The World at Your Fingertips:

English Language Newspapers

from Across the Globe

 newspaper

Integrating current events is important to curriculum relevancy, and so is including a variety of current events that reflect diversity in backgrounds and perspectives. International English language newspapers offer an opportunity for students to learn how people in other countries view current events and the U.S. They help students see an issue from another point of view, and how the same issue may be treated differently in various parts of the world. They can be integrated into any course that you are teaching to add a global perspective. In this issue we've provided links to international English language newspapers. We also combed through international papers to provide a sampling of articles and op-eds over the last few months.

workshopSelected Articles International Newspapers

Brazil

The upcoming U.S. presidential election will have a large impact on Latin America and Brazil mainly for trade purposes. The Free Trade Agreements between the U.S. and various Latin American countries are pivotal in this election, as is Brazil's rising economic power.

Canada
Why Americans should love Canadian Oil

While gas prices are soaring throughout most of the United States, there are some states (mainly in the Rocky Mountains) that are experiencing lower gas prices than the national average, due to the high amount of Canadian oil exported to those states. Much of the oil consumed in the U.S. comes from Canada, which is an important factor to consider in future debates about oil.

China
Chinese are encouraged by a U.S. business leader's proposal in the Wall Street Journal for a a China-U.S. Free Trade Agreement. They are disturbed, however, by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta's announcement that the U.S. is shifting its military focus eastwards to the Asia-Pacific region. They question why China has been singled out as a potential adversary along with Iran and North Korea.

US Trade Body "Targets" China
President Obama recently established the Interagency Trade Enforcement Center to determine whether trade partners are honoring U.S. trading standards and to enforce measures against non-compliant countries. The U.S. plans to investigate and counter unfair trade practices from all its trading partners but will focus heavily on China.

Europe and Worldwide

Sacre Bleu! US Republican Accuses Rival of Speaking French

While it received scant notice in U.S. papers, when Newt Gingrich accused George Romney of speaking French in January in an attempt to discredit him with Republican voters, the story ran in newspapers all over the world. European writers point out this is not the first time for such accusations, as opponents said John Kerry "looked French" during his campaign against George W. Bush. They also note that Gingrich speaks French as well.

Mexico

Illegal Immigration is a Two-way Street

Illegal immigration is a hotly debated issue in the United States, especially about immigrants coming from Mexico, yet the status of U.S. citizens living or immigrating illegally in Mexico is often ignored. While there are harsh immigration restrictions in the United States, especially on Mexicans, there are little restrictions or penalties for Americans overstaying their legal welcome within Mexico.
