UPCOMING EVENTS

Seeking Hancock Givers

stewardship2013

To those families and individuals who are still considering making a pledge: You matter. Please join your fellow Hancock friends and family by making a faith filled promise to give in 2014. All gifts and all amounts are gratefully received.

By pledging, we all learn to give intentionally and as a priority in our busy lives. Since Hancock is part of the congregational tradition, there is no outside funding from a central office or institution sending money to our church. Our dollars help to fund everything we do.

We are seeking all Hancock friends and family who have yet to make a faith filled promise to support Hancock in 2014.In the three weeks since Commitment Sunday, 162 individuals and families pledged to financially support Hancock ministries in 2014. Last year, 241 pledges were submitted to support Hancock ministries. Now is the time to send in your pledge information.

3 Ways To Give:

Acts of Kindness  are Encouraged to mark one-year anniversary of Newtown Shooting

December 14th will mark the one-year anniversary of the Newton Shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Residents of Newtown have decided they don't want any sort national commemoration for what happened, rather they are endorsing the idea of "service to each other." You can read more about this here (WBUR.org).

Service and giving are an important part of this season, and an important part of the Hancock Church community. If you would like a  way of commemorating Newtown, consider donatin
g a children's winter coat. City Mission Society is holding coat drive (COAT BOSTON 2013). If you'd like to take part, please contact Pam Cochrane at pam.cochrane@hancockchurch.org. You can bring a coat to the church office, and she will deliver coats to CMS this Saturday.

Dec 15th Caroling Party
Come Sing With Us for Intergenerational Caroling followed by a Pizza and Salad Dinner
Hancock Christmas Caroling
For many years, Hancock Members have prepared for Christmas by sharing the melodies of the traditional carols. Similar to last year, we have revised the schedule to make the event better for families with young children.

We'll meet in the Dining Room at 3:00 p.m. to divide into groups. Then we'll spread the joy of Christmas by visiting and singing carols to our shut-ins.

We'll meet back at Hancock at 5:00 p.m. for a pizza and salad dinner hosted by the Music and Arts Committee in the Dining Room. This will end in time to attend the evening Worship @the Well.

If you would like to participate, please see Steve Cooper during coffee hour or email cooper.landlord@gmail.com.
Celebrate a Celtic Christmas
Worship @the Well on December 22nd

Special Music at the Well The sound of Irish flute, pennywhistle, guitar, bouzouki, and great voices will fill the night as Hancock Church celebrates a Celtic Christmas. On December 22nd at 6:15 p.m. in Clark Hall,  internationally recognized Celtic musicians Matt and Shannon Heaton will join the Well's resident ensemble, the River Rock Band, for an evening of traditional carols in true Celtic style. Music will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Boston-based Matt and Shannon Heaton have an inventive approach to traditional tunes and ballads. The Boston Herald lauds them on their "majestic excellence", and they are winners of Live Ireland's "Trad Fusion Album of the Year." To hear a recording of them singing in last year's Celtic Christmas go HERE.

The River Rock Band is led by Hancock's Director of Music, Mark Morgan, and features a rotating ensemble of professional and talented amateur players who play music from around the world and across the centuries in worship each week.
Come Sing for Christmas Eve!

Singers in all parts are encouraged to join the choir in singing for our 8:00 p.m. Christmas Eve service.

Rehearsals are on Thursday the 12th and 19th from 8:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the chapel. All singers middle school age and older are invited. Need not be church members--invite your friends and neighbors! For more information, contact Mark Morgan, Director of Music at mark@hancockchurch.org.
Last Chance To Tell Us
Your Favorite Hymns!

Our hymn survey is about to close! We've had a great response, but would still like to hear from as many people as possible. Survey is and takes only  a few minutes. Help us choose the new hymnal for the next several decades of worship at Hancock!

Charitable Contributions and Tax Breaks
A note from Tom Ransohoff

Earlier this year Hancock received a note from Renee Liabraaten regarding IRA transfers that may be of interest for those who are 70-1/2 and over and who are considering donations to Hancock or other charitable organizations in 2013.

