Nancy Rottman preaches

Special Music by A Joyful Noyse

The second chapter of 1 Samuel begins with the 'Song of Hannah.' Hannah is the mother of the prophet Samuel and we learn in the opening of 1 Samuel that she was barren. Hannah prayed to the Lord and promised that if God would give her a son, she would dedicate him to God's service. Hannah does indeed conceive and bear a son who she names Samuel and after he is weaned she returns to the Temple and gives him over to be a servant of God. As she does so, she sings a song of praise!

SUMMER WORSHIP AT HANCOCK
Sunday, July 6th: The Canaanite Woman

If you'd like to "read ahead" for the 6th, Adam Hearlson, director of Wilson Chapel and professor of preaching at Andover Newton, will be preaching on the story of the Canaanite Woman. Her story can be found in Matthew 15:21-28. Keep an eye on the the next weekly for more information.
A People Like Us: Stories from our Bible
Summer Worship at Hancock

Many churches slow down a bit during the summer in New England - ours included - but we certainly don't stop! Thematically, we'll be exploring a topic we're calling "A People Like Us: Stories from Our Bible."

Limited Access to the Narthex

As our contractor begins the process of aligning the doors to the narthex with the aisles in the sanctuary, our access to the main entrance to the sanctuary will begin to change. While it appears there will be limited access to the sanctuary through the narthex on Sunday, please consider using one of the two other entrances. One can be found through the backdoor in the parking lot, and the other just past the stone arch portico on the left side of the church. This work will likely take 2-3 weeks.

As always, there will be ushers at every entrance providing helpful directions and answering questions. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the church office.

SPOTLIGHT

Tonight!
Hancock Caregivers Group Presents:
A Conversation on "What Comes Next" with estate planner Bill Hays.

Hancock member and long-time estate planner, Bill Hays, has kindly agreed to lead our church community in a conversation around estate planning. Whether you're caring for an again parent or concerned about the care of your own estate, this is a wonderful opportunity to have some of your questions answered and meet others in the congregation who might be in a similar situation. Bill will join us on Tonight (June 25th) at 7:00 PM in the Dining Room.

The Hancock Caregivers group, formerly known as the Sandwich Generation, is a group of Hancock members and friends who meet monthly over a small meal. Most everyone in the group is currently caring for an aging parent or cared for one previously. If you have any questions, please let Alex know.

EDUCATION AND FELLOWSHIP

Summer Pastor's Class

Back by popular demand, the weekly "Pastor's Class" will return for our summer theme. Working in tandem with Alex, Craig Zaehring has stepped up to lead the group in thoughtful conversation. The class will resume on Sunday, June 29th at 9:00 AM in Pearson. This group will continue throughout the summer based on interest from the congregation, so be sure to join us each week for a discussion of that morning's scripture and Biblical character. On the 29th we'll begin our time together exploring the story of Samuel's mother, Hannah.

Share Your Musical Talents in Worship This Summer!

If you sing or play an instrument, consider sharing your talents with the congregation in helping lead worship this summer! We are looking for solos, duets, trios, etc. in a variety of genres for preludes, postludes, offertories, etc. for July and August. We would especially encourage middle, high school, and returning college students!

If interested, please contact Mark Morgan, Director of Music, at mark@hancockchurch.org or (781) 862-4220 ext 212.

Flower Donations Needed

The flowers that bloom in the Spring ... the Summer ... the Fall ... and the Winter, on the alter, pulpit or lectern, are placed there to honor and remember the loved ones of the Hancock family. Not only do they add to the glory of the service, but, after church, they are delivered and shared with those especially in need of a visual symbol of our love and caring.

To donate flowers for church, please contact Sally Wyman (
scwyman@gmail.com or 781-861-1929).  -Thank you.

Stewardship 2014 Summary
stewardship2013

Do you remember circling words on a prayer flag in October, processing to the front of the sanctuary on Commitment Sunday in November, or enjoying a juicy pear at the coffee hour celebration that day? Do you remember opening a pledge packet with information about Hancock's financial priorities or filling out your pledge card? Then you remember the Delight in Giving stewardship campaign through which our church family came together to further God's work in the world!

