Fuller Center For Housing
Annual Legacy Build 2014

This year the Fuller Center for Housing will host its annual Legacy Build in memory of Millard Fuller in Louisville, KY April 6-11, 2014. The goal is to renovate 10 houses in the Shawnee neighborhood of Louisville, once a lovely family neighborhood that has sunk into disrepair over the last half century. The Fuller Center Covenant Partner in Louisville is a very proactive organization with support from the city, business organizations, and the religious community. Incorporated just four years ago, they have been vigorously revitalizing this area of abandoned and substandard housing.

Hancock is planning to send a delegation. All skill levels are needed. Training will be provided. Registration of $200 ($225 after Dec 1, $250 after Mar 1) covers lunches, snacks, and dinners. Transportation will be determined by the participants: rental van, sharing driving and costs, or flying are the most likely options. Housing is available at Hotel Louisville, a training program for needy individuals, at $25 per night double occupancy or there is a local Holiday Inn Express for $75 per night.

This is an opportunity to make a big difference in the life of a family, doing God's work, working side by side with home owners and volunteers from Hancock and around the country.

If you are interested in learning more or for questions, contact Cheryl Kraley at cheryl@kraley.com or 781-862-2209. (Cheryl and Mike Kraley attended a build at this site in March 2011.) Additional information is available at. If you plan to attend, you can register online now to get the early bird rate. To be included on future e-mails, send an e-mail to cheryl@kraley.com. An organizational meeting for all those on the e-mail list will be scheduled for January to arrange transportation, housing, etc.

Nov 20th is Registration Deadline
for Panama Service Trip

Why is Nancy Rottman
going to Panama?

If you had asked me a month ago if I would ever go to Panama in my lifetime, I suppose I would have mused about possibly, someday, maybe taking a cruise through the canal. However, as a service trip enthusiast, I jumped at the opportunity came up to go to Panama with a group of Hancock folks. I am thrilled to be going on this service learning opportunity with Sustainable Harvest International. I believe this kind of experience builds lasting relationships that benefit everyone involved.

While the work that we do will directly benefit the community of Tranquilla, as individuals from the Hancock Community and the Lexington Community, we will build intergenerational connections, learn about caring for our creation, and work to eliminate poverty. This knowledge can then be applied locally, in our own lives and community.

We will be traveling over February school vacation, the week of February 16th, and this trip is open to participants age 15 and older. I hope you will think about coming along with me to discover Panama and its people. We'll build deep connections to them, to one another, and to God's creation.

Dios los bendiga (God Bless You),

Nancy

Bring MORE Cans to Morning Worship
this Sunday!
If you're not sure what to bring,
November is canned fruit

This Sunday (November 17), we would like everyone to bring canned goods for the Lexington Food Pantry.

We'll decorate the Sanctuary with non-perishable food goods of all different colors to remind us of this month's theme: Gratitude.

Look for baskets in the sanctuary, or place your cans and boxed foods along the side walls (see photo below). The food of the month for November is 15 oz canned fruit, along with 20-22oz pineapple.

We accept donations to the food pantry all-year long. Donation containers for the Lexington Food Pantry are located all around the church. Hancock has a long history of supporting the Pantry with food donations, monetary assistance and the most important: volunteers.

Nov 19th Theology on Tap at Orlean's
In a place apart from the layers of meaning in our churches, all are welcome to commune in theological discussion at Orlean's in Davis Sq. There might not be a cross on any of the walls or an organ in the corner, but God still manages to show up!

Theology on Tap meets the last Tuesday of every month (usually). Send a message to BostonTot@groups.facebook.com to join our facebook group! Keep up with discussion topics and other events.

Nov 24th is Pledge Sunday
What is Stewardship?
stewardship2013

Stewardship is:

1. What I do, with all that I have, after I say, "I believe."
2. Using the gifts God has given us to do the work God is calling us to do.

