Reception of New Members

"We are blessed this morning to to hear the great Good News of God's love for the world in a unique way. The acclaimed band Monroe Crossing, along with our choir, will present "The World Beloved: a Bluegrass Mass" by Carol Barnett, text by Marisha Chamberlain.  As we welcome new members into our congregation, we pray that our love for one another might be a visible reflection of God's love for our world.  With grateful hearts, we worship God together."

Worship @the Well has ended for the summer.

Please join us again in the fall on September 14th!

SPOTLIGHT

June 2, 2014

Beloved Hancock Friends,

What a send-off!  I'm blown away by your thoughtfulness, generosity, and well wishes.  It was a weekend I'll never forget.  And it will take a few weeks for me to recover!

Thank you for the gifts:  the beautiful table that will remind me of all the sacred meals we've shared together, the "Ask, Seek, Knock" tapestry that will hang on office wall and remind me of your creativity, the book of letters that will remind me of the many stories and memories shared, and Marilyn Becker's beautifully composed piece, "Strengthen for Service" that will remind me of our shared passion for social justice.  Thank you Hancock!  I know that my ministry will be sustained and guided by how you have shaped me and taught me.

While our mutual love and affection remain, our relationship as pastor and parishioner has now come to an end. I will no longer be your spiritual leader; I will no longer be visiting you at home or in the hospital; I will no longer be leading worship or conducting funerals, weddings, or baptisms. The ethical guidelines for clergy insist that I refrain from being available to you as a pastor so that there will be space in your hearts and lives for the new Minister that you will call.  And I need the room in my heart for the good people of South Church in Andover who have called me to be their Senior Pastor.

As Pam and Alex step into new roles, they bring a great many gifts. I pray that you extend to them the same love you have so generously given to me.  And I pray that you offer your support and care to Paul during this time of transition.  With the work of the search committee, the completion of the building project, and the dedication of the new space, this will be a busy year for him. Extend a good measure of grace as Paul leans into this Promised Land with all of you.

Finally, I love you and I'll miss you.  And I will try to remember that when the grief feels overwhelming, that its a sign of love.  There's a direct correlation between the depth of our grief and the depth of our love.

In the end, the Good News remains: God goes with us, whether we are gathered or scattered. In Christ, we are one body, united, no matter where our journeys lead us.

With love and gratitude,

Dana, Sean, Leighton, & Bono

Congratulations to Courtney Jones!

Hancock is rightly proud of our own Courtney Jones, who this past week graduated from Andover Newton Theological School and now begins her search for a settled ministry in a congregation.  Simultaneously, Courtney has been invited to join an interfaith tour of Israel this summer with the Jewish Community Relations Council.

To congratulate Courtney, and to help defray her expenses, gifts are being received.  You can contribute by sending checks payable to "Hancock Church" with "Courtney Jones" in the memo line, or online at:

Let's help Courtney continue her growth and let her know how pleased we are for her!

Flower Donations Needed

The flowers that bloom in the Spring ... the Summer ... the Fall ... and the Winter, on the alter, pulpit or lectern, are placed there to honor and remember the loved ones of the Hancock family. Not only do they add to the glory of the service, but, after church, they are delivered and shared with those especially in need of a visual symbol of our love and caring. To donate flowers for church, please contact Sally Wyman (
scwyman@gmail.com or 781-861-1929).
Thank you.

Lexington Food Pantry

Donation containers are located all around the church. Hancock has a long history of supporting the Pantry with food donations, monetary assistance and the most important: volunteers.

If you would like to distribute food at the pantry, please contact Scott Griffith at isb.scooter@gmail.com or 509-710-5371.
Is Your Pledge Up to Date?

As you head into summer, and all the places that the warm weather takes you, please remember that the expenses of your church continue throughout the summer months. Why not make your gifts now, while you're thinking about it? Thanks for your on-going support of the ministries of Hancock.

Summer 2014 at Hancock
A People Like Us: Stories from our Bible

Many churches slow down a bit during the summer in New England - ours included - but we certainly don't stop! Thematically, we'll be exploring a topic we're calling "A People Like Us: Stories from Our Bible."

Each week this summer we'll hear the Biblical stories of some familiar and (hopefully) not-so-familiar faces. We'll hear sermons from Alex, Becca, Nancy, Paul (at the end of the summer), and two guest worship leaders: Adam Hearlson, professor of preaching and director of the Wilson Chapel at Andover Newton, and June Cooper, executive director of City Mission Society. As the summer unfolds, we'll be sure to keep you updated on sermon topics and themes, and any associated programming. Here is the tentative schedule for the summer:

6/22/2014Alex Will
6/29/2014Nancy Rottman
7/6/2014Adam Hearlson
7/13/2014Becca Lockwood
7/20/2014Alex Will
7/27/2014Alex Will
8/3/2014Adam Hearlson
8/10/2014June Cooper
8/17/2014Paul Shupe

I couldn't be more excited to worship with you all this summer. I think it will be fun and meaningful. If you have any questions, please let me know.

-Alex
We're Looking for Summer Liturgists

Have you ever thought about reading scripture during worship, or writing a prayer? The summer at Hancock is a wonderful opportunity to try something new. If you'll be around this summer, and you'd be interested in helping lead worship on Sundays, please let me know. Even if you've never done it before, I'm willing to sit down with you and help you learn a bit more about worship leading. No divinity degree or robe required! Email
Alex.Will@hancockchurch.org if you have any questions or to let me know that you're interested.
