Singin' the Blues

Blue Sapphires, they happen to be our favorite gemstone. We particularly favor the Blue Sapphires of Sri Lanka, a country once known as Ceylon. Why you ask, what's so special about these sapphires? Ceylon Sapphires are known for their rich cornflower blue color.

Sri Lanka doesn't allow sapphire rough to be exported. This is wise on their government's part as this policy keeps valuable jobs in the country. However, most Sri Lankan cutters facet to make the most money, so it stands to reason they are retaining weight as sapphires are purchased by weight. To the practiced eye of Roger Dery while these Sapphires are beautiful in their own right, a tweek here and there will make them sing! And we love to hear Roger Singin' the Blues!

When we travel to Sri Lanka we are able to view a wide selection of sapphires. We're also able to obtain sapphires that haven't been heated or treated in any way. This means the cornflower blue color you see is the way the gem came out of the ground when it was mined in Sri Lanka. The sapphire below is a pleasing, lively, and bright 3.02 ct rectangular cushion.

The unheated blue sapphire below is my personal favorite. It's a crisp and animated 3.02 ct round cornflower blue sapphire that dances in the light.

Dancin' in the light. Singin' the blues!
