Though it seems ages away, it's time to start planning the 2014 Junior/Senior Prom! The students and parents of the Junior class are responsible for putting on an unforgettable gala event for the upperclass Saxons, and next year is our year. Please consider signing up to volunteer your time and efforts to help make this event a success. We offer a special welcome and encouragement to new parent volunteers. We'd love your fresh perspectives!

Volunteers will be needed both ahead of time and the day of the event. Our first order of business will be selecting a venue, which needs to be done before Feb 1, 2013. If you are interested in helping, please contact Jennifer Bonafide, Class Sponsor, at <JMBonafide@fcps.edu> or Kristin Bonacci at <KritterT33@aol.com>.

Are you receiving our Google Group emails with important class and school information? If not, email <lhs2015@googlegroups.com> to subscribe.

principal's message: teen survey & computers

Dear Langley High School Community,

I have highlighted a few items, and be sure to check the Langley website for the latest updates.

First, a recap from the meetings about the youth surveys that Fairfax County does every year of 10th and 12th graders to assess their perceptions on healthy living. The Langley Pyramid has made great progress, as the numbers of these teens reporting drinking, binge drinking, and marijuana use have declined sharply. The more "assets" students have -- i.e., an adult to talk to, extracurricular opportunities, a safe school -- the less likely they are to engage in unhealthy behaviors. We still have 1 in 5 teens reporting such use, so we will continue to work with community groups, such as Family Network and Safe Community Coalition to bring these awareness programs to our community. Of course, the best way to address this issue is for parents to reinforce positive behaviors at home. Did you know that 82% of 12th graders and 89% of 10th graders reported NO marijuana use in the last 30 days? Or, 78% of 12th graders and 86% of 10th graders reported NO binge drinking in the past 2 weeks? So, when your teenager tells you "everybody does it" or "if I don't drink, then I'll never be able to go out," you can tell them, "No. Most teenagers DON'T drink or smoke marijuana."  Of course, we still have work to do, and when we work together as a community, good things happen.

Second, Langley has received approval from FCPS to conduct an all staff training for Collaborative Teaming. This staff development is the last step in a series of professional trainings. So, mark your calendars now, as students will have a half day on Jan 15.

Third, to address the issue of computer availability during Saxon Time and after school, we are announcing to students this week a list of classrooms where computers are available for academic use. Also, we are happy to announce our Computer Lab, Room 195, will now be open every day after school with a teacher monitoring from 2:30-4pm for any student who wishes to use a computer for academic purposes.

Last, as winter break approaches, I want you all to know that I continue to expect from my faculty that "a break is a break." Students should expect about the same amount of homework, as they would get for a weekend, not an entire week. In keeping with that philosophy, the LHS Main Office will close for Winter Break at 2:30pm, Fri, Dec 21 and reopen Wed, Jan 2 at 7am. I hope you all will be able to enjoy the time with your families.

Take care, Matt Ragone, Principal

ptsa news:  jan 30 coffee & kudos

january coffee: The next Principal/PTSA Coffee will be Wed, Jan 30 at 9:15am in the AuditoriumOn behalf of the PTSA, we hope you have a very relaxing holiday season. Enjoy your Winter Break, Dec 24-Jan 2!! Don't forget, when school resumes on Jan 2, it will be a green (odd) day.

langley stocking: The PTSA needs about $29,000 more to fulfill all the technology requests. In the fall, the teachers were so excited to receive cutting-edge technology, that now the other teachers and departments see that the new PTSA appropriations process really brings results--not to mention that the administration and FCPS have provided some of this technology, too, after seeing the fall donations from Langley parents. Current technology requests are from Library, Science & Physics, World Languages, Humanities, Fine Arts, and Athletics. So if you've got a little something extra to put towards technology for our students, it would be wonderful to receive your year-end charitable contribution. Contact Ally Weingast, Appropriations Chair, <ptsalangley@gmail.com> to donate.

ptsa kudos:
Many thanks to the Directory Committee (Diane Diner, Barb Long, and Julie Casso). The directories were sent home with students through their 7th block classes. If you did not get one, directories are available in the Main Office for $5. The Directory is also available as an app on smart phones, tablet, or computer by visiting http://www.atozdirectories.com/.

