Balcony max occupancy is
49 people

For the duration of construction in accordance with the fire marshall, the balcony can only seat 49 people. If the ushers restrict you from sitting there, please know we have reached maximum occupancy.

We will do our best to keep you updated through the Hancock Weekly and on our website: www.hancockchurch.org. Please look out for signs, as building access could change on a daily basis. If you have any concerns about building access during the week, please call the Church Offices at (781) 862-4220.

Drive Slowly
Please drive slowly in the driveways and the parking lot. You've probably noticed pipes and building materials that make the space a little tighter. With a little less room to maneuver, driving slowly will keep us all safe (and maybe save you from having to get an alignment!).
October is Canned Vegetables!

The October Food of the month is Canned Vegetables (especially canned corn).

Donation containers for the Lexington Food Pantry are located all around the church. Hancock has a long history of supporting the Pantry with food donations, monetary assistance and the most important: volunteers.

If you would like to distribute food at the pantry, please contact Scott Griffith at isb.scooter@gmail.com or 509-710-5371.

Volunteer for Rosie's Place
Please join in and volunteer to cook a casserole for Rosie's Place, a shelter for homeless women in Boston. Ten Hancock congregation members cook a casserole in their home for the second Sunday in each month, and we drive them down to Rosie's Place. If you would like to cook once or twice this year, please email Linda Kilner Olivier at LAKilner@aol.com or contact Meg Weston or Marcia Gens.
Free Program on Caring for Someone with Dementia at Temple Emunah

Balancing Act: When to Step In, When to Let Go, While Caring for Someone with Dementia. Sunday afternoon, November 3, 2:00-3:30pm at Temple Emunah, 9 Piper Rd., Lexington. A growing number of adults are now caring for family members with some level of dementia. As many as 6.8 million people in the United States suffer from the illness. While research has greatly improved our understanding of what dementia is, who gets it, and how it develops and affects the brain, the people who are caring for those with it continue to find themselves with difficult questions and increasing need for support. Please join us as we discuss the complex issues associated with caring for someone with dementia.

Marjorie Sokoll, founder and director of Healing Connections and Beth Soltzberg, coordinator of Living with Chronic Illness, both of Jewish Family & Children's Service, will lead this free program which is open to all faiths in all surrounding communities. Sponsored by the Phyllis Klein Thrope Memorial Fund. To register, email thropeprogram@templeemunah.org or call 781/861-0300.

Building Update in Pictures

Who was parked in our Driveway?
Building Update
In late September, a crew and crane from CHM Welding (Keeping Buildings Together since 1984) prepares for a day of sky-high, heavy lifting. By the end of the afternoon, they had hoisted close to 5 tons of steel beams up and over Hancock and placed them in position to hold up walls near the new elevator.

What's that hovering over Hancock?
Building Update
In late September an enormous crane hoisted 2-ton wall support beams above Hancock. Then, they gently lowered them into the main courtyard.

What are those guys doing?
With impressive precision and a remarkable light touch, the wall support beams were gently lowered onto upright structure bolts. A team of welders from CHM Welding secured them in place.

WEEK 4: OCT 23

The Intersection of Scripture and Art

Discussion led by Pam Cochrane

Hosted by Nancy and Sam Altschuler at 2 Butterfield Rd

Ancient Story and New Voices shares stories of women in the Hebrew Bible, contemporary literature, and the world. Come explore the story, how the book was created and journey on the river that flows through the pages, and over time, bringing new life to the voices and images of those who walk in faith.

"I was searching to find a place where Biblical Text and modern tale can meet the pavement for readers and storytellers. Presented in a woven basket with cloth and palm branches, the book is nestled in its own shroud of protection. Perhaps as if prepared to be drawn from the river itself or cupped in the hands as an offering of solidarity and hospitality. This altered book is an invitation to join the story."

The remaining sessions planned:

Oct 30 "What can we learn from Evangelicals?"
   led by Dana Allen Walsh
Nov 6 "Growing Up Catholic; Finding a Home at Hancock"
led by Paul Shupe and Dana Allen Walsh

in Morning Worship and Coffee Hour!

This Sunday we will be receiving new members into our church family during worship at 10am. Please join the Welcoming and Membership Committee during Coffee Hour to celebrate the growth of our church with a piece of cake. And stop by to introduce yourself to Hancock's newest members.

New members join the church by affirmation of faith or letter of transfer from their previous church. To learn more about membership or about participating in the joining service, contact Rev. Paul Shupe or Rev. Dana Allen-Walsh in the church office, or Membership Committee chair Al Bukys at  membership@HancockChurch.org.

New Staff: Tamara Potselueva
Please welcome our new Administrative Assistant Tamara Potselueva!

Originally from Russia, Tamara and her mother moved to the US in 1992. There she finished high school in New Haven, CT, then ended up in Boston to attend Northeastern University. She has worked a variety of jobs including: a small Italian grocery store, a coffee shop, a collection agency, and Papa Razzi. After graduating with a B.A. in Graphic Design, she has held several design positions.

In 2005 she met her husband Tobias, online, while he was still living in Germany, and in 2006 he moved to US and they got married in July. He is a wonderful and caring person who has incredible artistic abilities. He also has a green thumb!

