getting the most from "touching bases"

The next Principal/PTSA Coffee will be Jan 30 at 9:15 am in the Auditorium. There is a packed agenda, including an update on the multiple upcoming school-wide community service events and programs. In anticipation of the upcoming Touching Bases (Feb 15), we will host Vicki Kagan, a former FCPS Director of Student Services. She has pointers on how to get the most out of your three minutes with your child's teacher, how to get the answers you need to hear, and how best to support your child at home.

Please note that the February Principal/PTSA Coffee will be held Feb 27 at 7:30 amThis is a time change from the regular start time; please mark your calendars to join us at 7:30 am.

be part of the "relay for life"

The journey to end cancer starts with a single step. The students of Langley HS and the American Cancer Society invite you to take that step with us: Join the global movement and participate in Langley High School's Relay for Life. During a Relay for Life, which lasts from 6 pm til 6 am the next morning, teams pitch tents on the football field and try to have at least one member of their team walking on the track at all times. Music, games, contests, and activities last throughout the night. When you walk to end cancer at a Relay event, you will honor cancer survivors and remember loved ones lost; raise awareness about what we can do to stay well from cancer; and raise money to help fuel the world's largest walk to end cancer.

Langley's Relay for Life will be held April 27-28 at Langley High School. You can form a Relay for Life team or join an existing one at www.relayforlife.org/langleymcleanva. Have any questions about Langley's Relay for Life? Email Harris LaTeef at <Relaylangleyva@gmail.com>.

community news and events

Del Barbara Comstock (R-34) will be hosting a townhall meeting Sat, Jan 19 at 9:30 am at the McLean Community Center. The primary focus of the townhall will be a discussion of class-size issues. Del Comstock's bill, HB 1556, aims to reduce average class sizes by requiring school size to be based by school and not by county. Currently, class size is calculated at a county level. Among additional topics to be discussed are bills that relate to Fairfax and Loudoun County's school start date and in-state enrollment in Virginia's public higher education institutions.

Forestville ES will host a Used Sports Equipment Consignment Sale. Families can register to consign their sports equipment, they (or their children who need community service hours) can register to volunteer, and they can come to buy equipment for their child's upcoming sports season. The event will take place at Forestville ES, 1085 Utterback Store Rd, Great Falls, on Feb 23 from 8:30 am to 3:45 pm. More details are available at the website, www.forestvillepta.org.
