IN WORSHIP
Sunday morning worship | 10am

Alex Will preaches

Special Music by the Plasterposaunes Brass Group

(While we'll save the pastoral learnings for the Sunday sermons, I'm hoping to share just a bit of background with you prior to each sermon. My prayer is that these humble pieces of information might pique your intellectual curiosity prior to worship.)

While the Hebrew Flood narrative is the best known account in modern times, Noah is actually one of three ancient Mesopotamian flood "heroes!" The other complete version of the three is known as the Epic of Gilgamesh. This account tells the story of Utnapishtim, a man whose family escapes a world destroying flood after receiving divine warning. This epic parallels our Bible's flood epic in very similar ways.

But what about the story that is in our Bible? Read more on our website.
SUMMER WORSHIP AT HANCOCK
Dear Hancock Friends,

As you read this, I have retreated to Maine to begin a short sabbatical leave, which will have me returning to Hancock on Sunday, August 17.  I have left you in the capable hands of our new Acting Ministers Alex Will and Pam Cochrane, and I have complete confidence in their ministerial abilities.  I am so grateful for the opportunity to rest and to restore.  I'll be in Maine mostly, but in Lexington occasionally, with trips planned to Wisconsin and Colorado later in the summer.  I hope that each of you has a restful summer, too.  See you in August!

Peace,

Paul
Limited Access to the Narthex

As our contractor begins the process of aligning the doors to the narthex with the aisles in the sanctuary, our access to the main entrance to the sanctuary will begin to change. While it appears there will be limited access to the sanctuary through the narthex on Sunday, please consider using one of the two other entrances. One can be found through the backdoor in the parking lot, and the other just past the stone arch portico on the left side of the church. This work will likely take 2-3 weeks.

As always, there will be ushers at every entrance providing helpful directions and answering questions. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the church office.

Pastoral Response from Pam and Alex

"I am filled with your love and care. It is in and through the presence of the Holy Spirit that I walk with you. I have been blessed to serve this community of faith for four years. I have witnessed the work of the Holy Spirit here in our work together. I have witnessed the work of the Holy Spirit in your lives."

Read the entire pastoral response on our website.

A People Like Us: Stories from our Bible
Summer Worship at Hancock

Many churches slow down a bit during the summer in New England - ours included - but we certainly don't stop! Thematically, we'll be exploring a topic we're calling "A People Like Us: Stories from Our Bible."

Sunday, June 29th: Hannah

If you'd like to "read ahead" for the 29th, Nancy Rottman will be preaching on Samuel's mother, Hannah. Her story can be found in the first two chapters of 1 Samuel. Keep an eye on the the next weekly for more information.

SPOTLIGHT

Stewardship 2014 Summary
stewardship2013

Do you remember circling words on a prayer flag in October, processing to the front of the sanctuary on Commitment Sunday in November, or enjoying a juicy pear at the coffee hour celebration that day? Do you remember opening a pledge packet with information about Hancock's financial priorities or filling out your pledge card? Then you remember the Delight in Giving stewardship campaign through which our church family came together to further God's work in the world!

The stewardship team has prepared a summary of our community's amazing generosity of time, talent and treasure. We found some surprises in this year's results and we need your help to understand what they mean for our church family. Please check out the story let us know what you think.

EDUCATION AND FELLOWSHIP

Hancock Caregivers Group Presents:
A Conversation on Estate Planning

Hancock member and long-time estate planner, Bill Hays, has kindly agreed to lead our church community in a conversation around estate planning. Whether you're caring for an again parent or concerned about the care of your own estate, this is a wonderful opportunity to have some of your questions answered and meet others in the congregation who might be in a similar situation. Bill will join us on Wednesday, June 25th at 7:00 PM in the Dining Room.

The Hancock Caregivers group, formerly known as the Sandwich Generation, is a group of Hancock members and friends who meet monthly over a small meal. Most everyone in the group is currently caring for an aging parent or cared for one previously. If you have any questions, please let Alex know.
Summer Pastor's Class

Back by popular demand, the weekly "Pastor's Class" will return for our summer theme. Working in tandem with Alex, Craig Zaehring has stepped up to lead the group in thoughtful conversation. The class will resume on Sunday, June 29th at 9:00 AM in Pearson. This group will continue throughout the summer based on interest from the congregation, so be sure to join us each week for a discussion of that morning's scripture and Biblical character. On the 29th we'll begin our time together exploring the story of Samuel's mother, Hannah.
Looking for Hosts for Hancock Grills!
Hancock Grills

We're looking for hosts for this summer's Hancock Grills! Hancock Grills are a fun evening of bbq and fellowship every Wednesday, starting July 2 until August 20th! Hosts provide a grill, a backyard or deck, paper goods and condiments, as well as beverages (ie, lemonade, water).

Attending participants bring their own meat, fish, or veggies to grill and a dessert or side dish to share! A sign-up sheet will be in the church workroom. You can also contact the church offices or call Lisa Sandeen (781) 424-7937.

SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

Help Lead Summer Worship!
Share Your Musical Talents in Worship This Summer!

If you sing or play an instrument, consider sharing your talents with the congregation in helping lead worship this summer! We are looking for solos, duets, trios, etc. in a variety of genres for preludes, postludes, offertories, etc. for July and August. We would especially encourage middle, high school, and returning college students!

If interested, please contact Mark Morgan, Director of Music, at mark@hancockchurch.org or (781) 862-4220 ext 212.

Help Lead Summer Worship
We need Liturgists!

Have you ever thought about reading scripture during worship, or writing a prayer? The summer at Hancock is a wonderful opportunity to try something new. If you'll be around this summer, and you'd be interested in helping lead worship on Sundays, please let me know. Even if you've never done it before, I'm willing to sit down with you and help you learn a bit more about worship leading. No divinity degree or robe required! Email
Alex.Will@hancockchurch.org if you have any questions or to let me know that you're interested.
Flower Donations Needed

The flowers that bloom in the Spring ... the Summer ... the Fall ... and the Winter, on the alter, pulpit or lectern, are placed there to honor and remember the loved ones of the Hancock family. Not only do they add to the glory of the service, but, after church, they are delivered and shared with those especially in need of a visual symbol of our love and caring. To donate flowers for church, please contact Sally Wyman (
scwyman@gmail.com or 781-861-1929).
Thank you.

Interfaith Garden
Volunteer Opportunities

A garden stake from the blessings and celebration from May 18th.
Join other Hancock Volunteers and meet new friends at Interfaith Garden on Saturday, June 21, 8-9:30am. Since 2010, volunteers from 14 faith communities have raised and delivered more than 5000 pounds of fresh, nutritious vegetables, herbs and fruit to Lexington's Food Pantry. Interfaith Garden welcomes all ages. No prior experience is necessary. All tools are supplied. Parking is available behind First Parish Church, across Lexington battle green. To volunteer on June 21 or 28, contact Laurel Cooley: cooley.laurel1@gmai.com.
The Cantata Fund
Your Chance to Support Music at Hancock

If you enjoyed the service this past Sunday and would like to make future Cantata Sundays possible, simply send a check to the church with "Cantata Fund" in the memo line. Not only will your gift allow us to create more special musical experiences in worship, these Sundays allow us to reach out to the community in a unique way.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Becca Lockwood's
Ecclesiastical Council

On Sunday, June 22 at 2:30 PM, one of our Student Minister's, Becca Lockwood, will jump her final hurdle before seeking a call in the United Church of Christ. At this gathering of local churches, Becca will be presented for questioning and conversation regarding her theology and call to ordained ministry. All are welcome to attend! As Becca is a resident of Maine, her "EC" will be at Casco Village Church, 941 Meadow Rd. Casco, Maine 04015. It is approximately 2:30 hours from Lexington.

If you are unable to attend, please say a prayer and send her a quick note. (Her email is Becca@HancockChurch.org). Thank you Becca for faithfully serving this congregation for two years! While she will be around part-time this summer, her final sermon at Hancock will be on July 13, 2014.
New Paraments!

The new green paraments for "Ordinary Time" were designed and made by Joan Rutila and MaryAnn Shupe with the help of the Project Group. The design was inspired by the grate work in the right front of the church covering the organ pipes and the stained glass in the chancel. Individual pieces of fabric were cut and fused to a black background giving it a "stained glass" effect.

Construction Status and Delays

Our construction project is in full swing, and the installation of the elevator is almost ready to begin. The contractor has been working on many other areas of the church as well and some of these (like the CE Wing) are almost complete. Problems in the kitchen related to a subcontractor are being resolved; work there will resume soon and the equipment is ready to install as soon as that is finished.

Work on the Narthex wall and the realigning of the doors with the aisles begins this week.

As we've been told a number of times, and as many of you know from your own home construction projects, it is not if there will be delays in a construction project, but when the delays will be identified. We have found ours! Due to an unforeseen problem with a pier from the 1960 addition as well as some other minor setbacks, our project will take longer to complete than we had hoped. This means that, come September, construction will still be happening at Hancock. Disappointing, surely, but we are committed to finishing the project correctly and doing it well so that our modifications can stand up to the test of time.

We will have a better sense of the project time frame once this pier has been repaired and the elevator installation begins. Be assured that we will keep you up to date as we gain information. Growing pains on the Green - but it's still for the Good!

Thank You to our
Pride Marshalls and Marchers!
Many thanks to everyone who marched this year! Pictured above are Brian, MaryAnn, Eliza, Sarah, Becca, Courtney, and Alex! Also many thanks to Ashley, Jamie, and Alex for leading as marshalls this year! To see a few more pictures,
Thanks to All Committee and
Team Members!

As the program year winds down we'd like to thank all committee and team members for all the work they have done this year under less than ideal conditions. The worship, education, service, and community-building missions of the church have all been accomplished with hard work and creativity, as has the work of  financial and building maintenance operations. We are grateful for the hours and energy volunteered on church life and wish everyone a restorative summer.
