2015

"Being Poised for Growth"

Six years ago, the BID released a Retail Market Action Plan which was our first comprehensive review of existing inventory of properties along 125th Street from river to river. The Plan which incorporated specific recommendations and action items served as a guideline for BID priorities.

At the end of 2014 we realized many aspects of our vision and moving forward in 2015 we recognize that there is a transformation taking place and 125th Street is poised for continued growth.

The Happenings:

There were over 10,330,314 square feet of development activity either in the ground, planned or recently completed in 2014. Streetscape enhancement initiatives have been implemented and others still being planned. There is a surge in the quest for retail, residential and office space which means 125th Street is becoming more attractive to developers and retailers.

The Programs

BID Core programs continue to be Sanitation, Public Safety, Promotion, Real Estate Development Activities and Harlem Holiday Lighting (Click here and view the excitement)Our holiday lighting program continues to grow with greater participation from the community each year.

There is a reduction in crime and the BID has become a member of the Partner Officer Program Community Collaboration with NYPD.The activities of our real estate development committee continue to grow and this year the BID participated in the

International Conference of Shopping Centers in NYC

to promote 125th Street.

We invite you to join us as we continue our connectivity journey and to share our information -- website, newsletter, eblasts, social media pages -- with all those who would benefit.

The long-stalled site at 5 West 125th Street in Harlem is finally seeing some action, as the Aurora Capital Associates' and Adjmi family's 130,000-square-foot retail and rental development made rapid progress in the latter half of 2014. Now up to three stories (Bed Bath & Beyond will lease the second floor; co-working space company "WeWork" will lease the third floor), with another three floors containing 30 rentals to come, the project appears to be on pace for its fall 2015 completion date. Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

January 19, 2015
Martin Luther King Jr. Day

This month we celebrate the life of an influential leader that made major impacts on the lives of all Americans.

Harlem, always in the forefront of recognizing achievements of our leaders, renamed 125th Street Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in 1984.

His messages of peace, love and unity always resonates in America.   In keeping Dr. Kings memory alive, 125th street BID is dedicated to continue to build a working relationship between community residents and businesses.

The message from his famed speech on Washington continues to have a significant impact on this nation.

Update

A few weeks ago, the building on the corner of 125th Street & St. Nicholas began to slightly crumble. Thankfully, no one was injured and in an effort to ensure safety, the building is currently being taken down completely. Once developed, this corner will certainly be another significant change on 125.
