Free Program on Caring for Someone with Dementia at Temple Emunah

Balancing Act: When to Step In, When to Let Go, While Caring for Someone with Dementia. Sunday afternoon, November 3, 2:00-3:30pm at Temple Emunah, 9 Piper Rd., Lexington. A growing number of adults are now caring for family members with some level of dementia. As many as 6.8 million people in the United States suffer from the illness. While research has greatly improved our understanding of what dementia is, who gets it, and how it develops and affects the brain, the people who are caring for those with it continue to find themselves with difficult questions and increasing need for support. Please join us as we discuss the complex issues associated with caring for someone with dementia.

Marjorie Sokoll, founder and director of Healing Connections and Beth Soltzberg, coordinator of Living with Chronic Illness, both of Jewish Family & Children's Service, will lead this free program which is open to all faiths in all surrounding communities. Sponsored by the Phyllis Klein Thrope Memorial Fund. To register, email thropeprogram@templeemunah.org or call 781/861-0300.

 SPOTLIGHT

Lexington High School Choir
at Hancock Tonight!
LHS choir Hancock Church is proud to host a concert by the The Lexington High School Madrigal Singers, Women's Chorus and Concert Choir tonight at 7:30 in the sanctuary. According to Director of Choruses, Jason Iannuzzi, the venue gives Lexington High School's talented student singers the experience of performing in a space with state-of-the-art acoustics. The pieces in the impressive and challenging concert repertoire span a range of global cultures, languages, and musical genres.

Highlights include song settings from the folk traditions of Spain and China and works celebrating the 200
th birthday of the great Italian Romantic composer, Giuseppe Verdi, and the 100th birthday of Britain's masterful choral composer, Benjamin Britten. Students will sing the lush opera choruses from Verdi's Nabucco and Macbeth, Britten's elegant Flower Songs, in which he set his favorite Victorian nature poems to music, and his Festival Te Deum for Chorus and Organ.

Justin Thomas Blackwell, Associate Music Director and Organist at Boston University's Marsh Chapel, joins the choruses as guest artist. It is a program with something for everyone and a wonderful showcase of the skill and dedication of Lexington High School's choral groups.

The concert is free and open to the public. The LHS Madrigal Singers will be sharing music during Sunday morning worship with us in the new year.
Learning in the Living Room!
Wednesdays, 7:30- 9pm
The Learning in the Living Room series continues this evening (October 16th) with the session "What Can We Learn From Evangelicals?" led by Dana Allen Walsh. The meeting will start at 7:30 pm and conclude at 9 pm. Our hosts will be Yvette and Bill Kirby at 272 Concord Ave.

WEEK 5: OCT 30th

What Can We Learn From Evangelicals?

Discussion led by Dana Allen Walsh

Hosted by Yvette and Bill Kirby at 272 Concord Ave (entrance on Scott Rd.)

In the past 50 years, there has been a cultural shift from mainline Protestant Christianity to a more fundamental, evangelical theology in our country.  What attracts people to the evangelical church?  How is it different from the ways we worship and practice?  What can we learn from our evangelical brothers and sisters?

Last Session in the Living in the Living Room Series:
Nov 6 "Growing Up Catholic; Finding a Home at Hancock"
led by Paul Shupe and Dana Allen Walsh

Letter from Paul and MaryAnn Shupe

Dear Hancock Friends,

Our son Nate has completed the minimum four rounds of chemotherapy. The next development will be tests to assess the progress of the treatment against the cancer. These tests will be scheduled as soon as Nate's body recovers sufficiently, a process that has no firm timetable. We wait, still very much in hopefulness, and try not to worry too much. Your continuing support means the world to us, and we are so grateful for your thoughts and prayers.

In Gratitude,

Paul and MaryAnn

 ANNOUNCEMENTS & EVENTS

Thank you for the fabulous weekend!

Last Saturday, Hancock hosted its first Intergenerational Pumpkin Carving Party! Many thanks to Lisa Mingolla and everyone who participated!

Our first 20/30/40-something brunch was a great success! We had 23 people attend along with 5 children. It was a great opportunity for casual conversation and deepening our relationships with one another. Mark your calendar for our next brunch: Sunday, January 12th!
Harvest Pot Luck Supper
Come and celebrate the season with our Harvest Pot Luck Supper on Saturday, November 16, from 6-8pm in Clark Hall. This is a wonderful way to meet new friends and connect with old friends.

Please bring dishes ready to serve, including the serving utensils. We will have some plugs available for any sih served from a crock pot. You can sign up at any coffee hour, or contact Barbara Martin at barhammar@gmail.com, or (781) 674-0017. Please sign up for the dish you would like to bring. Beverages will be provided by Parish Life.

Holiday Fair Save the Date
Though our church is undergoing re-construction, we will once again be holding our popular annual Hancock Holiday Fair, directly following Manger Sunday. Plan to do some Christmas shopping for unique gifts that will make folks happy, while also helping the many non-profit agencies who will be participating this year. Watch for further details regarding this exciting Hancock tradition!

How has Giving Enriched Your Spiritual Practice? Tell us your story!
stewardship2013 The prayer flags we made in church on October 27 will adorn Clark Hall this Sunday. They reflect all the ways we serve God and our neighbors through the missions of Hancock Church.

