curriculum news
curriculum night: Note that curriculum night begins at 6:30 pm (earlier time) on Jan 30. To help students and families make the best decisions about courses for the 2013-14 school year, Langley is hosting this Curriculum Night. The program will begin in the Auditorium followed by breakout sessions. The evening is primarily targeted for parents; however, students are welcome to attend.

know your departments: The PTSA Curriculum and Education (C&E) Committee is pleased to announce the next three Subject Series, which will all be held in the Auditorium:

Science:  Mon, Feb 4 at 9:45am

Math:      Fri, Feb 22 at 9:45am

English:  Thu, Mar 7 at 7am

The Subject Series is where parents will have the opportunity to meet with the Department Chair and Assistant Principal about a core subject. The purpose of the series is to familiarize parents with required and elective course options, present current issues and successes, and have a forum for questions and discussion of relevant topics. The agenda includes a short presentation with the majority of the time for parents to get their thoughts, questions, and concerns addressed.

Almost 100 parents attended the first session. These sessions are designed to provide invaluable insight into what's going on in each department this year. Notes will be posted on the LHS Website after each session. For additional information, contact the C&E Committee chairs: Ellyn Krause-Pontell <krausepontell@cox.net> or Susan Stewart <ssstew@aol.com>.
community service

cord and seal: High-school students who accumulate the required service hours will be recognized by wearing a service learning cord at graduation (10+ hours for every high-school year, totaling at least 40 hours) or by getting a Virginia diploma seal of excellence in civics (50+ hours throughout high school). To get the civics seal, students must also earn at least a "B" in history and government courses and have good attendance. Applications are due senior year the end of May and are available on the Langley website, the student's government blackboard site, or as a hard copy from the teacher.

internship hosts needed: The Langley Leap program needs your help. Hannah Hurlburt, LHS Career Center Specialist, is developing a list of businesses and organizations willing to host an interested Langley senior for an internship from approximately May 23-June 6. This experience benefits seniors in numerous ways, such as exploring a possible area of interest in college, providing a tangible experience of putting academic interests in action in a non-academic setting, and allowing students to work in the "real world." Please contact Hannah Hurlburt at <hwhurlburt@fcps.edu> if you can host a Langley senior.

junior night: There was a huge turnout for Junior Night on Jan 17, and a recording of the presentation will be posted on the LHS website soon. April is the best month to meet with a counselor (if necessary). ◆ If students want to complete a college search, they are encouraged to schedule an appointment with Ms. Hurlburt in the Career Center. Juniors and their families will receive more information about the college application process in the coming weeks. Information is also on LHS website at this webpage: http://www.fcps.edu/LangleyHS/assets/2012-2013/Junior%20Handbook%20-%20Class%20of%202014.pdf