Many thanks to the Hospitality Committee for the lovely breakfast they provided for the LHS faculty the morning of Touching Bases. What a lovely way for the teachers to start their day!

And, last but certainly not least, many, many thanks to Jason McBeth, LHS school psychologist, and Donna Barnsley, LHS school social worker, for their time and invaluable advice to our Langley parents at the class parent coffees. Jason and Donna are a wonderful resource to students and parents who have questions about stress and mental health. They are in the school virtually everyday working with LHS students, so they are very familiar with life at Langley. Thanks also to the class parents and the PTSA Family Network Committee (Julie Hohl) for making these important conversations possible.
dept. news:  ACT/PSAT scores

test scores: ACT Explore and PSAT score reports and test booklets will be distributed through period 7 classes on Wed, Dec 12.  If the score report has not yet been paid for, you may download the registration form from the LHS website and submit it to the Main Office with a check for $17 made out to "LHS."

know your departments!: The Curriculum and Education (C&E) Committee of the PTSA is excited to sponsor a new initiative at Langley: With "The Subject Series," parents each month will have the opportunity to learn in-depth about a core subject. On Jan 10, 11:30am (location TBD), the History Department will be the focus of the first subject series. Mr. Plunkett, Department Chair, and Ms. Statz, the Asst. Principal who oversees history, will do a short presentation discussing available history courses and electives. They will also discuss topics, such as the differences between AP, Honors, and regular  history classes; and the pros and cons of choosing to link or unlink  history class with English class. There will be ample time for Q&A.

We encourage parents to attend. The sessions will provide invaluable insight into what's going on in each department this year as well as into your student's course selection for next year. For additional information, contact the C&E Committee chairs: Ellyn Krause-Pontell <krausepontell@cox.net> or Susan Stewart <ssstew@aol.com>.

madrigals

orchestra: Congratulations to the orchestra students for "A Musical Journey to Germany" on Dec 11. It was a thrill to hear the orchestras perform with professional musicians from the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of guest conductor Glenn Quader. The orchestra appreciates the grants from the Fairfax Symphony SCORE program and the Langley PTSA, which made this concert possible.  Many thanks to the volunteers and sponsors who helped make the concert and the Silent Auction successful!

honeybaked ham fundraiser: Orchestra is sponsoring a fundraiser with the HoneyBaked Ham Company for the winter holidays.  Delicious HoneyBaked hams, roasted turkeys, assorted side dishes, and cakes are available. Place an order by Wed, Dec 19 and pick up on Fri, Dec 21 from noon-2pm in front of the Auditorium: Honeybaked Order Form. Please contact Greg Pennington <greg.pennington@me.com> with your questions. Thank you for your support.

announcements: lost & found

blackout bullying week: Tomorrow is the last day of this year's Blackout Bullying Week at Langley, and students still have the opportunity to sign an anti-bullying pledge and wear a black wrist band.

lost & found donations: On Dec 21, items remaining in our lost and found, located in the Attendance Office, will be donated to a shelter. Please have your students visit the lost and found in the next few days to see if they can recover any of their lost clothing and items.

community events: college programs & math books

college knowledge: Yorktown High is presenting a program on college entitled, "Spend Less Getting In, Spend Less Staying In: Lessons Learned from Current Freshmen and Parents" on Thu, Jan 3 at 7:30pm in their cafeteria. This program is geared for sophomores, juniors, and their parents/guardians. Panelists include recent grads and parents. Contact Allison Walker <allisonwalker@verizon.net> with any questions.

binge drinking: The Perils of College Drinking program will be shown at McLean High on Jan 17 at 7pm. A few years ago Langley PTSA presented this program, which offers a very powerful message about the dangers of binge drinking. The film contains graphic imagery, but is a must-see for all parents, their college-bound teens, and anyone who is concerned about the dangers of underage and high-risk drinking.

online math books: FCPS is taking steps to respond to concerns raised by parents, students, and teachers about the new online math textbooks. We realize that many hurdles still exist and are working on solutions that will support student learning through the use of online technology. In an effort to resolve the situation immediately, FCPS negotiated with the textbook publishers to order additional printed math textbooks. (Copied directly from FCPS KIT 12/12/12)