Do you have a special story to tell about how giving to others has enriched your life and your faith? We want to hear it!

Please email stewardship@hancockchurch.org if you would like to take part in a story-collection project for use in an upcoming service. Or look for Stewardship Team members at coffee hour on Sunday,  November 3rd.

Our Stewardship theme is "Delight in Giving." Over the next several weeks, our congregation is pondering these questions together:

When have you experienced unexpected abundance? When have you experienced surprising delight in giving that
generated joy in others? When has giving lead to deeper connections with others in your life?

We are collecting people's answers to these questions as part of our preparation for November 24th. Don't forget to join us on November 24 for a celebration of giving at Commitment Sunday!

Your Stewardship 2014 Team,
Bess Deck, Robin DiGiammarino, Skip Irving, Manuel Navia

Hancock Endowment Matters

DID YOU KNOW? ... most religious, academic and cultural institutions depend on endowments for financial support?

Endowments are established to hold permanently-restricted assets that both support the institution's short term needs and, perhaps more importantly, to provide financial support to the institution for future generations. Endowments are built from gifts by individuals (or groups of individuals), providing investment income which can be used for specific purpose(s) deemed critical by the institution or per the directive of the giver..

Hancock Church is no exception. Though Hancock is doing well, a strong Endowment can provide enhanced funding for a variety of  important activities connected to its ministry, education, and operations. Here at Hancock, Endowment gifts are unique acts of love and faith. These gifts connect us to the legacy of those who have come before us and help us to leave our own legacy for the future.

If you are interested in learning more about Hancock's Endowment or are interested in learning more about giving to the Endowment, please contact Brad Crooke of the Endowment Committee at  781-862-4830 or bcrookie@comcast.net.

 EDUCATION & SMALL GROUPS

First Thursday Discussion Group

The First Thursday Discussion Group will continue this fall. Rev. Dana Allen Walsh will be leading the group. The group meets:

   October 3

   November 7 - we'll be discussing ch. 5-8

   December 5

at 10 am in the Pearson room

We will be discussing Lean In:  Women, Work and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg. All are welcome to join the group for a lively conversation of thinking outside of the box. Contact: Lois Smith Martin smithmartin224@verizon.net, (781) 270-0304.

There is a lot of buzz about this new book.

Like or dislike; agree or disagree, come and join the conversation!  Here are some quotes from the book we'll be discussing:

"What would you do if you weren't afraid?"

"Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure that impact lasts in your absence."

"We cannot change what we are not aware of, and once we are aware, we cannot help but change."

It is a book that both men and women can share in a conversation of how to better communicate in the workplace. Even if you are out of the workplace at the present moment, your experiences can add to the discussion. We hope you will join us in discussing this much talked about book.

The first four chapters will be discussed October 3rd.

Final Harvest at the Interfaith Garden
Last Saturday was the closing day at the garden! The last crops were picked and delivered. Volunteers from Hancock, Follen, and Isaiah pulled plants raked up old straw and newspaper paths, and spread hay. And thus the Interfaith Garden was "put to bed" for another year.

Thanks cannot be given too often to the many people who make this garden successful. To Carla who provides the space, expertise, hours and hours of her time and much patience; and to our many volunteers--Thanks! We need a lot of people to make it all happen. From the early days of hauling and spreading compost, to the busy summer Saturdays of picking 100+ pounds of produce, and the last days of piling exhausted plants pulled for the season. It was a good year! Hope to see you next season!

Lexington's Interfaith Garden, located near the Battle Green in Lexington Center, donates all of its produce to local food pantries and hunger relief programs. Volunteers of all ages from over fourteen faith communities work and learn together while planting, tending, and harvesting organically grown produce.

Fuller Center For Housing
Annual Legacy Build 2014

This year the Fuller Center for Housing will host its annual Legacy Build in memory of Millard Fuller in Louisville, KY April 6-11, 2014. The goal is to renovate 10 houses in the Shawnee neighborhood of Louisville, once a lovely family neighborhood that has sunk into disrepair over the last half century. The Fuller Center Covenant Partner in Louisville is a very proactive organization with support from the city, business organizations, and the religious community. Incorporated just four years ago, they have been vigorously revitalizing this area of abandoned and substandard housing.

Hancock is planning to send a delegation. All skill levels are needed. Training will be provided. Registration of $200 ($225 after Dec 1, $250 after Mar 1) covers lunches, snacks, and dinners. Transportation will be determined by the participants: rental van, sharing driving and costs, or flying are the most likely options. Housing is available at Hotel Louisville, a training program for needy individuals, at $25 per night double occupancy or there is a local Holiday Inn Express for $75 per night.

This is an opportunity to make a big difference in the life of a family, doing God's work, working side by side with home owners and volunteers from Hancock and around the country.

If you are interested in learning more or for questions, contact Cheryl Kraley at cheryl@kraley.com or 781-862-2209. (Cheryl and Mike Kraley attended a build at this site in March 2011.) Additional information is available at. If you plan to attend, you can register online now to get the early bird rate. To be included on future e-mails, send an e-mail to cheryl@kraley.com. An organizational meeting for all those on the e-mail list will be scheduled for January to arrange transportation, housing, etc.