The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (the "Act") extended the ability for IRA owners to make qualified charitable distributions (QCDs). The Act extended for 2012 and 2013 the ability for IRA owners age 70-1/2 or older to make tax-free gifts of up to $100,000, including the required minimum distribution (RMD) amount, from their IRAs directly to a qualified charity. Unlike 2012 QCDs, which could still be made in January 2013 under the Act, 2013 QCDs must be made by the end of this calendar year.

Although IRA owners will not receive a tax deduction for the charitable gift, they pay no tax on the amount gifted from the IRA to the charity. This provision has been popular because it can satisfy the IRA's RMD without a tax consequence to the IRA owner. Anyone taking advantage of this opportunity should consult with their tax advisor about tax reporting for the QCDs.

Hancock Endowment Matters...

[This is the third in a series of communications about Hancock's Endowment, its uses, and the many ways which gifts can be made.]

DID YOU KNOW? ...

Gifts made to Hancock's Endowment Funds can be specified by the donor to be used either for the general purposes of the church, or to support specified aspects of our program. Hancock's largest endowment fund is our General Endowment, which continues to be augmented by memorial gifts, bequests, and individual gifts.

Other endowment funds target particular needs, like a gift made by the Kraley family that supports the church's music program.   Another gift made by the Wadsworth family benefits Hancock's educational and scholarship needs.

Gifts to the General Endowment are made without purpose restrictions, allowing Standing Committee to apply those funds towards critical needs of the church. As such, they afford us the greatest flexibility in allocating our resources. All endowment gifts, whether for general or specified purposes, are highly valued and important to the church's future.

We will profile examples of both types in upcoming articles in this newsletter.

If you are interested in learning more about Hancock's Endowment or are interested in learning more about giving to the Endowment, please contact Brad Crooke of the Endowment Committee at (781) 862-4830 or bcrookie@comcast.net.
Last Sunday we had a Wonderful Manger Sunday and Happy Holiday Fair! Many Thanks are in order for all the events and celebration!

Thank you for your gifts on Manger Sunday!

If you'd like to volunteer at the Christmas Shop in Winchester, please contact April Julich Perez (aprilpomme@yahoo.com). Hancock's allotted time is December 14, from 10 am to 12 pm

Hancock Holiday Fair Raised
$17,000 for 21 Non-Profits!

The Hancock Holiday Fair Team wants to thank all who did their Christmas shopping at our 13th annual Holiday Fair. Despite the dislocation and heavy traffic experienced - we brought in about $17,000 which will directly benefit the 21 non- profits who participated this year. We especially want to thank our many volunteers who helped in the organization, set-up and staffing of tables.

As always, we rely on our excellent office staff and custodial support to keep things running smoothly - thanks to Dan, Bill, Renaldo, and Jane and Tamara for their much-needed help. We would really appreciate any ideas or feedback anyone might like to share with us to help us in planning next year's Fair.

We can be reached by email.

Thanks again!

CeCePotter, Janet Woit and Sandra Shaw

Thank you for visiting the Heifer Table!

Thank you for visiting the Heifer Table at the Holiday Fair! Living Gifts from Heifer help more than just one family improve their living condition. They help entire communities grow.

It's not too late to purchase a living gift from Heifer International. If you'd like to honor someone with the gift of a cow, chicken, duck, or other animal, please contact Pam Cochrane at pam.cochrane@hancockchurch.org.
Thank you for donating to the
Concord Prison Outreach

Many, many thanks to the all the people at Hancock Church who contributed  items for Concord Prison  Outreach. Though the boxes of "approved  gifts" was  not as colorful as the Manger, with those wonderful stuffed animals waving from the top, be assured that these simple gifts will mean a great deal to the men incarcerated at the two prisons in Concord.

I was able  despite the snow and slush out here in the western burbs to deliver a very impressive load to the sorting point on  Monday, and they were most gratefully received.

-Louise Haldeman
