ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ed Dooks shares a special photo

The date is April 22, 1965 and I was there as a news photographer for WBZ TV. Dr. King had just arrived at Logan Airport. Back in 1965 there were no jet ways. Photographing dignitaries was done at the steps of the aircraft. I am the one behind Dr. King's head wearing glasses, earphones on my ears. I'm listening to the audio recording in the film camera I have on my shoulder. Dr. King arrived in Boston to support a march from the Carter Playground on Columbus Avenue to the Parkman Bandstand for a rally on the Boston Common. The other photographers in the background are, on the left, Dave Marlin from CBS News and Frank Curtin of the Associated Press, who is holding his camera over his head.

First Thursday Discussion Group
Do you ever wonder if prayer holds power?  Can prayer change circumstances and situations?  How does prayer shape the person who prays?

Whether you pray a little or a lot, come to the First Thursday Discussion group for an open-minded, judgement-free place to explore this fascinating topic.

We will focus on Dr. Marjorie Hewitt Suchocki's book, In God's Presence - Theological Reflections on Prayer. The group will meet February 6, March 6, and April 3 at 10 am in the Pearson Room. The book is available on Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble used and new. If you would like your book ordered for $14.39, please send an email to smithmartin224@verizon.net by Wednesday, February 29. All books to be picked up at the church office.
Thank you for giving

"Thank you for financially supporting our church, so we can do God's work. To those who wonder if you should submit a pledge: The answer is Yes..."

Come and see what is taking place behind those plywood partitions.
New Student Minister Program at Hancock

Paul is pleased to announce the beginning of the Student Minister Program at Hancock. In partnership with Andover-Newton Theological School, Hancock will expand our traditional seminarian program. Each year one entering student at ANTS will be come to work at Hancock as a Student Minister. S/he will work at Hancock 25 hours per week, earning a fair wage for their work, as well as academic credit toward their Master of Divinity degree. Student Ministers will be with us four full years before graduating. Eventually, all our part-time program staff positions will be filled with Student Ministers.

We think it's a program that will benefit Hancock, Andover Newton, and seminary students in equal measure. Details can be found here.

The Human Resources Committee, the Teaching Parish Committee and the Standing Committee have all given the program their blessing. Paul welcomes your comments, concerns or questions: paul@hancockchurch.org.

TV Studio Needs Your Help

The television studio needs your help. Some of our watchers are reporting interruptions in service. From our observation, we are now sending out to LexMedia a "clean" program, with no video or audio issues. Our return monitor from RCN indicates a "clean" program as well. Since our signal is not the problem, it lies with our partners.

For anyone watching our broadcasts, if you are having any technical issues whatsoever, please report them to us for followup. Please include the following information:

  • The date and time of the broadcast
  • the cable provider that you use (Comcast, RCN or Verizon), or if you viewed it livestreaming on the LexMedia website
  • a description of the problem, as specifically as you can
  • your contact information for further questions and to follow progress in correcting the situation.
Please furnish this information to Sue Rockwell srrockwell@juno.com or telephone during normal business hours at 781-863-1233. Thank you for helping us make sure your viewing experience is the best it can be.

MUSIC

Start the New Year Singing!

Our Chancel Choir is seeking 2-3 sopranos and 2 more tenors to join our excellent group! Other parts are always welcome, of course, but we have real need of more voices in these two sections. Come join us!

Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:15 in the chapel. For information, contact Mark Morgan at 781-862-4220 ext 212 or mark@hancockchurch.org.

 SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

Give a Sign of God's
(and Hancock's) Love in 2014

Every Sunday, the beautiful flowers that adorn the chancel, pulpit and lectern are given in memory of a person loved by a member of our congregation.

After we are blessed with their beauty, one person volunteers to make a few small bouquets for delivery to our members who could use a small sign of love. No special skills or words are required, just an open heart and a small amount of your time.

If you'd like to volunteer, please head over to

this spreadsheet (google doc)

and pick an open date. Alex will be in contact the week prior to your visit to confirm your availability. If your plans change, that's okay too! Feel free to take a chance and sign up. If you have any questions, please let Congregational Care Coordinator Alex Shea Will know. Thank you!

In Hope,

Alex Shea Will
