sophomores
Our class needs photographers and photos! We want every student and every activity of Langley life represented in our Senior video. If your child participates in a particular event such as chorus, band, theater or sports, please submit your photos to our Special Moments Committee at <lhs2015photos@gmail.com>. The committee only compiles pictures of students you send, they do not take them! ◆ Keep in touch with info pertaining to the Class of 2015 by subscribing to our Google Group email account. If you are not receiving our email blasts, please email us at <lhs2014@googlegroups.com> and we will send you a link to join. Or you can contact Vickie Trunnell at <trunnell11@gmail.com>.

from the principal

Dear Langley Pyramid Families:
Since the beginning of this school year I have written and talked about the need to obtain community input on what kind of school Langley High School should be. Today we launched a method to solicit your feedback and we hope you will take some time to contribute to the conversation.
To participate, visit our main webpage at www.fcps.edu/LangleyHS/. The first item under news is a special link to my email, instructions, and the two questions I am asking the community to consider.
In order to best organize your important feedback, it is vital that you respond through the above mentioned webpage link. Please do not email me directly on this topic.
For years Langley High School has operated under the assumption that we know what the community wants for its students. And yet, since I have been Principal here, we have never asked. This is your opportunity to let us know if we are on the right track.
I encourage you to give the two questions posted on the website considerable thought before you reply. The email link will be available from now until May 2013. So, take your time. Also, while your responses will not be received anonymously, I will only share out broad consensus data. None of your personal thoughts will be made public.
I look forward to hearing what you have to say. Thank you in advance for your participation.
Sincerely,
Matt Ragone, Principal

The students did really well at the Model UN Conference in Philadelphia, especially considering the competition at this conference. They won a number of awards, and (most importantly) beat TJ! Many thanks to Vince Worthington, who accompanied the group as a faculty advisor.
Langley placed 3rd place overall. By placing third, we continued our streak over Thomas Jefferson and beat Model UN Powerhouses, West Windsor-Plainsboro South and North and Gulf Coast.

candygrams
| |
Valentine's Day is next week! But you still have time to order candy- grams, so your "sweethearts" receive a special treat during their first block class on Feb 14! Candygrams are only $3.00. Choose between a bag full of tasty chocolate treats or tasty fruity treats or maybe one of each! Don't forget to treat your other sweethearts--carpool buddies, team captains, reliable babysitter, favorite teacher or counselor. Your treat can be from Mom & Dad, the family pet, or even anonymous. (Our hard-working junior class officers will look up the recipient's first block class if necessary.) You may mail or drop off the order form (found on the PTSA webpage under "Langley Marketplace") in the Main Office with a check payable to "Class of 2014." Candygrams will also be sold in the cafeteria during lunch this week on Thursday and Friday and next week on Monday and Tuesday, so the students can recognize their friends, as well. Thanks for supporting the Junior class!

thon is back
|
Langley's leadership class is sponsoring the 2nd annual 8-hour dance marathon called THON on Sat, Mar 9. The THON event goal is to raise $5000 and awareness for The Joe Cassella Foundation, which has supported the Langley community time and time again (raising money for Peter Choo, Nick Cafferky, and Gianna Hess), and we think it's time for us to give back to them.
Sports teams, clubs, honor societies, or individual groups can elect at least one representative from their team to "stand up" for the cause by not sitting down at all from noon to 8 pm. If one person is not able to stand for the full 8 hours, then team members can stand in shifts (minimum of 1 hour) as long as they have someone present, and standing at all times. THON will have food, prizes, and activities, such as zumba, yoga, video games, and more to keep the dancers and their teammates entertained!
For more info, visit http://www.joecassellafoundation.org/thon.php. The interest meeting is Tue, Feb 12 at 2:30 pm in room 225. In addition to each dancer raising at least $50, there will be a $5 admission fee for non-dancers to enter the event. T-shirts will be sold at all lunches in the coming weeks. Our Facebook event is called "Langley Thon 2013" and our Twitter handle is @LangleyThon2013.

relay for life
|
The Relay for Life of Langley-McLean is a community event that raises funds for the American Cancer Society and creates an opportunity to celebrate those who have battled cancer, remember lost loved ones, and fight back against the disease. The 2013 Relay will take place at Langley on Sat, Apr 27 at 6 pm through Sun, Apr 28 at 6 am.
This is your opportunity to not only honor cancer survivors and remember people we have lost, but also to raise funds and awareness to help save lives. Because of your support, we are creating a world where cancer can't claim another year of anyone's life. You are helping create a world with less cancer and more birthdays! Register as a team or individual today and walk!

Orchestra students enjoyed visiting the classrooms and interacting with the students. The second concert was the beginning of a music festival. book club & book drive
|
Mark your calendars! The spring LHS Parent-Teacher Book Club will meet on Thu, Apr 4, 11:30-12:30 pm in the Principal Conference Room (across from the Main Office) to discuss How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character by Paul Tough. One review stated, "The story we usually tell about childhood and success is the one about intelligence: success comes to those who score highest on tests, from preschool admissions to SATs. But in How Children Succeed, Paul Tough argues that the qualities that matter most have more to do with character: skills like perseverance, curiosity, conscientiousness, optimism, and self-control." So, parents and teachers bring your own lunch (drinks and dessert provided) for this informal but lively conversation. RSVP if you can attend to Julie Hohl <jbzhohl@verizon.net>.
The English Honor Society is holding a Book Drive from Feb 11 through Feb 22. Donation boxes will be available in English classes and the Main Office. Go to www.booksforamerica.org for more information.
