Neighbors in Need Special Mission Offering

Neighbors in Need (NIN) is a special mission offering of the UCC that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry(CAIM). Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries(JWM) to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects through grants.

Neighbors in Need grants are awarded to churches and organizations doing justice work in their communities. These grants fund projects whose work ranges from direct service to community organizing and advocacy to address systemic injustice. Funding is provided through donations to the Neighbors in Need offering.

We will collect the Neighbors in Need offering on October 20th.

Letter from Dana Allen Walsh

Dear Hancock Friends,

Nate has recently completed his third round of chemotherapy treatment and hopefully, he will only have to endure one more round. While Nate is receiving treatment for testicular cancer, he is not able to work.

This past Saturday, there was a Benefit Concert in honor of Nate in Portland, Maine. Over 400 friends and community members rallied together to show their support and to help raise money for Nate. As part of the fundraising effort, they created a website for donations: http://www.appletonradio.com/shupe/shupe.htm

I wanted to pass along the link to the website if you feel moved to make a financial contribution towards Nate's expenses. If you prefer to send a check, they can be made out to Nate Shupe and sent to:

Rap Night Benefit for Shupe

PO Box 10695

Portland, ME 04104

Thank you for your continued thoughts and prayers for Nate. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to be in touch.

Dana

 ANNOUNCEMENTS & EVENTS

Coffee Hour Crunch
Parish Life has been providing coffee hour in Clark Hall for several weeks under very difficult circumstances. Because of the construction, there has been no access to coffee machines, refrigerators, sinks, or storage on the second floor. Coffee has been brought in heavy containers from Peets, and every week has been an adventure in improvisation.

We hope to have improved facilities for them soon, but until then...What can you do to help? First, thank the members of Parish Life for providing us with a gathering space every week. Second, volunteer to help by contacting Carol Puschak (781-863-8635cpuschak@msn.com).
Please bring in your comforting quilts and prayer shawls for morning worship

We ask that you please bring your quilts and shawls to morning worship to hang on your pew for everyone to see! Then after morning worship, please take them back home with you.

This fall, we are inviting people to add to the richness of our worship experience by sharing things from home with which we will decorate the Sanctuary.

On the second Sunday of each month, we'll be asking people to bring items from home to share, in keeping with the theme of the month:

September/Expectation: Live plants and greens

October/Community: Comforting Quilts and Prayer Shawls

November/Gratitude: Food for the Lexington Food Pantry

December/Advent - Manger Sunday: Gifts for City Mission Society

Take part!  Share generously!

Thanks,

Your Worship Staff

Coffee Office Hours with Paul and Dana will continue through the Fall!

Paul's Via Lago Office Hours:
Monday, October 21, 7-9 a.m.
Location: 1845 Mass Ave in Lexington Center

Dana's Starbucks Office Hours:
Monday, October 21, 1-3 p.m.
Location: 1729 Mass Ave in Lexington Center
Watch Our Sermons in HD!

YouTube sets the video playback quality to low-resolution by default, but it is possible to select the HD version of the sermon for a much better experience (sound quality is better in HD as well).

You'll notice that the little gear in the lower right hand corner is labeled HD. If you aren't seeing the HD label, just click on the little gear and select the HD version of the video.

On embedded videos the little gear doesn't appear until you click play.

So here's the best way I've found to watch videos in HD on our website.

Click the play button, then click the play button again to pause the video as soon as the gear appears.

Then click on the gear and select the HD version.

Then click play and you should be watching your video in HD.

But if you really want to see our sermons in their full HD glory, then click the full screen button in the lower right.

Beautiful!

Try it now: Watch Paul Shupe's sermon "Forgiven and Forgiving" in HD!
Looking for a Few Good Women!
Choir
Do you love to sing? Your church needs you! With the reality of travel schedules, illness, school activities, etc. we need to have about a quarter more people in choir than we need on any given Sunday morning. So we are in real need of 3 more sopranos and 3 more altos! No audition is needed, schedule flexibility is a given. All you need is a love for singing and the willingness to share that love with your church family. You do not need to be a church member--maybe invite one of your friends or co-workers to join us as well! Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings at7:30 in the Chapel. Questions? Contact Mark Morgan, Director of Music at 781-862-4220 ext 212 or mark@hancockchurch.org

Intergenerational Pumpkin Carving Party

If you have any questions, call or email Lisa Mingolla (781) 862-2592 or LNMINGOLLA@yahoo.com. Sponosred by the Christian Education Committee.

