The Hancock Weekly is distributed every Wednesday morning. All submissions are due the Tuesday prior at 3 p.m.

   Image as an attachment

Please send them to Jane Park: office@hancockchurch.org.

Balcony max occupancy is
49 people

For the duration of construction in accordance with the fire marshall, the balcony can only seat 49 people. If the ushers restrict you from sitting there, please know we have reached maximum occupancy.

We will do our best to keep you updated through the Hancock Weekly and on our website: www.hancockchurch.org. Please look out for signs, as building access could change on a daily basis. If you have any concerns about building access during the week, please call the Church Offices at (781) 862-4220.

Drive Slowly
Please drive slowly in the driveways and the parking lot. You've probably noticed pipes and building materials that make the space a little tighter. With a little less room to maneuver, driving slowly will keep us all safe (and maybe save you from having to get an alignment!).
October is Canned Vegetables!

The October Food of the month is Canned Vegetables (especially canned corn).

Along with this we will be serving at the food bank on Saturday the 12th of October.

Donation containers for the Lexington Food Pantry are located all around the church. Hancock has a long history of supporting the Pantry with food donations, monetary assistance and the most important: volunteers.

If you would like to distribute food at the pantry, please contact Scott Griffith at isb.scooter@gmail.com or 509-710-5371.

Volunteer for Rosie's Place
Please join in and volunteer to cook a casserole for Rosie's Place, a shelter for homeless women in Boston. Ten Hancock congregation members cook a casserole in their home for the second Sunday in each month, and we drive them down to Rosie's Place. If you would like to cook once or twice this year, please email Linda Kilner Olivier at LAKilner@aol.com or contact Meg Weston or Marcia Gens.
Free Program on Caring for Someone with Dementia at Temple Emunah

Balancing Act: When to Step In, When to Let Go, While Caring for Someone with Dementia. Sunday afternoon, November 3, 2:00-3:30pm at Temple Emunah, 9 Piper Rd., Lexington. A growing number of adults are now caring for family members with some level of dementia. As many as 6.8 million people in the United States suffer from the illness. While research has greatly improved our understanding of what dementia is, who gets it, and how it develops and affects the brain, the people who are caring for those with it continue to find themselves with difficult questions and increasing need for support. Please join us as we discuss the complex issues associated with caring for someone with dementia.

Marjorie Sokoll, founder and director of Healing Connections and Beth Soltzberg, coordinator of Living with Chronic Illness, both of Jewish Family & Children's Service, will lead this free program which is open to all faiths in all surrounding communities. Sponsored by the Phyllis Klein Thrope Memorial Fund. To register, email thropeprogram@templeemunah.org or call 781/861-0300.

Building Update in Pictures

Who was parked in our Driveway?
Building Update
In late September, a crew and crane from CHM Welding (Keeping Buildings Together since 1984) prepares for a day of sky-high, heavy lifting. By the end of the afternoon, they had hoisted close to 5 tons of steel beams up and over Hancock and placed them in position to hold up walls near the new elevator.

What's that hovering over Hancock?
Building Update
In late September an enormous crane hoisted 2-ton wall support beams above Hancock. Then, they gently lowered them into the main courtyard.

What are those guys doing?
With impressive precision and a remarkable light touch, the wall support beams were gently lowered onto upright structure bolts. A team of welders from CHM Welding secured them in place.

 SPOTLIGHT

Neighbors in Need Special Mission Offering

Neighbors in Need (NIN) is a special mission offering of the UCC that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry(CAIM). Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries(JWM) to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects through grants.

Neighbors in Need grants are awarded to churches and organizations doing justice work in their communities. These grants fund projects whose work ranges from direct service to community organizing and advocacy to address systemic injustice. Funding is provided through donations to the Neighbors in Need offering.

We will collect the Neighbors in Need offering on October 20th.

New Class Tonight: Learning in the Living Room!
Wednesdays, 7:30- 9pm
The Learning in the Living Room series continues this evening (October 16th) with the session "What Can We Learn From Evangelicals?" led by Dana Allen Walsh. The meeting will start at 7:30 pm and conclude at 9 pm. Our hosts will be Yvette and Bill Kirby at 272 Concord Ave.

WEEK 4: OCT 16

What Can We Learn From Evangelicals?

Discussion led by Dana Allen Walsh

Hosted by Yvette and Bill Kirby at 272 Concord Ave

(entrance on Scott Rd)

In the past 50 years, there has been a cultural shift from mainline Protestant Christianity to a more fundamental, evangelical theology in our country.  What attracts people to the evangelical church?  How is it different from the ways we worship and practice?  What can we learn from our evangelical brothers and sisters?

The remaining sessions planned:

Oct 23 Pam Cochrane "The Intersection of Scripture and Art"
   Nov 6 Paul Shupe and Dana Allen Walsh "Growing Up Catholic;
   Finding a Home at Hancock"

For more full discussion descriptions and locations, please go to our website.

We will have a Hymn Sing every month. There will be time to sing your old favorites and to learn some of the new ones that are out there.

We ask that you please bring your quilts and shawls to morning worship to hang on your pew for everyone to see! Then after morning worship, please take them back home with you.

