Dear Hancock Friends,
With hope and great courage, Nate will begin his chemotherapy treatments on Monday, July 29, at Maine Medical Center in Portland. He will have five consecutive days of treatment, followed by two weeks of respite, and then five more days, followed by two weeks. This pattern will be repeated a minimum of five times, and will continue after that, if necessary, until the cancer is defeated. As many of you know from personal or family experience, and as all can imagine, this is a grueling and difficult treatment. Our prayers for Nate are for courage and stamina, and for the continued embrace of his family and his many friends.
Nate wants to live his life as normally as possible, which we support, of course. All the same we are grateful that MaryAnn will have the freedom to be in Maine as often as needed to provide a safety net for him. I know that you will want me to be there as often as I am needed, and for all of this we are entirely grateful.
But I am also looking forward to returning to Hancock, and to the work that we are called to do together. My first day back will be August 12, and I will preach on the following Sunday.
Many continue to ask how best to help us, and the answer continues to be simply to pray for us, and to be mindful of our son as you lift your concerns to God. If ever, other support is needed, we will not hesitate to ask. But we are blessed with freedom of movement, and access to quality medical care, and so all that we need in addition is love, which we feel from you each and every day.
May God bless you in all that you do these warm summer months.
Peace,
Paul and MaryAnn

Building Progress Report: Sanctuary Doors are open on Sundays!
Please use the Sanctuary Doors for Sunday morning worship!
During the week, we ask that you please use the rear entrance. The lower front entrance is completely blocked off.
A fair amount of demo has already been done in the kitchen, front lobby, and the second floor! All temporary walls will be up by the end of the week. Meanwhile, please stay clear of any construction areas. Thank you!
We will do our best to keep you updated through the Hancock Weekly and on our website: www.hancockchurch.org. Please look out for signs, as building access could change on a daily basis. If you have any concerns about building access during the week, please call the Church Offices at (781) 862-4220.

Hancock Endowment Committee and fossil fuel divestment
At its July meeting the National Synod of the UCC voted to adopt the resolution put forward by Rev. Jim Antal, president of the Massachusetts Conference, to divest its pension funds and investments from fossil fuel companies within 5 years to address climate change concerns. Hancock's Endowment Committee has analyzed its holdings and is already acting on the resolution. At present, Hancock's Endowment portfolio has very small holdings in oil, coal mining, and other fossil fuel companies as components of some funds it owns that are tied to broad market indices. No single fossil fuel company represents more than about 0.5% of the Endowment's total investments. The Endowment portfolio does include one fund focused on the transfer, storage, and processing of mostly natural gas, which represents about 3.6% of our investments. The Endowment Committee plans to shift out of this fund entirely over the next two years. For questions or comments, please contact Jim Fenske, chair of the committee. |

Interfaith Garden needs many hands! Bring a friend! Bring your kids!
The Interfaith Garden is in the height of its productivity. For the past 3 Saturdays 80 to 100+ lbs. of fresh produce have been picked and delivered within the hour to the Lexington food Pantry. Hancock helps maintain this garden along with 12 other faith communities. Come join in the camaraderie of working along with others growing good food for our neighbors. Hancock next sends volunteers on Saturday, August 17 and September 10, from 8 to 9:30am. Bring a friend! Bring your kids! Extra help needed other dates if you are interested. To sign up or for more information contact Laurel Cooley: cooley.laurel1@gmail.com

What did we find in the garden (pictured above)? How to keep the soil sustainable after growing potatoes, and why you need both male and female squash. Find the full report on our website: Interfaith Garden Report.
