaker.ava@gmail.com>. Additional information will be provided upon contact. Space is limited so hurry!
breakfast on the go

Coming soon to Langley! In the main lobby, breakfast (bagels, yogurt, & fruit) will be available before school each day from 6:50-7:10 am. Look for more news in the coming weeks. Breakfast: the most important meal of the day.

And remind your students to take advantage of the new salad bar in the cafeteria, because, really, kids cannot live by chicken tenders alone.

last driver's ed parent/child event

The final mandatory Driver's Education Program offered at Langley that you and your child must attend for him/her to complete the in-class driver education program will be on Wed, Mar 13 at 7 pm in the Auditorium. Doors will be locked and no one admitted after 7 pm so arrive early! These are offered at all local high schools if you cannot attend this last one at Langley.