September/Expectation: Live plants and greens

Looking for a Few Good Women!
Choir
Do you love to sing? Your church needs you! With the reality of travel schedules, illness, school activities, etc. we need to have about a quarter more people in choir than we need on any given Sunday morning. So we are in real need of 3 more sopranos and 3 more altos! No audition is needed, schedule flexibility is a given. All you need is a love for singing and the willingness to share that love with your church family. You do not need to be a church member--maybe invite one of your friends or co-workers to join us as well! Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings at7:30 in the Chapel. Questions? Contact Mark Morgan, Director of Music at 781-862-4220 ext 212 or mark@hancockchurch.org.
Coffee Hour Crunch
Parish Life has been providing coffee hour in Clark Hall for several weeks under very difficult circumstances. Because of the construction, there has been no access to coffee machines, refrigerators, sinks, or storage on the second floor. Coffee has been brought in heavy containers from Peets, and every week has been an adventure in improvisation.

We hope to have improved facilities for them soon, but until then...What can you do to help? First, thank the members of Parish Life for providing us with a gathering space every week. Second, volunteer to help by contacting Carol Puschak (781-863-8635cpuschak@msn.com).
Watch Our Sermons in HD!

YouTube sets the video playback quality to low-resolution by default, but it is possible to select the HD version of the sermon for a much better experience (sound quality is better in HD as well).

You'll notice that the little gear in the lower right hand corner is labeled HD. If you aren't seeing the HD label, just click on the little gear and select the HD version of the video.

On embedded videos the little gear doesn't appear on its own, so click "play" until you see the gear appear, then click "pause." Now you can click the gear icon and select the HD version. But if you really want to see our sermons in their full HD glory, then click the full screen button in the lower right.

Beautiful!

Try it now: Watch Pam Cochrane's sermon "Wrapped in Abundant Love."

Remembrances Word has reached us of the death of Marilyn Briggs.  She and her husband Dick, were long time members of Hancock.  Her memorial service will be held soon in Connecticut.  We extend our thoughts and prayers to Dick and to their family.

A memorial service will be held at Hancock on Saturday, November 9 at 2:00 pm for Bob Foster, the father of Lisa Ettlinger.  We continue our prayers for Lisa, Mark, Nicholas and Tilly, as well as for their extended family. (Please note, this is not the Bob Foster who is the father of Carol Bukys.)

 EDUCATION & SMALL GROUPS

Bagels and Bibles Discuss the Sacraments
Bagels and Bibles Discussion Group
Sundays at 9 am in the Potter Library

The Latin word sacramentum means "a sign of the sacred." The two sacraments are ceremonies that point to what is sacred, significant, and important for Christians. They are special occasions for experiencing God's saving presence. But where do these traditions come from? If you learn more about the sacraments, you can celebrate them more fully. Please join us as we investigate the scriptural basis of the seven sacraments. Feel free to join for the entire eight week series or stop in for one lesson.

Documentary and Community Dialogue on
Stigma and Mental Illness

October 22nd, 7:00-9:00 pm at Clark Middle School in Lexington

Join BasicNeeds US, the Town of Lexington, and mental health advocates for a screening of Hidden Pictures, an award-winning documentary film on the common struggles of people with mental illness around the world. Over 90 international organizations have joined to screen the film, Hidden Pictures, as part of World Mental Health Day. In Lexington, we are honored to have the filmmaker, Delaney Ruston, MD, join us for the screening and panel discussion. Other panelists include: BasicNeeds' President, Dick Dougherty; Emily Lavine of Lexington Human Services; and Lisa Lambert, Executive Director of Parent Professional Advisory League.

The film seeks to raise global awareness about the universal struggles of the millions of people with mental illness worldwide, and to promote dialogue on reducing stigma, a key impediment to recovery.

First Thursday Discussion Group

The First Thursday Discussion Group will continue this fall. Rev. Dana Allen Walsh will be leading the group. The group meets:

   October 3

   November 7

   December 5

at 10 am in the Pearson room.

We will be discussing Lean In:  Women, Work and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg. All are welcome to join the group for a lively conversation of thinking outside of the box. Contact: Lois Smith Martin smithmartin224@verizon.net, (781) 270-0304.

There is a lot of buzz about this new book.

Like or dislike; agree or disagree, come and join the conversation!  Here are some quotes from the book we'll be discussing:

"What would you do if you weren't afraid?"

"Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure that impact lasts in your absence."

"We cannot change what we are not aware of, and once we are aware, we cannot help but change."

It is a book that both men and women can share in a conversation of how to better communicate in the workplace. Even if you are out of the workplace at the present moment, your experiences can add to the discussion. We hope you will join us in discussing this much talked about book.

The first four chapters will be discussed October 3rd.

Interfaith Garden Keeps Growing and Giving
Interfaith Garden
It's hard to believe we are mid-October already!  Not too long before the garden closes on Oct 29th.

I chatted with a few Hancock members on Saturday who came to offer extra help at the garden. There are so many of you who graciously give to ensure this endeavor is a success.  Just look at the latest numbers that Mark Sandeen has been tracking.  He reports:

".....1,541 pounds of produce so far. We are 96 pounds away from last year's record.  We've delivered 181 pounds of tomatoes, 141 pounds of cucumbers, 126 pounds of eggplant, 122 pounds of potatoes, 120 pounds of onions, 102 pounds of lettuce, 95 pounds of both Swiss Chard and cabbage, 77 pounds of both butternut squash and beans, 49 pounds of zucchini, and 24 pounds of asparagus."

Without your help, these numbers wouldn't be possible!
