Issue 54
September 2015
Greetings,

Respect Life Program 2015-16

Whether it lasts for a brief moment or for a hundred years, each of our lives is a good and perfect gift. At every stage and in every circumstance, we are held in existence by God's love. Our relationships on earth are meant to help us and others grow in perfect love. We are meant to depend on one another, serve each other in humility, and walk together in times of suffering.
An elderly man whose health is quickly deteriorating; an unborn baby girl whose diagnosis indicates she may not live very long; a little boy with Down syndrome; a mother facing terminal cancer-each may have great difficulties and need assistance, but each of their lives is a good and perfect gift.

Bishop Murphy: Year of Mercy and Absolution for Sin of Abortion

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, with great love and care for us all, calls us to experience God's mercy especially during the Jubilee Year of Mercy which begins December 8, 2015.  Meantime he announced yesterday another concrete demonstration of his merciful care.  He grants to all priests, during the Jubilee Year, the special faculty to absolve any woman who has procured an abortion from that sin.  Any woman carrying that burden may seek release from the sin with forgiveness and reconciliation simply by going to a priest, confessing her sin and receiving, in return for her sorrow, the gift of absolution, freeing her definitively through this beautiful sacrament of God's mercy, the sacrament of penance and reconciliation. Cardinal O'Malley: Welcomes Pope's Year of Mercy Plan for Post-Abortion Healing

WASHINGTON-Cardinal Seán P. O'Malley, OFM Cap., archbishop of Boston and chairman of the
Committee on
Pro-Life Activities of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), responded September 1 to Pope Francis' letter allowing all priests worldwide "to absolve of the sin of abortion those who have procured it and who, with contrite heart, seek forgiveness for it."

"Recognizing the seriousness of the sin of abortion and the implications this can have for those involved, Pope Francis is making particular outreach to women, noting that many women were under great pressure and felt that they had no choice," Cardinal O'Malley said.
"For many years in the United States, including in the Archdiocese of Boston, diocesan bishops have granted their priests the faculty to absolve the sin of abortion. As part of the outreach of the Year of Mercy, the Holy Father will now grant all priests worldwide the faculty," Cardinal O'Malley said. Read more

I would now like to say a special word to women who have had an abortion... do not give in to discouragement and do not lose hope...the Father of mercies is ready to give you His forgiveness and His peace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation."

Prayer for the Ministry of Project Rachel

Father, source of healing and forgiveness, we pray for all parents overwhelmed by grief and sorrow at the loss of their son or daughter to abortion:
You never abandon those who hope in you; so we pray that the hearts of those wounded by their abortion might be open to your Divine Mercy that they would know the grace of repentance and so experience the embrace of the Father.
We pray that Jesus, the Good Shepherd,
so rich in love and compassion, may hear the cry and see the tears of each of these mothers and fathers so He may heal their broken hearts and restore them to life.
Give these grieving mothers and fathers the consolation of believing and trusting that her child is now living in the Lord that this may soothe the terror of their soul.
We pray that the Blessed Virgin Mary,
Mother of all tenderness and our Mother,
may strengthen their faith in You.
We ask this through Christ our Lord,
who conquered sin and death,
and who lives with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
 Amen.

    Remembering Who We Are

Like many other American children, I couldn't wait to buy The Lion King* when it was first released on video. Now, years later, there's a particular message in that movie that takes on deeper meaning as I think back on it.
I clearly remember the scene when the spirit of Mufasa tells Simba, his self-exiled son, to remember his identity. (As the deceased king's son, Simba is the rightful king.) This reminder motivates Simba to give up his life of leisure and, like the king he is, walk the more challenging road to which he is called.
Sometimes, we also need reminders of who we are and what we are made for. As baptized Christians, we are sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father. God, who isLove and who loves us beyond comprehension, wants us to live forever with Him in full and perfect love. We were created for this love, and our relationships on earth are meant to help us, and others, grow in this love.

    Growing in Love
Do you think of chastity as "just a bunch of rules" that prevent us from expressing affection? On the contrary, we can discover true love through the practice of chastity, "the successful integration of sexuality within the person and thus the inner unity of man in his bodily and spiritual being" (CCC no. 2337).
Let's break that down. Read More

What does chastity mean to you?  Is it a loss of freedom or is it the gift of authentic love? How you define chastity is how you will see its purpose in your life. Chastity is defined by Webster's dictionary as "the state of not having sex with anyone". In comparison, the USCCB cites the Catechism of the Catholic Church definition as, "chastity means the successful integration of sexuality within the person and thus the inner unity of man in his bodily and spiritual being"[1] (no. 2337). Read More

    Spiritual Adoption Program

The Purpose of the Spiritual Adoption Program is threefold:

    • Encourage parishes, schools and other communities to pray for babies in danger of abortion.
    • Educate adults and children about the development of the pre-born child.
    • Provide mothers in need with assistance at a 'baby shower' of donated baby gifts, or simply celebrate with a 'birthday party' at the conclusion of the program. In some schools a crib was bought with monetary gifts and the children filled a crib with gifts for expectant Mothers.

This is done by encouraging people to "spiritually adopt" an unborn baby, and to follow their baby along the path to being born. read more