The stewardship team has prepared a summary of our community's amazing generosity of time, talent and treasure. We found some surprises in this year's results and we need your help to understand what they mean for our church family. Please check out the story let us know what you think.
New Emergency Pastoral Care Number

In the interest of providing the best pastoral care possible, we have registered a phone number that belongs only to Hancock Church.
This number is
This is a free Google service that will forward your call to the cell-phone of whichever member of staff is working that day. If you are worried about whether the number will work, we invite you to give the number a call over the coming weeks during this trial period. If you have any questions or feedback, please do not hesitate to let us know.
Congratulations to Becca Lockwood!

Congratulations to Becca Lockwood for being approved for ordination to be a minister! Last Sunday, she passed her Ecclesiastical Council at Casco Village Church in Casco Maine. Be sure to congratulate her the next time you see her!
While she will be around part-time this summer, her final sermon at Hancock will be on July 13, 2014.
Search Committee Starts Work

The search committee for a new settled minister to replace Dana Allen Walsh has been formed and will hold an introductory meeting with Rev. Wendy Vanderhart of the UCC Boston Metropolitan Association this week. The committee members, appointed by the moderator, are: Skip Irving (chair),  Kristine Arena, Sarah Keeping, Christopher Loker, Linda O'Keefe,  Gwyn Rohrer, and Paul Shupe.

The first months of work will involve completing a church profile designed by the UCC that will then be circulated nationally for interested candidates to respond to. Input from the congregation on the needs of the church is essential and will be solicited during this first phase. Stay tuned!

Amy, Lisle, and Scott in Ft. Wayne

Three Hancock members are in Fort Wayne, Indiana building homes with Blitz Home Builders and Habitat for Humanity. Amy and Lisle Swanson, and Scott Martin are over there right now! Read their blog here:

http://hucc-ft-wayne.blogspot.com/

The local news also covered the work they're doing down there! Apparently Amy and Lisle Swanson make cameos, but you have to look for their light blue hats.

Are you listening to the
Cordon of Prayer?

Are you someone who calls into the Hancock Cordon of Prayer? If you are, we'd love to hear from you! In an effort to help the congregation feel better connected to one another, we're exploring various models of sharing prayer requests. The model we've used for a number of years, the Cordon of Prayer, is a recorded prayer line. If you're someone who uses it, we'd like to know who you are. Feel free to call the church office or email alex@hancockchurch.org. If you have a suggestion to make in this area, please let us know.
New Paraments!

The new green paraments for "Ordinary Time" were designed and made by Joan Rutila and MaryAnn Shupe with the help of the Project Group. The design was inspired by the grate work in the right front of the church covering the organ pipes and the stained glass in the chancel. Individual pieces of fabric were cut and fused to a black background giving it a "stained glass" effect.

Construction Status and Delays

Our construction project is in full swing, and the installation of the elevator is almost ready to begin. The contractor has been working on many other areas of the church as well and some of these (like the CE Wing) are almost complete. Problems in the kitchen related to a subcontractor are being resolved; work there will resume soon and the equipment is ready to install as soon as that is finished.

Work on the Narthex wall and the realigning of the doors with the aisles begins this week.

As we've been told a number of times, and as many of you know from your own home construction projects, it is not if there will be delays in a construction project, but when the delays will be identified. We have found ours! Due to an unforeseen problem with a pier from the 1960 addition as well as some other minor setbacks, our project will take longer to complete than we had hoped. This means that, come September, construction will still be happening at Hancock. Disappointing, surely, but we are committed to finishing the project correctly and doing it well so that our modifications can stand up to the test of time.

We will have a better sense of the project time frame once this pier has been repaired and the elevator installation begins. Be assured that we will keep you up to date as we gain information. Growing pains on the Green - but it's still for the Good!