In 2008, her daughter Polina was born and has been the biggest inspiration to herself and her husband! Polina is in Kindergarten now, in a public school system, which comes with it's own challenges, but she is involved in PTO and other school associations.

Says Tamara, "In our spare time we like to be outside, attend local events, visit our friends, and cook delicious meals at home. Polina likes to chat weekly with her grandparents (who live in CT and Germany) via Skype, and tell them all about our latest happenings. I try to stay active locally, helping out at Polina's school and attending various Watertown residents' groups. Tobias is in a process of taking care of our garden, repairing an old motorcycle and helping our family friend with his scooter towing business."

Do come by the Offices to introduce yourself  in person!

Calling all HYG Parents/Guardians
Meeting for HYG Auction Planning

Date: Sunday, November 3rd

Time: Following Morning Church Service around 11:15 AM

Location: Hancock Church, Pearson Room

Topic: HYG Auction 2014

Every year, there is a HYG mission trip to Kentucky to support H.O.M.E.S. Inc. The HYG auction is organized and run every alternating year by HYG parents. The proceeds from the auction help supplement a portion of the trip expenses. Please come to this meeting to get more information about the auction and how you may help.

Whether or not you think your child will be going on this trip, the auction is a community building event for Hancock Church.  Volunteers range from new members, to long time members; families who have children attending HYG, to families who no longer have children attending HYG, participate in this event in one way or another.

So please consider being a part of this event. There are all sorts of volunteer jobs available. Some take very little time, some you can do from your computer at home and some require time the day before and during the event.

There is something for everyone. For more information, contact either:

Lori Bliss Tambone at ltambone@tambone.com or

Susan Navia at navia@rcn.com.

Thank you for making the Sanctuary beautiful with your Quilts and Prayer Shawls!

Thank you everyone bringing in your beautiful quilts prayer shawls to morning worship. As you can see by Paul Topalian's photos, they made the sanctuary bright, cheerful, warm, and welcoming! Be sure to take them home this Sunday.

On the second Sunday of November, we will ask everyone to bring in canned goods for the Lexington Food Pantry. We'll decorate the Sanctuary with canned food of all different colors to remind us of the theme for that month Gratitude.

Stewardship 2014: Delight In Giving
stewardship2013

This Sunday, October 27th, marks the start of a month of reflection as we prepare for Commitment Sunday on November 24th. On Commitment Sunday we will pledge our individual financial support for the work of Hancock in the coming year.

"Delight in Giving" is our Stewardship theme this year. Psalm 37:4 tells us: "Delight yourself in the Lord; And, he will give you all the desires of your heart." God knows our hearts, our needs and our desires even better than we do. While it may not always be apparent to us, he gives us what we need.

As members of Hancock, each of us serves in God's name, giving and receiving our talents, time and treasures in our own way. We do this with joy and with the knowledge that, through our giving and receiving, we will grow stronger in our faith.

Please join us this Sunday to celebrate our gifts of time and talent as we kick off a month of celebration and joy for all we have received and all the ways we can give back.

 EDUCATION & SMALL GROUPS

Theology on Tap Oct 29th
In a place apart from the layers of meaning in our churches, all are welcome to commune in theological discussion at Orlean's in Davis Sq. There might not be a cross on any of the walls or an organ in the corner, but God still manages to show up!

Theology on Tap meets the last Tuesday of every month. Send a message to BostonTot@groups.facebook.com to join our facebook group! Keep up with discussion topics and other events.

This months discussion topic: Zombies!!! What?
First Thursday Discussion Group

The First Thursday Discussion Group will continue this fall. Rev. Dana Allen Walsh will be leading the group. The group meets:

   October 3

   November 7 - we'll be discussing ch. 5-8

   December 5

at 10 am in the Pearson room

We will be discussing Lean In:  Women, Work and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg. All are welcome to join the group for a lively conversation of thinking outside of the box. Contact: Lois Smith Martin smithmartin224@verizon.net, (781) 270-0304.

There is a lot of buzz about this new book.

Like or dislike; agree or disagree, come and join the conversation!  Here are some quotes from the book we'll be discussing:

"What would you do if you weren't afraid?"

"Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure that impact lasts in your absence."

"We cannot change what we are not aware of, and once we are aware, we cannot help but change."

It is a book that both men and women can share in a conversation of how to better communicate in the workplace. Even if you are out of the workplace at the present moment, your experiences can add to the discussion. We hope you will join us in discussing this much talked about book.

The first four chapters will be discussed October 3rd.

Interfaith Garden Keeps Growing and Giving
Interfaith Garden
It's hard to believe we are mid-October already!  Not too long before the garden closes on Oct 29th.

I chatted with a few Hancock members on Saturday who came to offer extra help at the garden. There are so many of you who graciously give to ensure this endeavor is a success.  Just look at the latest numbers that Mark Sandeen has been tracking.  He reports:

".....1,541 pounds of produce so far. We are 96 pounds away from last year's record.  We've delivered 181 pounds of tomatoes, 141 pounds of cucumbers, 126 pounds of eggplant, 122 pounds of potatoes, 120 pounds of onions, 102 pounds of lettuce, 95 pounds of both Swiss Chard and cabbage, 77 pounds of both butternut squash and beans, 49 pounds of zucchini, and 24 pounds of asparagus."

Without your help, these numbers wouldn't be possible!
