Adam Hearlson preaches

The story of "the Canaanite woman" is a parallel to a story in Mark's gospel known as "the Syrophoenician woman." As Mark's gospel is widely considered a source for both Matthew and Luke's gospels, it is highly likely that Matthew's story is a rendition of Mark's. An interesting difference between the two is that Matthew chose to change the ethnicity of the woman, from Syrophoenician to Canaanite. Why might he do this?

SUMMER WORSHIP AT HANCOCK
Sunday, July 13th: Jonathan

If you'd like to "read ahead" for the 13th, Becca Lockwood will be preaching on the story of the Jonathan. His story can be found throughout the book of 1 Samuel. Keep an eye on the next weekly for more information.
A People Like Us: Stories from our Bible
Summer Worship at Hancock

Many churches slow down a bit during the summer in New England - ours included - but we certainly don't stop! Thematically, we'll be exploring a topic we're calling "A People Like Us: Stories from Our Bible."

Limited Access to the Narthex

Our contractor is still in the process of aligning the doors to the narthex with the aisles in the sanctuary. There will be limited access to the sanctuary through the narthex on Sunday. Please consider using one of the two other entrances. One can be found through the backdoor in the parking lot, and the other just past the stone arch portico on the left side of the church. This work will likely take 2 weeks.

As always, there will be ushers at every entrance providing helpful directions and answering questions. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the church office.

SPOTLIGHT

Courtney Jones and Becca Lockwood Receive Wonderful News

We have exciting news for both Becca Lockwood and Courtney Jones!

After her successful Ecclesiastical Council, Becca has been called to serve as Youth Minister at First Parish in Gorham, Maine. She will begin her service in September. Before then, she'll be here at Hancock over the summer. Hear her preach her last sermon on July 13th. Please send her a note of congratulations at: becca@hancockchurch.org

Just two short months after her Ecclesiastical Council, our own Courtney Jones has been called as the first Associate Pastor at Hope Central Church in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts! Won't you reach out to Courtney and congratulate her? Her email is: crjones.boston@gmail.com. We will have a service of ordination for Courtney here at Hancock sometime in September.

If you'd like to offer Courtney a gift in honor of her celebration, one way you can do so is by helping sponsor her trip to the Holy Land! "Participants will explore sites of historical and religious significance, ...and meet with people representing a wide spectrum of political and social thought." If you'd like to support Courtney in this way, you can read more about her trip and donate securely online here: http://www.gofundme.com/9gfy4w?preview=1

Help Lead Summer Worship!
Share Your Musical Talents in Worship This Summer!

If you sing or play an instrument, consider sharing your talents with the congregation in helping lead worship this summer! We are looking for solos, duets, trios, etc. in a variety of genres for preludes, postludes, offertories, etc. for July and August. We would especially encourage middle, high school, and returning college students!

If interested, please contact Mark Morgan, Director of Music, at mark@hancockchurch.org or (781) 862-4220 ext 212.

Flower Donations Needed

The flowers that bloom in the Spring ... the Summer ... the Fall ... and the Winter, on the alter, pulpit or lectern, are placed there to honor and remember the loved ones of the Hancock family. Not only do they add to the glory of the service, but, after church, they are delivered and shared with those especially in need of a visual symbol of our love and caring.

To donate flowers for church, please contact Sally Wyman (
scwyman@gmail.com or 781-861-1929).  -Thank you.

Stewardship 2014 Summary
stewardship2013

Do you remember circling words on a prayer flag in October, processing to the front of the sanctuary on Commitment Sunday in November, or enjoying a juicy pear at the coffee hour celebration that day? Do you remember opening a pledge packet with information about Hancock's financial priorities or filling out your pledge card? Then you remember the Delight in Giving stewardship campaign through which our church family came together to further God's work in the world!

The stewardship team has prepared a summary of our community's amazing generosity of time, talent and treasure. We found some surprises in this year's results and we need your help to understand what they mean for our church family. Please check out the story let us know what you think.
Search Committee Starts Work

The search committee for a new settled minister to replace Dana Allen Walsh has been formed and will hold an introductory meeting with Rev. Wendy Vanderhart of the UCC Boston Metropolitan Association this week. The committee members, appointed by the moderator, are: Skip Irving (chair),  Kristine Arena, Sarah Keeping, Christopher Locher, Linda O'Keefe,  Gwyn Rohrer, and Paul Shupe.

The first months of work will involve completing a church profile designed by the UCC that will then be circulated nationally for interested candidates to respond to. Input from the congregation on the needs of the church is essential and will be solicited during this first phase. Stay tuned!

Are you listening to the
Cordon of Prayer?

Are you someone who calls into the Hancock Cordon of Prayer? If you are, we'd love to hear from you! In an effort to help the congregation feel better connected to one another, we're exploring various models of sharing prayer requests. The model we've used for a number of years, the Cordon of Prayer, is a recorded prayer line. If you're someone who uses it, we'd like to know who you are. Feel free to call the church office or email alex@hancockchurch.org. If you have a suggestion to make in this area, please let us know.
