Worship @ the Well 6:15pm
This coming Sunday @ the Well, we will be serving as a neutral pulpit site for pastoral search committee of a nearby UCC congregation. They are considering a candidate to be their minister who lives at a distance. We have been asked to provide an opportunity for the candidate to preach and to lead worship for the search committee. This is a wonderful way for Hancock to extend our hospitality to the wider United Church of Christ. We also get to hear a good and challenging sermon! But to be truly welcoming, we need a good congregation! Please come and worship @ the Well, 6:15 pm, and help us open our arms to sisters and brothers doing the happy and difficult work of finding a new minister for their congregation. Great music by our River Rock Band with jazz singer Patrice Williamson. And mark your calendars for next Sunday, June 9th--the final Well of the season and Dixieland Jazz night with many special musical guests! See you then!

Staff News
Cindy Johnson, our new Administrative Assistant, joins the Hancock Staff team on Monday, June 3. She replaces Jane Park, who has been promoted to Church Administrator. As you will discover, Cindy is a bright and friendly person, who brings a great many skills to our team. She has served in administrative capacities in the non-profit world, and most recently, at the First Baptist Church in Worcester, where she lives. She leaps bravely aboard even though her office is temporarily in the workroom, and the construction dust is about to fly. We are pleased to welcome her and hope you'll stop in and say hello!

Stray Plates and Serving Dishes
Are you missing a plate or serving dish that you brought to a coffee hour, potluck, or other event at church? There are many unlabeled plates and serving dishes in the church kitchen on the wooden countertop to the left of the coffee maker looking to be reunited with their owners. Dishes will remain there for your viewing and taking until 5/26. After that time, any remaining dishes will be given to Goodwill.

Dana is Back!
From the Rev: "This is my first week back after maternity leave. My son, Leighton Allen Walsh was born 3 months ago. He is a happy and healthy baby with the build of a linebacker. He smiles and babbles and loves long walks in his stroller. I'm excited and anxious to be back. I'm anxious because I'm sleep deprived and distracted by thoughts of my little baby. I'm excited because I return to a community that I've dearly missed and a calling I feel to my core. I also know that I will continue to need your grace and flexibility as I navigate this new terrain of motherhood and ministry."

Building Update: Early Payment of Pledges Welcome
Any early payment of pledges already promised would be extremely helpful. As soon as we have settled on a General Contractor we will finalize arrangements with the UCC Cornerstone Fund for a loan to pay construction costs not yet covered by pledges received (a construction loan). The cost of loan interest and title insurance can be reduced if additional pledge payments are received before June 1st. Bids will be coming in from interested contractors next week. Thank you!

Kitchen/TV/CE Wing Appeal
The supplemental campaign appeal to help fund the kitchen renovation, TV system overhaul, and improvements to our sanctuary sound system and CE Wing is making steady progress. Through Tuesday we have received 46 pledges totaling $236,680 towards our $500,000 need. Have we heard from you? We know many are unable to add to their generous pledges last spring, but if you haven't participated in the campaign yet and would like to, or if you're able to add to the pledge you made last spring to help fund these priorities, your pledge will be greatly appreciated. Please fill out and send in the card you received in the mail, or call the church office or pick up a pledge card in church. Follow the details of our progress on the chart in the lobby.

Bagels & Bible
Please check out our blog BagelsAndBibles.wordpress.com for discussions on "Who Wrote the Bible?"
For the past six months, the members of the Bagels and Bibles class have been studying Jesus' parables and the Passion of the Lord using the Scriptures as the primary focus. In almost every session, questions about the origin of the Bible have come up, so this summer we have decided to study the history of the Bible. We will use Richard Elliott Friedman's book "Who Wrote the Bible?" as a guide.
We will spend a total of twelve weeks studying the cultures, literary forms, and authors that influenced the Old and New Testaments. We'll also learn how the ancient scrolls became the book we know today. Stop in for a single lesson or join up for the entire series.
We will extend our classroom discussions on the new blog, BagelsAndBibles.wordpress.com. New topics will be posted on Mondays while we continue to meet for conversation on Sunday mornings at 9am. If you cannot join us in person, please feel free to leave a comment on the blog. We'd love to have you participate in any way!
Join us at 9am on Sunday June 2nd
as we discuss chapter 3 of Richard Friedman's "Who Wrote the Bible?" Copies of the book are available in the library.
If you cannot meet us on Sundays, please join us online at BagelsAndBibles.wordpress.com. Questions? Contact Kerra Fletcher at BagelsAndBibles@outlook.com.
Questions for Chapter 3:
-
What is the difference between the ark and the Tabernacle?
-
Why does God reveal His name to Moses at the burning bush?
-
In the evolution of God in the Old Testament, who is more important, Abraham or Moses? Justify your answer.
-
Which is a more likely explanation of the stylistic similarities of J and E sources: imitation or a common third source? Why combine the to sources?
- Does the sex or gender of the author matter?

Interfaith Garden--Want to Help?
The garden has been cleaned up from the winter, compost has been added and the first of the cool weather crops have been planted. Parsley, lettuce, beets, radishes, spinach and peas were planted to join the crops that wintered over (asparagus, strawberries and garlic). Hancock regularly joins members of 12 other churches and temples working at the garden. The produce will go to the Lexington Food Pantry. All are welcome...bring a friend, neighbor or your kids. There are plenty of times that extra help is needed...not just when Hancock is scheduled. If you are interested in working at the garden, contact Amy Swanson amy.swanson@rcn.com.
