Is Your Car a Lost Cause? Think again.
In 2012 WPR received 106 donated vehicles through Car Talk's Vehicle Donation Service. One of those lucky "clunkers" was Mark Blaskey's Ford Explorer. Here is Mark's story:
"In the end it came down to economics. After what a doctor would call "multiple system failures" I realized it was a goner. I dug it out of the snowbank where it spent the winter. I charged the dead battery and pumped up the low tires. It started. I could smell coolant and the faint whiff of a long-dead mouse. The dash lights did not work. I drove it a few feet and stepped on the brake pedal, which went to the floor. I could see brake fluid squirting from the front left wheel well as I drifted toward my garage.
Fortunately, the late-season snow piles stopped the car short of hitting the wall. I shut it off and then it would not start. Rust showered from the frame whenever I slammed the door and the entire car shimmied just by leaning against it. At that moment I heard the voices of Tom & Ray in my head talking vehicle donations."