Recently, a fellow Hancock member suggested rather than providing guidelines on how much to give to Hancock, that we invite our congregation to consider this question: "How much do you keep?"

If Stewardship is what you do with all that you have after you say, "I believe", how do you answer the question of how much to keep? As you prayerfully consider your individual needs and the needs in the greater world, what will you do with all that you have?

The dollars given to Hancock Church for use in 2014 allow our congregation to do the work God is calling us to do: helping those less fortunate, caring for each other, and learning and growing in relationship with God. Unlike some other denominations, Hancock does not receive support from a central office or institution. By completing a pledge card and stating the amount you will give in 2014, you provide lay leadership with more certainty and the ability to plan for next year. Since we are part of the congregational tradition, we carry both the authority and the responsibility for our building and our finances.

To learn more about stewardship in the congregational tradition, please go the Hancock Church website.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Gather 'Round to be Published!

We have learned that our gathering of children song, "Gather 'Round", is to be published next year by Hope Publishing, one of the largest sacred music publishers in the U.S.

Written by our Director of Music, Mark Morgan, specifically for Hancock, the song will be published in a new collection called At Your Altars, due out in June 2014. Mark says: "It fills a hole in many Protestant services--that spot where the children come forward. There's very little music appropriate for that moment in worship, and I'm glad to have it shared with the wider world."

Congratulations Mark! What a wonderful contribution to morning worship!

It's time to order Poinsettias

We'd love for everyone volunteer, and maybe, meet a church a member you wouldn't normally get to meet!

Hymnal Committee Survey

The Hymnal Committee is asking for your help. We would like everyone to be involved in choosing our new hymnal. We have prepared a survey which you can fill out anonymously.

Follow this link to fill out the survey:

 https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HancockHymnal

If you prefer a paper survey, some will be some available after church on November 17 and November 24 at coffee hour. We would like you to complete the survey electronically if it is at all possible, but if you are not able to do that, you may use a paper survey.

Temporary Kitchenette built in Pearson
The Pearson Kitchenette has been temporarily set up while the main kitchen is under renovation. Now Parish Life is able to store refrigerated items, make coffee, and - most importantly - have a source of running water for clean up! Having these services close to Clark Hall will help with our Fellowship Hour after morning worship. This area will eventually be remodeled into a full-functioning kitchenette with a fridge, sink and cabinets. Stop by the Pearson Room and check it out!
Missing Jacket
Bill Grover's jacket was mistakenly taken from the coat rack in the upper hallway. Bill found a similar jacket that he thinks belongs to the person who wore his jacket home. The jacket Bill found is a men's medium, lightweight, green jacket made by Casual Joe. It has two side pockets that have zippers. Bill's jacket that is missing is of a heavier weight and is browner than the one that was left. If you accidentally wore the wrong jacket home, could you please contact the church office at 781-862-4220 or drop it off at the church on Sunday or at your convenience.

 EDUCATION & SMALL GROUPS

Join First Thursday Discussion Group for their last session of the year!

The First Thursday Discussion Group will continue this fall. Rev. Dana Allen Walsh will be leading the group. The group meets:

   October 3

   November 7 - we'll be discussing ch. 5-8

   December 5

at 10 am in the Pearson room

We will be discussing Lean In:  Women, Work and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg. All are welcome to join the group for a lively conversation of thinking outside of the box. Contact: Lois Smith Martin smithmartin224@verizon.net, (781) 270-0304.

There is a lot of buzz about this new book.

Like or dislike; agree or disagree, come and join the conversation!  Here are some quotes from the book we'll be discussing:

"What would you do if you weren't afraid?"

"Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure that impact lasts in your absence."

"We cannot change what we are not aware of, and once we are aware, we cannot help but change."

It is a book that both men and women can share in a conversation of how to better communicate in the workplace. Even if you are out of the workplace at the present moment, your experiences can add to the discussion. We hope you will join us in discussing this much talked about book.

The first four chapters will be discussed October 3rd.
