A People Like Us: Stories from our Bible
Summer Worship at Hancock

Many churches slow down a bit during the summer in New England - ours included - but we certainly don't stop! Thematically, we'll be exploring a topic we're calling "A People Like Us: Stories from Our Bible."

Each week this summer we'll hear the Biblical stories of some familiar and (hopefully) not-so-familiar faces. We'll hear sermons from Alex, Becca, Nancy, Paul (at the end of the summer), and two guest worship leaders: Adam Hearlson, professor of preaching and director of the Wilson Chapel at Andover Newton, and June Cooper, executive director of City Mission Society. As the summer unfolds, we'll be sure to keep you updated on sermon topics and themes, and any associated programming. Here is the tentative schedule for the summer:

6/22/2014Alex Will
6/29/2014Nancy Rottman
7/6/2014Adam Hearlson
7/13/2014Becca Lockwood
7/20/2014Alex Will
7/27/2014Alex Will
8/3/2014Adam Hearlson
8/10/2014June Cooper
8/17/2014Paul Shupe

I couldn't be more excited to worship with you all this summer. I think it will be fun and meaningful. If you have any questions, please let me know.

-Alex

Narthex and  Sanctuary Back Wall Blocked Off, starting June 16th

Starting Monday, June 16, the Mass Ave entrance to the sanctuary will be closed. The back wall and narthex will be sealed off as work is being done to have the back wall doors line up with the aisles. This work will likely take 2-3 weeks. During this time, the sanctuary will still be in use, but please plan to use the back entrance from the parking lot, or the handicap side-door entrance.

SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

Interfaith Garden

Since 2010, volunteers from 14 faith communities have raised and delivered more than 5000 pounds of fresh, nutritious vegetables, herbs and fruit to Lexington's Food Pantry. Interfaith Garden welcomes all ages. No prior experience is necessary. All tools are supplied. Parking is available behind First Parish Church, across Lexington battle green. To volunteer on June 21 or 28, contact Laurel Cooley: cooley.laurel1@gmai.com.
The Cantata Fund
Your Chance to Support Music at Hancock

Did you know that only a small portion of our Cantata Sundays is paid for out of our operating budget? The vast majority of the resources for these two special Sundays each year comes from the Barney Cantata Fund. This fund, established in honor of Kay Barney, is replenished each year through a mix of donations from individuals and proceeds from our Concert Series.

If you enjoyed the service this past Sunday and would like to make future Cantata Sundays possible, simply send a check to the church with "Cantata Fund" in the memo line. Not only will your gift allow us to create more special musical experiences in worship, these Sundays allow us to reach out to the community in a unique way, and allow us to support professional musicians from throughout the area, enriching our culture for all. Gifts in any amount are welcome!

Flower Donations Needed

The flowers that bloom in the Spring ... the Summer ... the Fall ... and the Winter, on the alter, pulpit or lectern, are placed there to honor and remember the loved ones of the Hancock family. Not only do they add to the glory of the service, but, after church, they are delivered and shared with those especially in need of a visual symbol of our love and caring. To donate flowers for church, please contact Sally Wyman (
scwyman@gmail.com or 781-861-1929).
Thank you.

Lexington Food Pantry
Food of the month: 16 oz jars of Peanut Butter

Donation containers are located all around the church. Hancock has a long history of supporting the Pantry with food donations, monetary assistance and the most important: volunteers.

If you would like to distribute food at the pantry, please contact Scott Griffith at isb.scooter@gmail.com or 509-710-5371.
Is Your Pledge Up to Date?

As you head into summer, and all the places that the warm weather takes you, please remember that the expenses of your church continue throughout the summer months. Why not make your gifts now, while you're thinking about it? Thanks for your on-going support of the ministries of Hancock.
Congratulations to Courtney Jones!

Hancock is rightly proud of our own Courtney Jones, who this past week graduated from Andover Newton Theological School and now begins her search for a settled ministry in a congregation.  Simultaneously, Courtney has been invited to join an interfaith tour of Israel this summer with the Jewish Community Relations Council.

To congratulate Courtney, and to help defray her expenses, gifts are being received.  You can contribute by sending checks payable to "Hancock Church" with "Courtney Jones" in the memo line, or online at:

Let's help Courtney continue her growth and let her know how pleased we are for her!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Thanks to All Committee and
Team Members!

As the program year winds down we'd like to thank all committee and team members for all the work they have done this year under less than ideal conditions. The worship, education, service, and community-building missions of the church have all been accomplished with hard work and creativity, as has the work of  financial and building maintenance operations. We are grateful for the hours and energy volunteered on church life and wish everyone a restorative summer.

-Yvette Kirby and Brian Keeping, Moderators
