Easter Greetings,
May the love of Jesus Christ our Lord who has sacrificed his own life, so that we may have life and have it in abundance, be ever present in our hearts and minds. May the power of the Holy Spirit renew us and bring us closer to Christ through respect for life and love for one another.
This Holy Easter Season brings us the gift of two new saints, Pope John XXIII, and Pope John Paul II.
Pope Francis guides us to a better understanding through his homily on the celebration of the lives of two great saints, and how each followed Christ in the face of opposition through the power of faith, hope, and love. The papal writings of both St. John XXIII and St.John Paul II continue to help shape and guide the People of God to a deeper understanding of the human person in light of Christ. Bishop Murphy's Easter Letter invites us all to "join our lives to Christ and share in his mission". Together we join in the mission and celebrate the gift of life. Together, always, and especially this month we honor Mary the Blessed Mother and the gift of all mothers whose love and care continue to sustain and guide the lives of us all.
With Peace and the Joy of Hope,
Respect Life

The Canonization Of Pope John XXIII And Pope John Paul II
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Canonizing two recent popes in the presence of his immediate predecessor, Pope Francis praised the new Sts. John XXIII and John Paul II as men of courage and mercy, who responded to challenges of their time by modernizing the Catholic Church in fidelity to its ancient traditions.
"They were priests, bishops and popes of the 20th century," the pope said April 27, in his homily during Mass in St. Peter's Square. "They lived through the tragic events of that century, but they were not overwhelmed by them. For them, God was more powerful." Read More |

Urge the Senate to be Pro-Women, Pro-Life
In January the State Assembly passed Governor Cuomo's ten-point "Women's Equality Act" (A.8070) which includes a dangerous abortion expansion component. The issue now moves to the State Senate where, last year, the members rightly passed nine individual bills benefitting women, but rejected the abortion expansion bill. Take Action

LIFE ISSUES FORUM
An Encouraging Trend
By Deirdre McQuade
Español
A March 2014 Pew Research Center study found that Americans' support for the death penalty for convicted murderers is at its lowest level in three decades. In 1983, there was a significant gap between those in support of capital punishment (78%) and those against (18%). The majority supporting the death penalty has dropped to 55%, with a significant 37% opposing it. This major shift is an encouraging sign that, at least on this issue, society is shifting toward embracing the dignity of human life.
The polls do not probe into why people hold their beliefs or have changed them over time. I would like to think that, among other factors, Pope John Paul II's 1995 encyclical on life issues, Evangelium Vitae (EV/"The Gospel of Life") has played a significant role. In that teaching document the pope invited followers of Christ to be "unconditionally pro-life." Addressing the question of capital punishment, he said: "Modern society has the means of protecting itself without definitively denying criminals the chance to reform" (EV, 27). Read More

The "Rite for the Blessing of a Child in the Womb" was crafted to support parents awaiting the birth of their child, to encourage parish prayers for -- and recognition of -- the precious gift of the child in the womb, and to foster respect for human life within society.
