RESPECT LIFE YOUTH CONTEST

 A Victory for Religious Freedom
 BY BISHOP WILLIAM MURPHY

We in this Diocese are pleased and thankful to God that Judge Brian Cogan of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York has found that the HHS Mandate violates the law as it applies to non-exempt religious organizations including Catholic Health Services of Long Island (CHS). We applaud a decision acknowledging the substantial burden the HHS Mandate and its regulatory scheme places on the free exercise rights of religious organizations - and that there is indeed no compelling governmental interest here that trumps this Constitutionally guaranteed right to free exercise.

Judge Cogan's decision emphatically recognizes that so called non-exempt religious agencies have religious freedom rights that are far more important than the Affordable Care Act's requirement to provide in health insurance plans coverage for contraceptives, abortifacients, and sterilization, as well as counseling as respects these objectionable products and services.

What Is Conscience Protection For?

 By Aaron Matthew Weldon

If you follow commentary on the court battles over religious liberty here in the United States, you will occasionally read statements that refer to a need for "balance" on matters of conscience protection.  The thinking for some seems to be that people of faith, or even simply people of good will, should be able to compromise on their convictions when those convictions don't conform to the expectations of the broader culture.  For example, the ethics committee of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has argued that health care professionals should simply refer patients to other providers for services, such as abortions, to which they morally object.  It's as if they are saying, "Sure, you may feel like abortion is evil, but this is a pluralistic society, so you have to give a little. Nobody's asking you to perform abortions, so just keep quiet and let women make their own choices."

But conscience is not a bargaining chip in a negotiation.

Conscience is not merely a feeling, as if I am acting in good conscience whenever I do what feels good.  Rather, conscience is a means by which one grasps the truth.

Life Matters:
Respect Life Program 2013 - 2014
Our Obligation To Protect
Religious Freedom

Our Nation was founded on the principle that all people are "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights." As the Declaration of Independence explains, these rights are not gifts from a civil government, but inherent and God-given components of our humanity. The Constitution proclaims that the very purpose of government is to "secure the Blessings" of these liberties for "ourselves and our Posterity." Our Catholic Church defends the same conception of freedom, including in religious matters. Like our nation's founding documents, the Church teaches that God gives people their natural rights. And like our Nation's Founders, the Church views religious freedom for all people.

Final thoughts: Marriage as a Sacrament Part 2
The Theology of the Body

S. Elizabeth A. Geraghty, CSJ

A prophet is one who proclaims the mystery of God. Since the body is meant to proclaim the "great mystery" of God's love, marital union is in this way "prophetic".
But we must be careful to distinguish true and false prophets. All questions of sexual morality come down
to one basic question. Is the act an authentic sign of
God's free, total, faithful, fruitful love or is it not?

Natural Family Planning is acceptable not because it is "natural" as opposed to "artificial" but because it is in keeping with the nature of sexual intercourse as a renewal of the couple's wedding vows. There will be no renewal of the Church and of the world without a renewal of marriage and the family.
Understanding God's plan for the body and sexuality plunges us into "the perspective of the whole gospel, of the whole teaching, even more, of the whole mission of Christ."

 The 2013 -2014
Respect Life Program
"Open Your Hearts To Life"

The 2013 - 2014 Respect Life Program features seven new articles on the challenges faced and foundations needed to build a culture of life, this year's title,
"Open your hearts to life!," has been a favorite theme of Pope Francis.
His witness as a faithful advocate of the Gospel of Life is a beautiful gift to the Church, and is of particular importance today in the growing shadow of the culture of death.

Spiritual Adoption
  Program

The Purpose of the Spiritual Adoption Program is threefold:

  • Encourage parishes, schools and other communities to pray for babies in danger of abortion.
  • Educate adults and children about the development of the pre-born child.
  • Provide mothers in need with assistance at a 'baby shower' of donated baby gifts, or simply celebrate with a 'birthday party' at the conclusion of the program. In some schools a crib was bought with monetary gifts and the children filled a crib with gifts for expectant Mothers.

This is done by encouraging people to "spiritually adopt" an unborn baby, and to follow their baby along the path to being born. (Read More)

Post Abortion Ministry
Workshops and Retreats

Many don't realize that post-traumatic stress is the untold story of abortion. There are literally millions of women and men who, too often silently and alone, suffer some of the most serious psychological and spiritual consequences of contemporary society's disregard for the sanctity of human life and the sacredness of human sexuality.

Those who join this caravan of faith find hope and confidence in the fact that regardless of how long their healing takes, regardless of the battles fought, won or lost, they have a community of people to whom they can turn in time of need.

Entering Canaan consists of:
* Beginning the Journey: Monthly Days of Prayer and Healing
* Fighting the Battles: Monthly Gatherings
* The Land of Milk and Honey: Hope and Healing Weekend Retreats

* Celebration: Special Gatherings
