 Did You Know...?

The Community Affairs Bureau would like to draw your attention to a few NYC Parks Rules and Regulations applicable to playgrounds with which the general public may not be aware.

For example, as per section 1-05 "Regulated Uses," an adult is only permitted on a playground when accompanied by a child under the age of twelve (12). Therefore, any adult entering a playground unaccompanied by a child is subject to a summons.

This rule has been implemented in order to foster a safe environment for all visitors by deterring certain crimes.

In June of 1990, Nelson Mandela brought his campaign against apartheid in South Africa to the "heart of Harlem." The 125th Street Business Improvement District is forever grateful that this courageous and iconic figure graced our district with his messages. His words will resonate in the hearts and minds of this community and impact lives on a global scale forever.

"A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination." - Nelson Mandela

Harlem Holiday Lights 2013
The BID took our annual lighting to new levels for the Harlem Holiday Lighting 2013 Celebration. In light of our 2 major milestones; 20 years of BID Operations and the 200th Anniversary of 125th Street, the BID had to do it BIG!

With feature stories in the Amsterdam News and Harlem News Group, as well as coverage on ABC -- Harlem Holiday Lights was a major success. This year's four-part event included: an outdoor festival with both in-store and street activities presented by BID Businesses on 125th Street, a scavenger hunt with supporting host Carver Federal Savings Bank, an outdoor dance party presented by Larry Scott Blackmon, and the first annual Parade of Lights supported by Grayline, the Harlem Tourism Board, Community Board 9, Atlantic Maintenance and McRoberts Security.

Grand Marshall Sandra Bookman of ABC news attended the VIP reception hosted by the Aloft Harlem and rallyed up the crowd to welcome in the holiday season as she stood atop the holiday lit double decker Grayline bus while saying "Harlem Light it Up!"  Gracing Harlemites with great words on the importance of the community, and how there is no other like it, she led the countdown to begin the parade of lights. The parade followed the BID contractors as they turned on the lights from Marginal Street to Fifth Avenue on 125th Street.

Our district was filled with people enjoying the festivities, with one community member even stating "I [have] never seen anything like this in Harlem...Harlem is coming back!"
