Preventing Pavement Failure by Identifying Thermal Segregation in Hot-Mix Asphalt

Greetings!

Paving contractors have long asked for a tool to keep pavements from failing because of cold spots that form in asphalt mats during the lay-down process. SHRP 2 Project R06C (Using Both Infrared and High-Speed Ground Penetrating Radar for Uniformity Measurements on New HMA Layers) demonstrated how infrared and ground-penetrating radar technologies can be used to detect this thermal segregation in hot-mix asphalt and give contractors the chance to correct it during the paving operation. The Texas A&M Transportation Research Institute, which conducted the research, developed an article and a video about their work in this project. Both can be found on the following page.
