Hancock Donates $1,000 Towards Dorchester Community Garden
Last week, three representatives (Connie Gregg, Linda Olivier, and Gwyn Rohrer) from the Christian Service Committee, visited the Russell Elementary School in Dorchester to give a check for $1,000 towards their new Community Garden. Here is Gwyn's reflection on their trip:
"What is so remarkable about this is that the school is beating the odds. They don't have a gym. There are no sinks in the kitchen so they can't cook food on campus. They have to bring in food every day and these meals are lacking leafy greens and vegetables. But even with all of these things stacking against them they have focused on making nutrition and health a priority for the students. They bring in new fruits and vegetables for students to try for snacks instead of chips and junk food. They learn about nutrition and how to stay healthy. They transformed an unsafe empty lot full of trash into an outdoor classroom full of plants, paths, mosaics, and learning opportunities.
Recently the school has created a community garden and everyone is involved. There are kindergarten nutritionists, 5th grade farmers, 3rd grade carpenters who created the raised beds. Teachers, students, families, community members... everyone has their hands in this project. When we learned about the work Russell was doing and have yet to do we knew Hancock had to be involved. And because of our own involvement in the Lexington community garden it seemed only natural to help with Russell's as well.
This school is the essence of hope. They have so little and yet are doing so very much. They handle their obstacles with grace and see each new day as a gift to teach something new."

FROM PAUL AND MARYANN SHUPE

Dear Hancock Members and Friends,
This past week, our eldest son Nate, who lives in Portland, Maine, was diagnosed with testicular cancer. I was able to be with him on Wednesday morning when he had surgery to remove the tumor. The surgery was successful, and the surgeon saw no visual evidence that the cancer had spread. Further testing has been scheduled for this coming week, and we hope to know within ten days or so what further treatment, if any, may be necessary.
Testicular cancer is among the most readily treatable forms of cancer, even if it has spread to other parts of the body, and the success rate for treating it is in excess of 90%. Nothing is guaranteed, of course, but we take heart in these figures.
More, however, we take heart in the promises of God to be with us, and in the support and prayers now being extended to us. We currently have no needs other than your prayers and good thoughts. I have two weeks of vacation beginning tomorrow, and so will be with Nate in Portland through these challenging days. MaryAnn has been with her extended family in Wisconsin, and will join us in Maine on Thursday.
We are thankful to you, to Dana and the rest of the Hancock staff, and for all who love us. If we develop needs other than prayer, we will not hesitate to ask. We remain thankful, hopeful, and strive for courage.
With thanks to you,
Paul and MaryAnn

Work outdoors with the Landscaping Committee!
Do you love the outdoors, gardening, and visiting with fellow church members? If so, the landscaping committee (currently only three people) could use your help for a few hours three or four times a year. We would like to create a "go to" e-mail list of people willing to work with us to weed, edge, and trim. We would send an e-mail when we are working and if you are available, we would love your help. Many hands make light work! If you are interested or have questions contact Linda Williams @ lbwilliams@comcast.net. Thank you! |
Interfaith Garden May 2013 Garden Report Mark rinsing lettuce
The Interfaith Garden Angel watches over the veggies.
Read the latest garden report HERE.
The garden has been cleaned up from the winter, compost has been added and the first of the cool weather crops have been planted. Parsley, lettuce, beets, radishes, spinach and peas were planted to join the crops that wintered over (asparagus, strawberries and garlic). Hancock regularly joins members of 12 other churches and temples working at the garden. The produce will go to the Lexington Food Pantry. All are welcome...bring a friend, neighbor or your kids. There are plenty of times that extra help is needed...not just when Hancock is scheduled. If you are interested in working at the garden, contact Amy Swanson amy.swanson@rcn.com.