Children and Youth Programs Registration
Reminder to Parents: Each family is asked to fill out a registration form for children participating in the Children's and Youth programs at
Hancock. Forms are available online at or at church on the table by the Kathie Stuart Room. Completed forms can be returned to the church office or directly to the Director of Children's Ministries. Registration forms are mandated by our safe church policy and do need to be filled out each new program year.

Remembrances Word has reached us of the death of Marilyn Briggs.  She and her husband Dick, were long time members of Hancock.  Her memorial service will be held soon in Connecticut.  We extend our thoughts and prayers to Dick and to their family.

A memorial service will be held at Hancock on Saturday, November 9 at 2:00 pm for Bob Foster, the father of Lisa Ettlinger.  We continue our prayers for Lisa, Mark, Nicholas and Tilly, as well as for their extended family. (Please note, this is not the Bob Foster who is the father of Carol Bukys.)

You are invited to join us for a celebration of the life of Horace Besecker, which will be held at Hanock this coming Saturday at 2:00 pm, with a collation to follow.  Expecting many seniors will be attending, we encourage those who for whom walking is not a difficulty to park across the street, in the parking lot of the First Parish Church, and leave our parking lot for others.

 EDUCATION & SMALL GROUPS

Bagels and Bibles Discuss the Sacraments
Bagels and Bibles Discussion Group
Sundays at 9 am in the Potter Library

The Latin word sacramentum means "a sign of the sacred." The two sacraments are ceremonies that point to what is sacred, significant, and important for Christians. They are special occasions for experiencing God's saving presence. But where do these traditions come from? If you learn more about the sacraments, you can celebrate them more fully. Please join us as we investigate the scriptural basis of the seven sacraments. Feel free to join for the entire eight week series or stop in for one lesson.

Please follow us on our blog:

Documentary and Community Dialogue on
Stigma and Mental Illness

October 22nd, 7:00-9:00 pm at Clark Middle School in Lexington

Join BasicNeeds US, the Town of Lexington, and mental health advocates for a screening of Hidden Pictures, an award-winning documentary film on the common struggles of people with mental illness around the world. Over 90 international organizations have joined to screen the film, Hidden Pictures, as part of World Mental Health Day. In Lexington, we are honored to have the filmmaker, Delaney Ruston, MD, join us for the screening and panel discussion. Other panelists include: BasicNeeds' President, Dick Dougherty; Emily Lavine of Lexington Human Services; and Lisa Lambert, Executive Director of Parent Professional Advisory League.

The film seeks to raise global awareness about the universal struggles of the millions of people with mental illness worldwide, and to promote dialogue on reducing stigma, a key impediment to recovery.

First Thursday Discussion Group

The First Thursday Discussion Group will continue this fall. Rev. Dana Allen Walsh will be leading the group. The group meets:

   October 3

   November 7

   December 5

at 10 am in the Pearson room.

We will be discussing Lean In:  Women, Work and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg. All are welcome to join the group for a lively conversation of thinking outside of the box. Contact: Lois Smith Martin smithmartin224@verizon.net, (781) 270-0304.

There is a lot of buzz about this new book.

Like or dislike; agree or disagree, come and join the conversation!  Here are some quotes from the book we'll be discussing:

"What would you do if you weren't afraid?"

"Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure that impact lasts in your absence."

"We cannot change what we are not aware of, and once we are aware, we cannot help but change."

It is a book that both men and women can share in a conversation of how to better communicate in the workplace. Even if you are out of the workplace at the present moment, your experiences can add to the discussion. We hope you will join us in discussing this much talked about book.

The first four chapters will be discussed October 3rd.
