Letter from Paul and Moderators

Dear Hancock Friends,

Our building project, which has been slower than any of us would have liked, is nevertheless making real and visible progress. We are increasingly confident that by Christmas, all construction will be substantially completed. We all share in the frustration of not yet having access to all parts of the building. We ask for everyone's continuing patience over the next several months as the completion of this project nears.

This project has been carefully shepherded along by our Building Committee, and especially by Joan Rutila and Lisle Swanson, who have been in the building nearly every day. It is truly not possible for the congregation to express enough thanks to them for their efforts. The project is accomplishing everything that we agreed to do, and we remain within our budget.

Now that renovations become visible, we are struck by the great contrast between the newly improved areas and those left untouched. This is inevitable, and can be addressed only with time and additional funds. Rather than focusing on what is undone, and wishing that it too could be improved, let us marvel at the huge improvements being made. Let us keep our eyes on the prize and give thanks that so much has been done, and to our hard working volunteers and staff, who have worked so steadfastly under trying circumstances. We all look forward to a day in the new year when we will rededicate to the glory of God our beloved and improved church home!

EDUCATION AND FELLOWSHIP

First and Third Thursday Discussion Group

This year the First Thursday Discussion Group will meet twice a month.  So the group will be renamed to the First and Third Thursday Discussion Group.  Our first meeting will be October 2, 2014 at 10 am in the Pearson room.  The book we will be discussing is "God Is Not One:  The Eight Rival Religions That Run The World" by Stephen Prothero. The Hancock library has two copies of the book. The first session will cover at least the intro and chapter one. You don't have to attend all sessions.  Come to as many as you can, even if you have not read the assignment, for a lively discussion.  Contact:  Lois Smith Martin smithmartin224@verizon.net781-270-0304.

In God is Not One: The Eight Rival Religions That Run the World, New York Timesbestselling author of Religious Literacy and religion scholar Stephen Prothero argues that persistent attempts to portray all religions as different paths to the same God overlook the distinct problem that each tradition seeks to solve. Delving into the different problems and solutions that Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, Confucianism, Yoruba Religion, Daoism and Atheism strive to combat, God is Not One is an indispensable guide to the questions human beings have asked for millennia-and to the disparate paths we are taking to answer them today. Readers of Huston Smith and Karen Armstrong will find much to ponder in God is Not One.

New Pearson Room Sessions
2nd, 3rd, 4th Sundays at 11:15am

Listen.  Learn.  Pray.  These three words will shape our congregational life in the year to come.  We urge each person to engage in all three, and your ministers will offer opportunities for doing so.  Join one of us at 11:30 Sunday morning in the Pearson Room:
  • Second Sunday of each month - We'll listen to the hopes and concerns of all who join us
  • Third Sunday of the month - We'll offer a chance to learn more about the work of Hancock and of the United Church of Christ
  • Fourth Sunday of the month - We'll share together the hopes and concerns of our lives and join in prayer together

We invite one and all to join us as we Listen, Learn and Pray.

-Paul, Alex, Pam, Nancy and Andrew

Nancy leads "Learning Sunday" at 11:15 this Sunday in the Pearson Room. Feel free to grab a snack from coffee hour and stop in!
Join Other Hancock Caregivers for a meal after Evening Worship!
Sept 21, 7:15pm

Are you one of the many Hancock members caring for an aging parent, sibling or other loved one? Maybe you've done so in the past or you're thinking that you'll have to in the future? If the meeting time is difficult, we do have an email list that is often used for advice and the sharing of resources. Please let Acting Minister Alex (Alex@HancockChurch.org) know how we can best help you.

SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

Lexington Food Pantry
While we appreciate all of the support we get, we could always use more help on the Saturdays we serve. If you have any questions please contact Scott Griffith at isb.scooter@gmail.com or 509-710-5371.

In addition to monthly work at the pantry, we are in great need of people to deliver food from the church on a roughly weekly basis. We are looking for people who are available Fridays in the early afternoon. If we get enough people, the commitment would only be once a month or every other month.

Food Of the Month for September is Canned Fruit.
Rosie's Place Thank You Note

Thank you, Hancock!

Three boxes of pantry supplies went to Rosie's Place last Sunday because of your generous donations of dried fruit,
brown rice, dried beans, oatmeal, cheerios, rice krispies, raisin bran and granola bars,

Now that Rosie's cannot accept home-made casseroles, our donations of pantry supplies requested by Rosie's will permit the kitchen staff to create meals in the safe-serve kitchen
there and will also support the breakfast program.

Watch for announcements in the Wednesday E-newsletter and the Sunday bulletin about the next pantry collection, and sign up to drive the items to Rosie's (contact Meg Weston
at jrw46@aol.com).
Backpack Drive will run until Sept 21

We're still collecting backpacks and donations! Checks can be payable to Hancock Church, memo "backpacks." All items will be distributed to the Russell School the week of September 1st and 21st. Sponsored by the Christian Service Committee. For more information, please contact Laurie Bergstrom, lbergstrom@rcn.com.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ordination of Courtney Jones
Sunday, September 28th at 3:00 PM

On Sunday, September 28th at 3:00 PM, we'll ordain our own Courtney Jones to christian ministry in the UCC. As many of you know, she has been called as the Associate Minister to Hope Central Church in Jamaica Plain, MA. As part of the ordination, it is traditional for the sponsoring congregation (that's us!) to present the newly ordained with a few gifts. (e.g. study texts, communion-ware, stoles, etc.)

If anyone would like to contribute to the purchasing of a gift, please make your check out to Hancock UCC and write "Courtney's Ordination" in the memo line. Whether you contribute or not, please join us on the 28th at 3PM as we support Courtney in this important and holy day.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Acting Minister Alex Will, Alex@HancockChurch.org.
Come Join the Well Leadership Team!

Alex is looking to put together a leadership team from the congregation. This group will be assisting Alex in planning, evaluating, and promoting The Well.

All that's needed is a willing spirit and a love of worship! Alex will be providing tutorials for all team members! If you'd like to serve on this team or have any questions, please let Alex know. READ MORE HERE.

TV Studio UPDATE

The television ministry is pleased to learn from LexMedia that the audio issues they have had with the cable feed from the church have been addressed.  The problem has been occurring for about a month and we very much appreciate our viewers alerting us to the issue, which is not discernible within the church. Thank you to LexMedia for pursuing it with their provider and thank all of you for your patience and for your viewership.
